Cybernetics
R. Vaughn Spring 2002 Cybernetics focuses on how systems function and how they control their actions, and how they communicate with other systems or with their own components. Cybernetics helps give rise to some new fields like cognitive science and neurobiology and has been useful in formulating dozens of ideas and bits of applied math. A very simple cybernetic system will consist of what (Littlejohn, 2001) calls a sensor, comparator, and activator. The sensor is used to provide feedback to the comparator, which in turn decides if the machine is off basis. The comparator then gives guidance to the activator. This then provides an output, or feedback and the feedback is in some way affective to the environment. This concept of feedback is essential to the concept of cybernetics. In the real world this theory can help explain how a simple organism responds to feedback, like how a heater shuts on or off. It can also explain more complex systems like the relationship between a boss and co-workers. This theory is very relevant and practical at any level because it optimizes the transmit ion of feedback through any sort of communication channel, and it explains how the system functioned. Works Cited Norbert, Weiner.

"Getting Started" Guide to Cybernetics What does the word "cybernetics" mean? "Cybernetics" comes from a Greek word meaning "the art of steering".
Cybernetics is about having a goal and taking action to achieve that goal.
Knowing whether you have reached your goal (or at least are getting closer to it) requires " feedback ",
a concept that comes from cybernetics.
From the Greek, "cybernetics" evolved into Latin as " governor ". Draw your own conclusions. When did cybernetics begin? Cybernetics as a process operating in nature has been around for a long time.
Cybernetics as a concept in society has been around at least since Plato used it to refer to government In modern times, the term became widespread because Norbert Wiener wrote a book called "Cybernetics" in 1948. His sub-title was "control and communication in the animal and machine". This was important because it connects control (a.k.a., actions taken in hope of achieving goals) with communication (a.k.a., connection and information flow between the actor and the environment). So, Wiener is pointing out that effective action requires communication.

Cybernetics treats not things but ways of behaving. It does not ask "what is this thing?" but "what does it do?" and "what can it do?" Because numerous systems in the living, social and technological world may be understood in this way, cybernetics cuts across many traditional disciplinary boundaries. The concepts which cyberneticians develop thus form a metadisciplinary language by which we may better understand and modify our world.

    What This Is
This is a list, with reviews, of suggested books, periodicals, television shows and computer programs for a classroom curriculum or individual study in cybernetics and systems theory. It does not (yet) include a course plan, glossary, or extended bibliography. I was asked to write this by some teachers who received a copy of class notes I prepared for a course in "Understanding Whole Systems" sixteen years ago at the University of California at Santa Cruz. They asked how I would revise it based on what I know today. This document answers that question. [A similar web site exists at the Principia Cybernetica Project . - ABS 8/11/96]

    What is cybernetics?
Cybernetics is the interdisciplinary study of the structure of regulatory systems. Cybernetics is closely related to control theory and systems theory. Both in its origins and in its evolution in the second-half of the 20th century, cybernetics is equally applicable to physical and social (that is, language-based) systems. Contemporary cybernetics began as an interdisciplinary study connecting the fields of control systems, electrical network theory, mechanical engineering, logic modeling, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, anthropology, and psychology in the 1940s, often attributed to the Macy Conferences.

    Simulated reality
Simulated reality This is different from the current, technologically achievable concept of virtual reality. Virtual reality is easily distinguished from the experience of "true" reality; participants are never in doubt about the nature of what they experience. Simulated reality, by contrast, would be hard or impossible to distinguish from "true" reality. The idea of a simulated reality raises several questions:
    • Is it possible, even in principle, to tell whether we are in a simulated reality?

The following links provide general background information on the field of Cybernetics and Systems Theory , an interdisciplinary academic domain. This material was collected and is provided in the context of the Principia Cybernetica Project , but can be consulted independently of the rest of the project. Although there are relatively few research centers and even fewer educational programs devoted to the domain, a lot of activity is going on in between established departments. This is shown by the number of associations , conferences and journals active in the domain. The best way of getting acquainted with the main ideas of cybernetics and systems theory is to read a few of the classic books or papers defining the domain. Some of these books are freely available through our Principia Cybernetica library . Other, specific bibliographic references can be found in the library database of the Department of Medical Cybernetics and AI at the University of Vienna. There also exists more general reference material , including our own Web Dictionary of basic concepts.

    W. Ross Ashby (1956): An Introduction to Cybernetics Principia Cybernetica has selected Ashby's "Introduction to Cybernetics" as a classic book that deserved to be published again electronically. The original version has been out of print for many years. A few copies may still be found in libraries or ordered through the Amazon bookshop W. Ross Ashby is one of the founding fathers of both cybernetics and systems theory . He developed such fundamental ideas as the homeostat, the law of requisite variety , the principle of self-organization , and the principle of regulatory models . Many of these insights were already proposed in the 1940's and 1950's, long before the presently propular " complex adaptive systems " approach arrived at very similar conclusions. Whereas the concepts surrounding the complexity movement are often complicated and confused, Ashby's ideas are surprisingly clear and simple, yet deep and universal. Photo: W.R. Ashby, dec. 1955, Stanford (Copyleft. 2002. No Rights Reserved) This elegance of thought is illustrated in particular by the present book, which is still the only real textbook on cybernetics (and, one might add, system theory). It explains the basic principles with concrete examples, elementary mathematics and exercises for the reader. It does not require any mathematics beyond the basic high school level. Although simple, the book formulates principles at a high level of abstraction. For more concrete and extensive illustrations of systems principles, you may refer to our other electronic books, "

Cybernetics is a branch of mathematics that is concerned with information flow in complex systems (e.g. in computers). Processes in such systems are self-maintaining; they swing around a center. Like a biclycist, the process is in equilibrium because the wheels keep turning around. Feedback is the preferred term for this phenomenon. Feedback takes place when the result of a series of actions affect the preconditions for theses actions, so similar processes keep repeating themselves again and again. If feedback is positive , the preconditions are affected in such a way that certain processes are consistently either strengthened or weakened (examples are population growth, progress, depression, war). With negative feedback , "dynamic equilibrium" is maintained in the system - the system stays in place by keeping in motion. Cybernetics has may applications in sciences such as biology, economy, statistics, ecology, psychology, astronomy and meterology. Bateson , who had been close to the American group that originally developed cybernetics in the 1940's, brought cybernetics to anthropology at an early stage. The influence of cybernetics is also clearly visible in as diverse authors as

Norbert Wiener, a mathematician, engineer and social philosopher, coined the word "cybernetics" from the Greek word meaning steersman. He defined it as the science of communication and control in the animal and the machine. Ampere, before, him, wanted cybernetics to be the science of government. For philosopher Warren McCulloch, cybernetics was an experimental epistemology concerned with the communication within an observer and between the observer and his environment. Stafford Beer, a management consultant, defined cybernetics as the science of effective organization. Anthropologist Gregory Bateson noted that whereas previous sciences dealt with matter and energy, the new science of cybernetics focuses on form and pattern. "Compared to the analytical procedure of classical science with resolution into component elements and one-way or linear causality as basic category, the investigation of organized wholes of many variables requires new categories of interaction, transaction, organization, teleology..." Ludwig von Bertalanffy "This new development has unbounded possibilities for good and for evil." Norbert Wiener , Cybernetics, 1948
    Introduction
Many of the concepts used within the complexity sciences derive originally from work done in the mid 20th Century on Cybernetics (Wiener), based on the earlier work on Information Theory (Shannon), and General Systems Theory (von Bertalanffy). These ideas were all attempts to quantify in a rigorous way the treatment of systems as an interdisciplinary science. In other words they were a break from the old views that specialist subjects required specialist ideas. Additionally cybernetics is concerned with the control of systems, the issues of regulation and stability that also face us in the treatment of complex systems. Most recent work on cybernetics has related to mechanical systems (e.g. robots and bionics), but these ideas have always been more general and here we shall restate their relevance to biological and social situations.
    Systems
Systems are the lifeblood of complexity thinking and can be defined as a group of interacting parts functioning as a whole and distinguishable from its surroundings by recognizable boundaries. Systems have properties that are emergent, that are not intrinsically found within any of the component parts. They exist only at a higher level of description (e.g. an engine isn't a feature of valves, pistons, or any set of parts in isolation, they have to be suitably inter-connected).
