ColdFusion Weekly
The "Virtually Live" Call-In Show
Sat, 14 June 2008 Yes, the time has come for ColdFusion Weekly to bid everyone a fond farewell. We've had a fantastic time working on the podcast for the past two years but we simply can't give it the attention it deserves, so rather than keep everyone in limbo we have decided to officially stop. Not to worry, the web site will stay up so you can always grab old episodes. In regards to timeline, we made this decision a couple months ago. Long before any of the growing pains occurred in the CFML community. In all fairness, please do not read our in the podcast arena as an indication that we're leaving the CFML community as that is far from the truth. Matt is going to be spending more time in the Java world, doing more mobile device development, working on Mach-II documentation (and code for a change!), perfecting the Mach-II training, and contributing to the Open BlueDragon project. Peter is going to be working on the next version(s) of Mach-II (and prodding Matt on the documentation), refining the Mach-II workshops and contributing to other (currently unknown) open-source projects. He is also becoming more involved in the world of food cooperatives and the impact they make on his local community. Brian Meloche will be starting up a new podcast called CFConversations very soon, so there will not be much downtime in the CF podcast space. We encourage you all to subscribe to his feed when it's up and running! And who knows, maybe you'll even hear your old podcast friends Matt and Peter on there from time to time.

Application.cfc Reference in CFScript for Coldfusion 9
One of Coldfusion 9's features is the ability to define components entirely within CFScript. I was looking around for an example of Application.cfc in CFScript, and I couldn't find it. So I've compiled it for you here. It includes all available methods and application variables. (If you find something I've missed, let me know!)
Notes:
- The ordering of variables and methods matches Adobe's documentation.
- Descriptions are from Adobe.
- Variables are set to CF defaults.
- onRequest, onError, and onMisingTemplate are commented out because they can mess with your application if you don't implement them properly.
- You do not need to enclose this within cfscript tags.
Application.cfc:
/** @title "Application.cfc reference in CFScript for Coldfusion 9" @description "This component includes all Application.cfc methods and variables, set to their default values (if applicable). Please note that default values are not always desirable, and some methods or variables should be modified or removed depending on the situation." @author "Russ S. (http://cfruss.blogspot.com)" @dateCreated "November 29, 2009" @licence "This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 United States License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/ or send a letter to Creative Commons, 171 Second Street, Suite 300, San Francisco, California, 94105, USA." @hint "You implement methods in Application.cfc to handle ColdFusion application events and set variables in the CFC to configure application characteristics." */

A New Phase of My Life
Posted At : October 28, 2010 10:27 AM
Related Categories: Web Dev Personal Consulting I am excited, and a bit nervous, to announce that I am officially setting off on my own as an independent developer/consultant for hire. This is a very big move for me, and I am enormously excited for what tomorrow will bring. One might ask why I am making this change; especially given the turbulent economy. Lets just say it really felt like the right time to do something new. I yearn to explore beyond my previous role, and start up new projects/businesses where I find opportunity. It is very easy to think 'maybe next year' and settle into what feels comfortable, pushing off ambition and change forever. I find that real learning and growth often comes from change and the confronting the uncomfortable. Having a supportive and understanding wife helps a lot as well. I am also profoundly sad to be leaving my friends and colleagues. I have worked at Harbour Light and then at Savvy Software (they are sister companies) for about 14 years. This encompasses the entirety of my professional life thus far. Virtually everything in my life has changed in that time except my job, and the people I work with. I owe everyone a huge helping of thanks for the great times, personal growth, opportunities, learning, and friendship. They have been with me through many important phases of my life, and it is more than a little emotional for me to write this right now. Lets just leave it at that.

Posted in August 2nd, 2010 by admin in Flex Here is a link to if you missed it. Application Source Step 2: Implementing Bezier Curve over the Application Background Skin
Now that you have your application background working, we can work on adding a layer on top of this. We will be adding a shape with a Cubic Bezier curve for a bottom border on top of the background creating a banner. To ensure that our Bezier curve is visible, we need to place it on top of the background (beneath the Rectangle in our code). s:Path is used to be given data to create a shape. Inside of the data property is where we define our shape. First off we have to set the data cursor to start at the X and Y values of 0,0 which would be the top left of the application. Now we make a line from 0,0 to 600,0 by using “l 600,0”. “l” stands for line. It is important to remember that these coordinates are based off of 0,0 being the last coordinates you left off on, not 0,0 being the top left of the application. Next, we need to create the rightmost border of our shape using 0,100. Again, think of this as saying, move horizontally from this location pixels, move vertically from this location 100 pixels.

I have seen so much enthusiasm at this year's CFUnited I am sure it will be back in some format with someone other than me owning it in the future. If you have suggestions for CFUnited Reloaded let me know commenting to this post, by emailing me or by phone. Perhaps the location needs to change, or the format or something else. Or perhaps you have a suggestion of who might buy and run the event in the future. What ever your ideas I am interested in hearing them Thanks! Michael

Thanks so much CFUnited 2010
  • By Cara Beverage
CFUnited 2010, what can I say? My experience was awesome! My heart is filled with smiles, good times, great people, and wonderful memories. It was a bumpy road to get there but it was a labor of love. I am not a developer but "I heart CF" and I am in love with the CF community! This is an amazingly intelligent, generous, hard-working, hellafun, and genuinely NICE group of people. CFUnited leaves me this year gushing with gratitude. I will list a few of my appreciations to some key folks and if I stupidly leave anything out, please know I am still recovering from this whole thing. Attendees: First of all your bona fide reputation proceeds you. Lansdowne staff has communicated that they think you are one of the nicest groups the have worked with and that they have truly enjoyed working with you in just about every way. I agree with them 10 fold. Every person I interacted with felt like an old dear friend, even if it was the first time we met. Every person who came by the registration desk and smiled, said "Hey, " and gave feedback was, to me, the beating heart of this event. We did this for you and you paid us back what we lacked in financial compensation in pleasantries, understanding, appreciation, and kind words. I deeply hope that you got your monies worth and then some from this year's event because our highest hope was to please you.
