    I. CRYONICS: PURPOSE AND DEFINITION
As defined in WEBSTER'S NEW UNIVERSAL UNABRIDGED DICTIONARY, cryonics is "the practice of freezing the body of a person who has just died in order to preserve it for possible resuscitation in the future, as when a cure for the disease that caused death has been found." If future molecular-repair technology can repair damage caused by cryopreservation (including freezing-damage), cure all diseases and stop (and reverse biological aging then cryonics is the "first aid" which can preserve contemporary humans for future science. A few people look forward to the time when their minds can be uploaded to a computer. In either case, cryonics may be the gateway to a future world of eternal youth and prosperity. Cryonics is to be distinguished from cryogenics , the physics of low temperature, and cryobiology , the science of low-temperature effects on biological systems. Use of the word "cryogenics" to mean "cryonics" is a quick tip-off that the speaker or writer is ignorant of the subject of cryonics.

    What is cryonics?
Cryonics: Using low temperatures to care for the critically ill
By Aschwin de Wolf Introduction In contemporary medicine terminally ill patients can be declared legally dead using two different criteria: whole brain death or cardiorespiratory arrest. Although many people would agree that a human being without any functional brain activity, or even without higher brain function, has ceased to exist as a person , not many people realize that most patients who are currently declared legally dead by cardiorespiratory criteria have not yet died as a person. Or to use conventional biomedical language, although the organism has ceased to exist as a functional, integrated whole, the neuroanatomy of the person is still intact when a patient is declared legally dead using cardiorespiratory criteria. Metabolic Arrest One step further than general anesthesia is hypothermic circulatory arrest. Some medical procedures, such as complicated neurosurgical interventions, require not only cessation of consciousness but also complete cessation of blood flow to the brain. In these cases the temperature of the patient is lowered to such a degree (≈16 degrees Celsius) that the brain can tolerate a period without any circulation at all. Considering the fact that parts of the human brain can become irreversibly injured after no more than five minutes without oxygen, the ability of the brain to survive for at least an hour at these temperatures without any oxygen is quite remarkable.

    49. TRANS TIME Cryonics Intro -- A Simple Proposition
Trans Time s Introduction to cryonics. 3 printed pages.
    http://www.transtime.com/cryintro/cryintro.htm
A Simple Proposition A s mankind prepares to launch itself into a new millenium, the only thing that seems certain about our future is that there will be change. For many years now, our society and culture have been undergoing unprecedented transformation, thanks in part to the effects of improving technology. For some, the accelerating pace of change seems disconcerting, maybe even frightening. Such people see more upheaval and chaos than renaissance and revolution. But for many of us, there is an altogether different feeling, a feeling that there has never been a more exciting time to be alive. In the field of medicine in particular, there is cause for great optimism. We have never had greater power for restoring, maintaining and extending health, and yet the big payoff is clearly still ahead of us. Each year that passes marks a new record for medical research funding, and the impetus to greatly increase that funding is gaining strength daily. Many scientists now believe that, given enough time and money, most or all of today's major illnesses and causes of death might one day be cured through increasingly precise, molecular-based technology. Perhaps more startlingly, it even seems possible that the aging process itself (which is beginning to look less mysterious and more like other diseases) might also be cured through medical means, maybe even during the 21st century. In time, human beings might live such long, healthy lives that they begin to view the current average lifespan of nearly 80 years much as we view the less than 25 year lifespan of prehistoric humans (i.e.

    Cryonics
By Heather Murphy Illustration By Tim Gough If you pay about the price of a three series BMW—$35,000—the Cryonics Institute (C.I.) will cool you down as soon as your heart stops beating, replace your blood with special chemicals and store you in a thermos full of -196°C liquid nitrogen until technology has advanced to a point where doctors can bring you back to life. This May, C.I. took her in. Now she spends her days suspended in a vat full of liquid nitrogen not too far from 79 other patients—some entire bodies, others simply heads—in the organization’s facility in Clinton Township, Michigan. A couple thousand miles away at Alcor in Scottsdale, Arizona, 76 more patients, including baseball hero Ted Williams and excluding Walt Disney (that was just a myth), coolly resist the concreteness of death. If any of these people ever make it into the future, they will have physicist Robert C. Ettinger to thank. In 1962, Ettinger published a book called The Prospect of Immortality outlining the idea of cryonics. The book became a bestseller and immortalist organizations formed soon after. In 1976, in an attempt to turn theory into practice, Ettinger founded the Cryonics Institute. That same year his mother became the first C.I. patient to be cryopreserved. In 1986, his first wife joined her in the deep freeze, as did his second in 2000.

    52. Cryonics And Cryogenics
cryonics and Cryogenics freezing - science of that which is cold - bringing frozen people back to life in the distant future
    http://www.zyra.org.uk/cryo.htm
Zyra's front page SCIENCE Contact site index Cryonics Suspended Animation Cryonics is freezing people so they may be brought back to life in the future. The future is hoped to be an amazing utopian futuristic existence where the sorts of things people died of these days (2004) can easily be cured. And, of course, the technology is assumed to be good enough to bring back to life people who have been frozen solid in liquid nitrogen for centuries! The idea is in principle not new, and has some similarities in principle to the Ancient Egyptian idea of storing a body by mummification in the hopes that the person will go on to an afterlife. Sceptics say it's all a bit silly on the basis that it's impossible to restore someone who is dead. It had better be mentioned here that although CRYONICS is optimistic immortalism, CRYOGENICS is a serious science to do with anything very cold, and there are some scientists in the serious business of supercool superconducting magnets who, if you ask them about deep-frozen dead people will look at you in the same sort of way as Patrick Moore would if you asked him to tell you your fortune by "the stars"! My personal opinion (this review is by Zyra , by the way), is that cryonics IS possible, and that if you freeze a dead person properly and keep the body long enough then you will be able to have them brought back to life, although it may be in the DISTANT future! The basis for this belief is:

    http://library.thinkquest.org/J0112600/cryonics.htm
Cryonics Freezing the Dead History David Ettinger has been doing lots of research in cryonics. His father, Robert, founded the Cryonics Institute and began researching the possibility of extending life when he had a brush with death as a soldier in World War II. He opened the Cryonics Institute in 1976 and the institute froze its first person in 1977. Now 1. The person should be cooled as soon as possible after death. Heparin, an anti-coagulant that keeps the blood from clotting, should be administered if possible. The body is packed in ice and sent to the Cryonics Institute. 2. At the institute, a process called wash out and perfusion is performed. The body remains packed in ice throughout the procedure, which takes a few hours. 3. The body is placed in a sleeping bag, and put in an insulated box made of wood on the outside and fiberglass on the inside for one week. Dry ice is placed on a fabric platform above the box, and the cold vapors descend upon and cool the body. The amount of dry ice is increased each day until the body reaches minus-40 degrees Fahrenheit. 4. The body is then moved to an insulated container that has liquid nitrogen at the bottom. Every day for a week, the body is slowly lowered into the liquid nitrogen until it is completely submerged. When the process is complete, the body temperature is minus-196 degrees Celsius, or minus-320 degrees Fahrenheit.

    A Defense of Cryonics
by Eric Krastel This essay was written by Eric Krastel, a cryonics advocate and member of the cryonics organization called Alcor. Eric is the person who first introduced me to the ideas and principles behind cryonics. This page originally appeared in his online journal , where you can read and reply to comments about the article. I'm fairly open about my enthusiasm for cryonic suspension as a reasonable alternative to certain death. While I don't go around evangelizing to strangers on the street corner, I also don't shy away from discussion and debate on the subject. As a result, I've heard a lot of the same objections raised time and again from different people. The vast majority are clearly based upon either misinformation or a lack of information about what cryonics is and how it works. With that in mind, I'd like to present a list of the most common objections and concerns that I've heard as well as my responses. These are not straw men- I've heard or read all of these points brought up at some point or another. 1) There are several cryonics organizations out there, but most of the specifics I give here pertain to the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. They're the largest cryonics organization in the world, and the one with whom I'm signed up.
