The Denizen of Lake Champlain By Craig Heinselman When one says Lake Monster, the initial response is a connection to the most famous lake creature of them all, Nessie of Loch Ness in Scotland. However, North America has a rich history of Lake Creatures as well. Ranging from Ogopogo in Okanagan Lake of British Columbia, to Tessie of Lake Tahoe in California to perhaps the most famous lake creature Champ from Lake Champlain in Vermont, New York and Quebec (Canada).
Lake Champlain [MAP ] has been called the other great lake due to its size and depth. The lake borders Vermont and New York on the American side and Quebec on the Canadian side, and runs from Whitehall, New York to the Richelieu River in Quebec. Stretching 109 miles in length and up to 11 miles in width, the lake boasts impressive depths to 400 feet and a water area of 440 square miles. The lake itself formed around 10,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age, prior to that the Champlain area (named after the explorer Samuel de Champlain from his exploration in the 1600's) was made of an arm of the Atlantic Ocean called the Champlain Sea.
The current interest in the creature of Lake Champlain stretches back to July 1609 when Samuel de Champlain recorded seeing a serpentine like creature in the lake. However, this is a false statement often circulated. It is understood more so that Champlain did visit the lake and described some of the native species, including gar, but did not describe what would be called "Champ" today. His exploration though does mark the beginning of the modern "Champ" era though, and for that he is irrevocably tied to the possible creature in the lake. The history continues with sporadic reports in the 1800's. Although few to no reports from the early-1700's, with few people in the area until the mid to late eighteenth century the chronicling of events from that time frame is next to impossible. But, as the area became more populated the reports appeared more regularly, until the mid 1800's when reports were coming in every year.

Cryptozoology
// zoneId = textEntitlement document.write(''); The term Cryptozoology was coined in 1959 by Lucien Blancou in a book dedicated to the foremost researcher of unknown animals, Bernard Heuvelmans. As the term has now become a standard part of modern vocabulary and appears in almost all dictionaries, it is defined as "the science of hidden animals". It combines the three Greek words: kryptos zoon and logos , which mean, respectively, hidden, animal, and discourse. In 1955, Heuvelman published On the Track of Unknown Animals and the new discipline was born. By 1982, the International Society of Cryptozoology was founded at a meeting held at the Smithsonian Institution. According to this meeting, Cryptozoology concerns "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they were not supposed to occur, either now or in the past), as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or recent past...What makes an animal of interest to cryptozoology...is that it is unexpected". To be an animal of interest, it also must have at least one trait "truly singular, unexpected, paradoxical, striking, emotionally upsetting and thus be capable of mystification" according to Bernard Heuvelman. The most famous creatures of Cryptozoology are the spectacular and disputed Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch and Colossal Squid. And while these legendary creatures have made the study of

For years, naturally, I would answer the above question with one person's name: Bernard Heuvelmans. Heuvelmans seemingly promoted the notion that he coined the word, and left it at that. Then, on 24 August 2001, Heuvelmans died, and I wrote an obituary , which found its way as far as the London Times , which propelled notice of his death to the world. Part of what I credited Heuvelmans as accomplishing, as the "Father of Cryptozoology," was the invention of the word "cryptozoology" itself.
On the Track of Unknown Animals . The book was soon reprinted in English and several other languages, becoming an international bestseller with over one million books in print through 1995. Supposedly, the first published use of the word "cryptozoology" was in 1959 when a book by Lucien Blancou was dedicated to "Bernard Heuvelmans, master of cryptozoology."
But now, thanks to Mark Rollins, an American environmental manager and artist, it has been brought to my attention that the answer to the question, who invented the word "cryptozoology," is not so simple. Rollins read my eulogy in December 2001, and emailed me that he remembered from Heuvelmans' book

Merfolk-like animals not necessarily related to the present dugong and manatees - their classical scientific explanation: In the northern Pacific, south of the Aleutian Islands, an unidentified merfolk-like animal of much smaller size (5 feet long) observed for over two hours by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741, and described by him as a "sea-ape." It seemed devoid of forelimbs, and had an asymmetrical tail of which the upper fin was longer than the lower one, as is the case in sharks. Could this be the aquatic form of primate alluded to above? Roy P. Mackal suggests that this animal, which sometimes raised itself one-third of its length out of the water (as pinnipeds often do), could be either a northern form of the leopard seal ( Hydrurga leptonyx ), only known at present from the Antarctic Ocean, or a very young specimen of a surviving zeuglodon (

CRYPTOZOOLOGY
Join the ultimate quest for the world's most mysterious creatures and become certified as a cryptozoologist! Cryptozoology is a combination of anthropology and zoology in which researchers try to find and study animals that are only rumored to exist. In other words, cryptozoologists study animals and other creatures that have not yet been accepted by science as real. They look for specimens of unknown creatures they refer to as "cryptids." In a way, cryptozoologists are a specialized branch of monster hunters. Cryptozoology does not normally collect or study UFO reports, ghosts, or even animal apparitions. Nor do cryptozoologists normally study out-of-place animals or newly-discovered small animals and insects, since finding new species of such creatures is fairly common among biologists. Therefore, the goal of cryptozoologists is to discover evidence of a new species or subspecies of large unknown animals. Bernard Heuvelmans, the author of the first book on cryptozoology ( On the Track of Unknown Animals ) hoped to make cryptozoology a science and separated it from other fields of study involving more "paranormal" sightings, as early researchers in this field were tempted to include folklore and mythological creatures in their studies. Today, however, cryptozoology remains by definition a speculative and borderline science. When a new species is discovered, it immediately becomes part of the province of biology.

Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals (whether large or small), to date not formally recognized by what is often termed Western science or formal zoology but supported in some way by testimony (in its broadest definition) from a human beings. It is not an excat science as much of it goes beyond scientific explanation and more into the metasciences. The term cryptozoology (adding the Greek prefix kryptos, or "hidden" to zoology to mean "the study of hidden animals") is often attributed to zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans. However, Heuvelmans himself in his book In the Wake of Sea Serpents attributes coinage of the term to the late Scottish explorer and adventurer Ivan T. Sanderson. Heuvelmans' 1955 book, On The Track of Unknown Animals traces the scholarly origins of the discipline to Anthonid Cornelis Oudemans and his 1892 study, The Great Sea Serpent. Loren Coleman, the modern popularizer of cryptozoology, has chronicled the history and personalities of the science in his books. Another notable book was Willy Ley's Exotic Zoology (1959). Ley was best known for his books on rocketry and related topics, but he also wrote a number of books about animals.

The hidden science of hidden animals. Cryptozoology is the study of animals that don't exist. OK, so this definition is more than a little tongue-in-cheek, but it is essentially true. Cryptozoologists spend their time looking for beasts such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Yowie but, despite these animals being rather large and exhaustive efforts spent on searching for them, there is still no conclusive proof that they exist. For this investigation of cryptozoology, we focus on a single animal, the thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger (also known as the Tasmanian Wolf). The last confirmed record of this animal still alive was 1936 in the Hobart Zoo. Despite more than 60 years of searching, no one has yet produced clear evidence that this animal still exists. The cost of searching for thylacines and the dubious benefit of conducting such searches raises serious questions about the rationale for continuing, particularly when the money could be better spent on the conservation of other endangered animals. I talk with Dr Jeanette Muirhead, University of New South Wales, who has been studying thylacines and carnivorous marsupial for over a decade. Jeanette explains what a thylacine is, what is known about its history, who goes searching for it and why they could find better things to do with their time. And a note for nitpickers; the howling you hear during this episode is a recording of dingoes (so far as I could find, there are no available sound recordings of thylacines).

Cryptozoology - Sea Creatures
In our vast oceans, there are still possibly many creatures yet to be discovered. Often, unknown sea creatures are labeled "sea monsters" and "sea serpents" when there may actually be a plausible (or not so plausible) explanation for what they are. Cryptozoology, the study of animals which do not exist according to science, attempts to make sense of some of these legendary sea creatures.

Criticism
Cryptozoology has received little support in mainstream science and is considered a pseudoscience by mainstream zoologists and biologists. Noted objections to cryptozoology include unreliable eyewitness accounts, lack of scientific and physical evidence, and over-reliance on confirmation (confirmation bias) rather than refutation. As historian Mike Dash notes, few scientists doubt there are thousands of unknown animals, particularly invertebrates, awaiting discovery; however, cryptozoologists are largely uninterested in researching and cataloging newly-discovered species of ants or beetles, instead focusing their efforts towards "more elusive" creatures that have often defied decades of work aimed at confirming their existence. The majority of mainstream criticism of cryptozoology is thus directed towards the search for megafauna cryptids such as Bigfoot, the Yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster which appear often in popular culture, but for which there is little or no scientific support. Scientists argue that mega-fauna cryptids are unlikely to exist undetected in great enough numbers to maintain a breeding population, and are unlikely to be able to survive in their reported habitats due to issues of climate and food supply. For example, most experts on the matter consider the Bigfoot legend to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

    Bigfoot makes tracks online
Monsters Comments (0) Add Comment A Texas man, a self-styled Bigfoot researcher, has posted a video he claims to have taken near Tofino in July 2006. Claims of the creature on Vancouver Island go back many years, and a Comox Valley man who has researched Bigfoot, John Bindernagel, claims to have found footprints in Strathcona Park near Mount Washington. He is concerned that the ability to post videos by anyone claiming it to be a Sasquatch will damage efforts to do genuine scientific research into the phenomenon. In 2005 Bindernagel told the Daily News that since 1850 there have been about 100 sightings on the Island. In the same time there have been about 400 sightings in B.C., a number he thinks is low due to fear of being mocked. He is now working on a second book about the phenomenon to argue why scientists should give it serious consideration.

We are active in conservation, cryptozoology education and community work with both adults and children, but in the last few years things have changed. Increasingly idiotic legislation from successive governments has produced an education system aimed at teaching children to pass exams, and very little else. Add to this the social changes which have made it almost impossible for children (and adults) to study Natural History as a hobby, and you have a situation which we believe is a tragedy. Because without amateur naturalists there would have been no Darwin, no Linneaus, no Gerald Durrell, no David Attenborough, and no Centre for Fortean Zoology. And without the amateur naturalists of the 21st Century, from whence will the next generation of zoological savants and freethinkers emerge?
