Have we found all the large animals still living in the world? Probably not, since in the last decade some previously unknown species have surfaced in Southeast Asia, for example. This page is dedicated to such animals commonly called "cryptids" which might possibly exist in nature but whose existence has not yet been accepted by modern science. If you are interested in animals which have never existed in nature (although they may, in part, have been based upon real animals) such as gryphons and mermaids, please see my legendary animals page. Cryptozoological topics have generated a vast number of books, magazines, and articles. My page of books about cryptozoology lists some I've found interesting. Encounters with hairy hominids or "wild men" like the Yeti Sasquatch , and Nguoi Rung go back to antiquity and appear in legends throughout the world. One of the earliest literary compositions in the world, the Epic of Gilgamesh, contains a hairy wildman named Enkidu. North America's representative is usually called the Sasquatch, one of its Native American names, or Bigfoot. The best-known photographic evidence is the famous Roger Patterson film of a purported Sasquatch, taken in 1967. (Stories that Patterson's film was a hoax continue to circulate.) One hypothesis is that some reports represent encounters with surviving representatives of supposedly extinct hominoid or hominid species. A popular choice for Bigfoot is

Taking a Hard Look at Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is the study of still unknown species of animals. These cryptids, as they are called, include not only the Loch Ness monster, sasquatch and other "mega-monsters", but also many lesser known mystery creatures. (Some of these have more evidence going for them than the monster super-stars.) Cryptozoology often receives a bad rep because it is often practiced with little skepticism, or regard for scientifically supported facts and theories. Likewise, paranormal cryptozoologists do little to help the integrity of cryptozoology. It can, however, be a level-headed, interesting and possibly even scientific subject, if examined with open-minded skepticism and a scientific viewpoint. Such an approach is the basis of this web site on cryptozoology. Ockham's razor, which basically states that the simplest explanation is probably the correct one, is a rationale that looms large here. This web site is undergoing a major revampplease disregard any juvenile grammar and credulity (I started this web site when I was rather young)!

by Greg Mayer The spotted lion is a favorite topic within cryptozoology. Bernard Heuvelmans defined cryptozoology as The scientific study of hidden animals, i.e., of still unknown animal forms about which only testimonial and circumstantial evidence is available, or material evidence considered insufficient by some! Although, not mentioned in the brief definition, Heuvelmans also included the study of known, but supposedly extinct, animals, that might still be extant, based on testimonial or circumstantial evidence. Animals that are of interest to cyptozoologists are known as cryptids. The roster of cryptids includes such beasties as the Loch Ness monster, the abominable snowman, and bigfoot. This might suggest to some that cryptozoology is pretty out there, a pseudoscience. But, in fact, the question of what cryptozoology is turns out to be more interesting, as the spotted lion story itself indicates. giant muntjac sao la megamouth shark , and Chacoan peccary the standard of evidence in systematic zoology. In cryptozoology, there is a wide range of practice in what kind of evidence is considered compelling. Heuvelmans himself leaned pretty strongly toward accepting testimony as fairly compelling (while strongly rejecting, however, attempts to make cryptozoology a form of mysticism or paranormal exploration, as was done in, for example

We have the information you need when it comes to the creatures of Cryptozoology. Ephesians 6:12 - For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. There have been thousands, maybe millions of sightings, since recorded history. How can there be so many sightings of the same creatures by people from every race and walk of life. The only answer can be, the creatures are real. If such creatures are real, then why have we never found a dead Bigfoot, a bone, or proof of any other creatures ? Our Thoughts: Maybe the creatures listed on our site are all the same beings, Spiritual Creatures. Spiritual creatures can change shape at will, and take on any form, from that of a creature from a nightmare to that of a beautiful woman. They can become transparent, invisible, or solid as a rock. They can look like a triangle shaped UFO then change or morph into another shape. They can levitate, walk, run, fly, or dissapear and travel to another planet in a thought. Spiritual creatures have great non-human strength. They can give off odors, both foul or as pleasant as a fresh rose. They can communicate by expressed words, thoughts (telepathy), they can speak any foreign or lost language. They know the past and maybe even some future events.

Rev. Ivan Stang People in modern society have less contact with wild animals than did our ancestors, and the vast bestiary of imaginary animals that were assumed part of the natural world in years past has dwindled down to a handful of remotely credible Bigfoots (and other Hairy Hominids ), The Loch Ness Monster, the forest apemen of Vietnam Rennets , Goatman, Hodag khting vor Chupacabra , and such also-rans as Ogopogo , the Hot-Headed Naked Ice Borer , the Devil-Jack Diamond fish , the Archaeoraptor winged cats the Jersey Devil , the South American dog-eating eagle , and dead people who somehow avoid living in the past tense. These are the pathetic remains of an imaginary ecosystem that was once home to dragons , bunyip, mermaids, centaurs , gowrow, unicorns enormous sea-serpents , sphinxes, phoenices, gargoyles, hoopsnakes, werewolves and fairies et cetera Alas, imaginary creatures are going extict almost as quickly as real ones. An ever popular alternative to fantastic animal monsters has been to define a certain class of people as being really some sort of frightening supernatural beast, as in the caricature of Jews as horned demon-men, or that of Africans as sub-human monkey-people.

The Study of Unknown Creatures and Hidden Animals
Many people mistakenly confuse cryptozoology with the study of mythological creatures. In fact it is a completely different science, being a variant of the more traditional zoology. The word cryptozoology literally means "the study of hidden animals". Cryptozoology has no interest in unreal creatures. Instead it is the study of living creatures that might exist now or have existed once but are not yet known formally. These potential creatures are known as cryptids Cryptozoologists are not interested in fantasy stories except when they contain clues as to the possible nature of a real creature. For a creature to be classed as a cryptid there must be at least some evidence for its existence. This evidence will often be anecdotal, for example folklore and individual sightings. The stronger the evidence, the more likely the cryptid is to exist and the more interesting it is to a cryptozoology researcher.

Cryptozoology is the study of animals and other creatures that have not yet been accepted by science as real. In other words, it is monster-hunting. Cryptozoologists look for creatures like sea serpents and the yeti , hoping to gather enough evidence to prove that these beings exist. They also look for more commonplace animals, such as the ivory-billed woodpecker , the giant vampire bat , the inflatable hedgehog and the pygmy elephant . Creatures that are under investigation by cryptozoologists are called cryptids. Although cryptozoology doesn't get much respect from other scientific disiplines, it has had some spectacular success stories, including the pongo (now known as the gorilla), the okapi (an animal that looks like a cross between a giraffe and zebra), and the coelacanth (a prehistoric fish thought to be extinct).
Cryptozoologists are a specialized branch of monster hunters. Since their ultimate goal is to discover either new species of animal or new subspecies, the science of cryptozoology is rooted in biology. The more a creature shows evidence of being supernatural, the less likely it is that cryptozoologists would be interested in it. Not many cryptozoologists investigate the strangest things like ghostly demon cats, Mothman or werewolves . Ghost hunts are left to the paranormal investigators and a few fringe cryptozoologists. On the other hand, there are very few animals, however mythical they may be, that have never stirred the interest of a cryptozoologist. This is because perfectly real animals have often been obscured by so much folklore that they seemed ridiculous.
