cryptozoology is the scientific study of hidden animals like Bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, and Mokelembembe.

Cryptozoological Realms A Tibetan proverb asks, "What is the most cunning of all animals?" What do you think the answer is? Hmmm, let me think a second. Hmmmm.... Ah, the fox is the most cunning of all animals. No, I'm afraid not. If its not the fox, then what animal is the most cunning? Actually we're not just talking about one animal but many animals.
The answer from that Tibetan proverb is "That which no man has seen" and cryptozoology is the study of those animals. Hmmm, animals that man hasn't seen, interesting. What the heck is crypto... cryptozoology? Cryptozoology is the scientific study of hidden animals. Huh! Hidden Animals? What are you talking about? Cryptozoology ~ Cryptids, Monsters and Strange Creatures
Cryptozoology is the study of animals, or creatures, that have been reported to exist without any actual proof. This field of study also includes the search for animals that are thought to be extinct. These strange creatures, like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Sea Monsters, el Chupacabra, and others are often referred to as cryptids. Read True Terror is When Your Imagination Turns Into Reality , a story about a young boy's encounter with a strange creature in the woods of New Jersey. Monsters. The very word brings to mind everything from the famous Loch Ness monster to the nameless terrors that lurked underneath your bed as a child. But, where did the these images and legends come from? Are they purely fantasy, or are they based on some darker truth? Let's find out. The Greeks and Romans had a plethora of fantastic monsters and half human/half animal creatures that are now thought to be purely fantasy and myth. But, there have been reports, even as recently as our modern age, of creatures that fit the descriptions of some of these mythical monsters. One of them is the Satyr. Many years ago I came across the story and the pictures of two mummified bodies found over in a part of Europe that bore all the characteristics of what the ancients wrote about satyrs. I was dumbfounded. Both bodies has been extremely well preserved and one was clearly male and the other clearly female. Both bodies had the upper torso of a human male and female, but had long shaggy black hair on the heads with horns protruding from the head and very long canine teeth. From the waist down the legs ended in cloven hooves and was also covered in long shaggy black hair. The bodies had been laid in an underground tomb together in a large stone sarcophagus.

Cryptozoological Case File #0003 - The Solimões River... Thing
Thanks to the number of comments for the prior Cryptozoological Case File , I've expanded a briefly mentioned - and exceptionally bizarre - cryptid encounter into a full-out post. Unlike the prior Case File sightings, this one is highly disreputable and admittedly just for fun. 'Tis the season, I suppose.
The account was originally published in the late New York Herald a tabloid), but due to the lack of availability, I'll have to rely on a reprint from StrangeArk itself taken from an Indiana newspaper's reprint. The article's length is substantial - almost 5000 words - so I'll skip to the relevant parts knowing the full version is securely and freely available.
Conversions are my own.

Justifications for cryptozoology
Scientists have demonstrated that some creatures of mythology , legend or local folklore were rooted in real animals or phenomena. Thus, cryptozoologists hold that people should be open to the possibility that many more such animals exist. In the early days of western exploration of the world, many native tales of unknown animals were initially dismissed as mythology or superstition by western scientists, but were later proven to have a real basis in biological fact.

Welcome!
This section is devoted to cryptozoology and the creatures whose existence on our planet is discussed, either because they are supposed to be extinct or because scientists consider there are not enough evidences or living specimen that can be observed. However, many new and unique animals including not only insects and plants, are still being found by scientists today in the many unexplored areas of the rain forest, the oceans, or underground and there is room for new discoveries.
Animals such as the Komodo dragon, the tuatara, the megamouth, the okapi, the mega frog and the coelacanth have all been discovered, or rediscovered recently. But there are also monstrous creatures such as the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot or Chupacabra whose existence seems to belong to the fantasy realm. The search for such animals called cryptids plays a key role in convincing public opinions that animal and vegetal species are threatened and should be preserved at all costs. Discover the many creatures that still remain hidden from us and from which we know very little.

The People Behind Cryptozoology
This is a list of many of the cryptozoology personalities, dead and alive, who have fundamentally changed the direction cryptozoology has headed over the years. Coleman, Loren. Loren Coleman is one of the world's leading cryptozoologists. Coleman has written several books and more than a hundred articles on the subject, has appeared frequently on radio and television programs, and has lectured from Idaho to London. Loren Coleman, who is of Eastern Cherokee and Highland Scottish descent, defines himself as a cryptozoologist in search of the realities and facts behind folklore, eyewitness accounts, and tangible evidence of unknown and as-yet-to-be scientifically described animals. Coleman, a native of Illinois, has been investigating, in the field and in the library, cryptozoological evidence and folklore since the yeti caught his interest in 1960, leading him to research mysterious panther sightings and reports of apes in the American Midwest. His first articles were published in 1969. Loren Coleman obtained an undergraduate degree in anthrolopogy at Southern Illinois University (which he chose because of the Illinois bottomland ape sightings gathered from that region by folklorist John Allen). He received a Masters of Social Work from Simmons College School of Social Work in Boston. He has done post-masters work in anthropology and family violence.

Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology in definition is the study of unidentifed animals not yet cataloged in any field of zoology. From bigfoot to lake monsters this field seems to perplex thousands yet be lashed out at by well acredited scientists and bright minds. Man-kinds on going drive to know everything there is to know about life has pushed its limits to the extreme. What is left is cryptozoology and with it comes some of the most fasinating stories and experiences ever told. Unknown Explorers has become a place the community can gather to discuss such creatures and organize campaigns to get answers. We leave no rock unturned and if anyone is going to find, debunk, or identify any of these creatures, it will be members of the UE family.

Thunderbird By Craig Heinselman The Comanche tribe call it ba'a' and the Potawatomi use the name chequah, but most people know of this mystery animal as Thunderbird. Although gigantic birds are reported in the past and present from various areas of the globe, the Thunderbird is isolated to North America. Native Americans believed that these giant birds brought thunder and rain with them as they flew through the air by flapping their wings, and lightning by closing their eyes. Nevertheless, the distinction between the stories of the Native Americans and people of today are not too far apart. Modern reports of Thunderbirds arise from various locations in North America, with a large occurrence from Pennsylvania to the Central states. Mark A. Hall, one of the foremost investigators of the Thunderbird story, gives the following description of the avian cryptid drawn from numerous sightings: "The bird is distinguished by its size and lifting capabilities exceeding those of any known bird living today anywhere in the world. Wingspan estimates are necessarily all guesswork. But observers sometimes have had the benefit of a measurable object for comparison or the benefit of time to observe a resting bird. The results most often provide sizes of 15 to 20 feet. The bird at rest or on the ground appears to be four to eight feet tall. Typically the coloring of the birds overall is dark.."
