    What is Cognitive Science?
    Cognitive Science is a discipline which studies cognition as a form of information processing. It draws on such fields as cognitive and physiological psychology, philosophy, computer science, linguistics and neuroscience. The problems examined by cognitive scientists include the nature of perception and memory, the neural processes that are involved in complex capacities (for instance reasoning, language, knowledge, intelligence), and the computational techniques that can serve to model these capacities.
    The Study of Cognitive Science
    Cognitive science studies cognition from the point of view of information processing. It is an interdisciplinary field, in that it combines research from the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. An undergraduate major in cognitive science usually involves an introduction to the discipline itself, followed by "core" courses that introduce students to key theoretical issues, as well as by a series of courses in such disciplines as cognitive and physiological psychology, computer science, philosophy and linguistics. Human Cognition in the Human brain.
This site contains texts that I wrote about cognitive psychology, by which I mean the investigation of the way thinking (in its widest definition) is done. I started with a model of the way the human cognition is implemented, and then added texts discussing points that have arisen from various comments I got. If you are not reallin into cognitive psychology, you can try few other bits All the texts in this site in a zip file (0.9Mb) Tar file (2Mb) Compressed tar file (1Mb) The main point that distinguishes my model from other models is that I try to make it plausible neurobiologically. By 'neurobiologically' I mean the characteristics of neurons and their connectivities in the brain. As far as I can see, all the current models of human thinking ignore neurobiology, and more than that, they are neurobiologically implausible. The essential feature that most of these models ignore is the stochastic nature of the low-level connectivity of neurons. The Center for Cognitive Science is the representation on the University at Buffalo campus of an academic and private-sector movement, named "cognitive science", that has been expanding over the last two decades both in the U.S. and abroad. The aim of this development is to investigate the nature of cognition, i.e., of intellective processes as exhibited either by the human mind or by computer. Most centrally, cognitive science is the study of how the mind works, both in its conceptual organization and in its computational and neural infrastructure. Accordingly, cognitive science has brought together researchers from a number of traditionally separate disciplines primarily, computer science psychology linguistics philosophy ... anthropology , and neuroscience in order to build a new and unified understanding of cognition that is compounded from the different disciplinary perspectives and that moves beyond them.

One of my research interests is in simulating evolution of body and brain/mind modularity in complex organisms by means of artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms ( Calabretta et al. ). (Neural networks are computational models of the brain which controls organisms' behavior; genetic algorithms are computational models of Darwinian evolution.). In 1997 I spent one sabbatical year as post-doctoral fellow at Yale University Department of Biology and in 2000 and 2002 came back to Yale as visiting fellow at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and of Psychology. I collaborate with Gunter Wagner (f ounding chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) and Frank Keil (Faculty of Psychology, editor of The MIT Encyclopedia of Cognitive Sciences MIT Press, 1999 "The existence of modules is recognized at all levels of the biological hierarchy. In order to understand what modules are, why and how they emerge and how they change, it would be necessary to start a joint effort by researchers in different disciplines (evolutionary and developmental biology, comparative anatomy, physiology, neuro- and cognitive science). This is made difficult by disciplinary specialization. [...] we claim that, because of the strong similarities in the intellectual agenda of artificial life and evolutionary biology and of their common grounding in Darwinian evolutionary theory, a close interaction between the two fields could easily take place. Moreover, by considering that artificial neural networks draw an inspiration from neuro- and cognitive science, an artificial life approach to the problem could theoretically enlarge the field of investigation."
