Fighting for the Right to Be Frozen Posted on 2006-08-30 07:43:35 in Cryonics Nanotechnology With his 68th birthday approaching, Charles Grodzicki slapped down $28,000 USD for a plot to call home after his death. Like many people his age, the West Vancouverite is working on his will and has briefed his loved ones so they know exactly what he wants done with his remains. But he's having trouble finding a local funeral director to sell him a pre-arranged package, thanks to a little-known B.C. law enacted in 1990. "I've talked to so many people," says Grodzicki over juice at The Bread Garden. "Two Vancouver funeral directors, the head of the Western School of Funeral Services and the B.C. Cryonics is the third choice, if you don't like the idea of being buried or burnt why not look into cryonics. A lot of people don't sign up because they think it wont work, but so what if it doesn't, its like playing the lotto in a way, if you don't buy a ticket you have got no chance of winning. Others that are interested think its too expensive as did I, but Cryonics can be paid for by a life insurance policy, you don't have to be rich. Other people just don't like talking about death especially their own Well sorry but at the moment that is going to happen to everybody and you will have to face up to it some time, so why not now. Last minute suspension cases are full of problems. Since I have signed up I am less concerned about my own death If it doesn't work you wont know about it. Some people think it is selfish, strange idea this, do they mean not leaving all my money to the kids to fight over. They should be independent enough to stand on their own two feet, I will probably leave them a bit anyway. Maybe they think I am selfish for wanting to live for ever or the money could be put to better use. How many of these people have brought a car for themselves, brought the latest gadget for themselves, in fact brought anything that is for themselves., very selfish. Deciding to have one more child, if you have one child and decide to have another you have just halved the inheritance and the attention the first would get, that a bit mean isn't it.

Aging can be slowed down by reducing the body's temperature. Aging can almost be stopped at -321 degrees. In fact, at that temperature it would take about 30 trillion years to age 1 second. This is suspended animation accomplished by keeping the body submerged in liquid nitrogen. Here's the deal: Prior to death you contact a cryogenics establishment such as the Cryonics Institute (24355 Sorrentino Court; Clinton Township, MI 48035; Phone 1-586-791-5961 Fax 1-586-792-7062. They will be able to make the arrangements for your body to be cryonically suspended. From the Cryonics Institute : "Cryonics isn't fiction. It's based on science an emerging science, the logical conclusion to a growing accumulation of hard scientific facts. "Such as?
    • The fact that several types of living creatures have been already frozen to liquid nitrogen temperature and below, where they exhibited no signs of life and experienced no signs of decay and were then restored to functioning normal life.
    • The fact that human tissues, including brain tissue and sperm and even human embryos, have also been cooled on literally thousands of occasions to a seemingly non-living state, and have been again restored to life.

Here is a link to the CI comparison page entitled: Comparing Procedures and Policies CI President Ben Best is the author of this text and produced the accompanying charts. The topic title below refers directly to the topic titles used on the CI comparison page, and we have added subtopics for clarity. American Cryonics Society patients in long-term liquid nitrogen cold care at the CI facility have dual membership which means they have all the positive features that come from both CI membership and American Cryonics Society membership. Additional safety measures only for American Cryonics Society members in long-term cryogenic cold care at the CI facility include: A) yearly CI facility inspection and published inspection reports by ACS; B) patient funds managed apart from those under the control of CI.

Vol. 3 - PDF version ABSTRACT A consumer survey designed to measure familiarity with and attitudes toward the idea of cryonics was conducted over the internet. A total of 517 responses were examined in an effort to clarify the relationships between (1 the reported level of familiarity vs. the accuracy of responses, and (2) demographic variables vs. attitudes and dispositions toward cryonics. Results indicate that (1) those claiming superior familiarity do not have superior knowledge, (2) a number of those surveyed have significant misconceptions regarding cryonics, and (3) important attitudinal differences exist between demographically diverse groups INTRODUCTION Cryonics has been defined as "the technology for freezing a person after a terminal illness or a fatal accident, in the hope that medical science will be able to revive that person in the future, when life extension and anti-aging have become a reality". Cryonic suspension is an emergency medical procedure designed to save lives (much like Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), a last-ditch effort to forestall irreversible brain damage. Since the first individual was cryonically preserved in 1967, a handful of firms have sprung up offering cryopreservation and/or storage services to the general public.

To see the other covers for this book click here THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY The following is from the dust jacket of the British hard cover edition, 1965. Would you like to live for ever, here on this earth? In the very near future this may become a real possibility. Indeed, in theory it is possible now, for if one was to be deep-frozen and stored away it is inevitable that in fifty, or a hundred, or a thousand years (time becomes meaningless in this context) surgery will have progressed to the point where damage to the cells which is at present irreparable will be able to be repaired. The difficulty at the moment is that present methods of freezing and unfreezing are so crude that a great deal more damage is done in the process. But this again is something which will soon be overcome. Should it happen, and there is the possibility that the first cases are already on ice, there will clearly be innumerable complications over the religious, social, and legal status of 'corpses', not to mention the purely physical problem of storage, and the enormous economic problem of over-population which must one day result. Can a 'corpse' inherit? Can an 'ice-widow' remarry? Is it euthanasia to freeze a relation, or is it murder not to?

    Abstract
The death at issue in the brain death debate is not an empiric reality, but a social category, "social death." It is a question of which bodies we are comfortable using and disposing of in certain ways, and not comfortable giving medicine or food as if they were "alive." Until recently both mind and body stopped functioning at the same time, and this "death" and "social death" were generally seen as one phenomenon. There were important exceptions, however, in many cultures where particular diseases and disabilities earned a social death definition before the physical death had occurred.
    Introduction
For everyday purposes we know and can say whether an animal is alive or not. But upon closer inquiry, we find that this is, in many cases, a very complex question, as the jurists know very well. They have cudgeled their brains in vain to discover a rational limit beyond which the killing of the child in its mother's womb is murder. It is just as impossible to determine absolutely the moment of death, for physiology proves that death is an not instantaneous, momentary phenomenon, but a very protracted process. (Engels,1880
