It was the most notorious scientific experiment in recent memory - in 1989, the two men who claimed to have discovered the energy of the future were condemned as imposters and exiled by their peers. Can it possibly make sense to reopen the cold fusion investigation? A surprising number of researchers already have.
    By Charles Platt
PLUS Cold Fusionaries Almost four stories high, framed in steel beams and tangled in pipes, conduits, cables, and coils, the Joint European Torus (JET) claims to be the largest fusion power experiment in the world. Located near Oxford, England, JET is a monument to big science, its donut-shaped containment vessel dwarfing maintenance workers who enter it in protective suits. Here in this gleaming nuclear cauldron, deuterium gas is energized with 7 million amperes and heated to 300 million degrees Celsius - more than 10 times hotter than the center of the sun. Under these extreme conditions atomic nuclei collide and fuse, liberating energy that could provide virtually limitless power. Maybe.

PHYSICS AND MATERIAL SCIENCE PAGE

  • Cold fusion is the generation of anomalous excess heat at low temperatures. It began with experiments using an immersed palladium electrode activated in heavy water. In March, 1989, when the achievement of cold fusion was first reported in the press, electrochemically induced reactions were very difficult to reproduce. Despite the ensuing controversy, much work has persisted. More understanding has developed regarding what the products are (including helium ), and how the reactions work at increasing power levels. More importantly, the technology has blossomed to include anomalous heat of both steady-state and burst type in several types of materials.
From the JET Thermal Products Website: Dr. Mitchell Swartz: "Cold fusion is the fusion of two heavy hydrogen nuclei to form a helium nucleus at near room temperature. Cold fusion happens when we take heavy hydrogen and we load it into a metal such as palladium, much as water is loaded into a sponge. When the hydrogen loading reaches a certain sufficient threshold level, then all of the sites in the metal lattice that are available become filled. If we keep pushing harder, then the lattice continues to fill, and if we continue to push in a sufficient amount, then eventually, if the conditions are correct and if we actually have prepared the metal a little bit, then we know that there are certain sites in the loaded metal where these desired reactions occur. Cold fusion then does occur. Under the appropriate conditions, some of these pieces of palladium appear to generate reactions that involve heat directly from the generation of new (

What is ColdFusion?
by Michael Smith, Contributing Editor ColdFusion is the hot way to create dynamic webpages that link to just about any database. Creating an application with ColdFusion is as straightforward as creating a static Web site. However, in a ColdFusion application you can introduce an incredible range of functionality that is not available either in static Web sites or in traditional client/server applications. A ColdFusion application is very simply a collection of pages, similar to a static Web site. But unlike the pages in a static Web site, the pages in a ColdFusion application include the server-side ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) in addition to HTML. CFML gives you the ability to control the behavior of your applications, integrate a wide range of server technologies, and dynamically generate the content that is returned to the Web browser. When a page in a ColdFusion application is requested by a browser, it is automatically pre-processed by the ColdFusion Application Server. Based on the CFML in the page, the Application Server executes the application logic, interacts with other server technologies, and then dynamically generates an HTML page which is returned to the browser.

Railo Membase Cache Extension available for beta testing.
Posted by Andrea Campolonghi in membase railo on October 9, 2010 NorthScale Membase Server is an elastic key-value database that stores web application data far more efficiently and cost effectively than it can be stored in a relational database. With NorthScale Membase Server, organizations can deploy a highly available, cloud-friendly data layer that expands dynamically as application needs change, delivering performance exceeding that of any other NoSQL solution. API compatible with memcached, the de facto standard web caching software, Membase is easy to use and supported by virtually every programming language and application framework. Membase gives you an easy way to access and use memcached as a key-value database. Membase is a very powerfull solution if you need a reliable, fast and distribuited cache engine. The Extension allows you to use Membase as a key/value cache for your Objects (components), Templates, Queries and Resources (such as files etc).

My Adobe MAX 2010 Experience
If you’ve read anyone’s MAX roundups yet, you know this year’s MAX was amazing (even for those of us that didn’t get any of the sweet freebies). I’ve been to three MAX conferences in my lifetime (including Chicago and San Francisco) and this was my favorite by far. Of course, this experience was completely different as this time I came as an Adobe employee which meant that besides acting as a TA for several courses, I spent most of my time talking with community members rather than attending sessions. I just wanted to wrap things up now that I have had time to digest all the information and share why I loved Adobe MAX 2010. [More] Comments (0) del.icio.us Linking Blogs Oct 28, 2010
Local Caching of Remote Images in AIR for Android
I was working on an application (some of which will be featured in the upcoming Adobe Edge) that used several images delivered by an API remotely over the web. When working with mobile applications where data is often being delivered by wireless 3G connections of varying signal strengths/speeds, downloading even small(ish) images can be costly and slow. The other thing that you may notice is that if an image component in your Flex "Hero" mobile application is bound to a remote URL, it will reload every time the view is reactivated - meaning you can incur that cost repeatedly. In my case I used your Xbox Live profile tile on the header of most of my applications pages so the delay was blatantly obvious as I pushed and popped views.

October 21, 2010 Apple Deprecates Java
From the Apple Java OS X 10.6 Java Kit update Release Notes published last night: "As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated. This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X. The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products." The Release Notes: ttp://bit.ly/dfrQH7 I realize that Windows doesn't ship with Java, for example, so it wouldn't be much of a problem, had not Apple disallowed 3rd party Java VM's to exist on OS X. But due to reasons only Apple understands completely, they have not permitted non-Apple originating Java VM's from being installed on OS X to date. [EDIT: Re-reading the Release Notes, it appears that with last night's Java Kit update, Apple is now officially allowing 3rd party JVM's to be installed...but of course, there aren't any. At least, not that I'm aware of. Which is because Apple disallowed them until now.] The announced Apple OS X App Store will disallow any apps that use Java as well, apparently.
