16 Oct 2002 15:27 A science which seems to have dissolved into the others. A lot of good science was done under this banner; it just doesn't seem to hold together. Cybernetics helped give rise to some new fields, like cognitive science ; it disseminated about a dozen ideas and bits of applied math which have proved useful (in, e.g., neurobiology control without feedback . It may be that we haven't exhausted the potential of a science of communication and control, but I think at this point the burden of proof would be on the optimists. Dissolved? Not entirely. There's an old joke that if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate, and not everything associated with cybernetics has gone into solution. Caked on the bottom of the reaction vessel we find: A prefix which seems indispensible to marketroids; the occassion for a great deal of vaporizing in the social sciences and humanities; and a peculiarly navel-gazing sub-sect of systems theory , which isn't exactly God's gift to the advancement of learning in the first place. History - Wiener Ashby , Herbert Simon . Origins in mathematical logic physiology , engineering, statistical mechanics . Predecessors - Rashevsky, Lotka, Cannon, Sherrington (?). cybernetics - science of communications and control within systems - choice over instinct
Cybernetics is the science of control and communications in animals, including humankind, and machines. The study of cybernetics has been used in various ways since ancient times to attempt to explain and understand and manage the effective workings of all manner of systems - social, organisational, animal, mechanical, electronic and others. As such, the cybernetics concept (notably 'the first law of cybernetics') is immensely relevant to the modern development of management, and one's own role and potential within systems of all kinds. The organisation in which we work; the world in which we live; the people around us - these are all systems.

The theoretical study of communication and control processes in biological, mechanical, and electronic systems, especially the comparison of these processes in biological and artificial systems. [From Greek kubernts, governor, from kubernan, to govern.]
- cybernetic adjective
- cybernetically adverb
- cyberneticist or cybernetician (-n-tshen) noun Cybernetics Cybernetics, interdisciplinary science dealing with communication and control systems in living organisms, machines, and organizations. The term was first applied in 1948 to the theory of control mechanisms by American mathematician Norbert Wiener . Cybernetics developed from investigations into how information is transformed into desired performance. The science arose out of problems that were encountered in the development of so-called electronic brains and of automatic-control mechanisms for military apparatuses. According to cybernetics, the human brain and nervous system coordinate information to determine which actions will be performed; control mechanisms for self-correction in machines serve a similar purpose. This principle, known as feedback , is the fundamental concept of automation. One of the basic tenets of cybernetics is that information can be statistically measured in accordance with the laws of probability. Purposive behavior in humans or in machines requires control mechanisms that maintain order by counteracting the natural tendency toward disorganization.

From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Cyberethics) Next (Cyberspace) Ready Example of cybernetic thinking. On the one hand a company is approached as a system in an environment. On the other hand cybernetic factory can be modeled as a control system. Cybernetics is the interdisciplinary study of the structure of complex systems, especially communication processes, control mechanisms, and feedback principles. This field is closely related to control theory and systems theory. At the same time, both in its origins and development in the second-half of the twentieth century, cybernetics is equally applicable to social (that is, language-based) systems. Cybernetics is always and only involved when the system under scrutiny is in a closed loop, where action by the system in an environment causes some change in the environment, and that change is manifest to the system via information or feedback that causes changes in the way the system then behaves, with all this in service of a goal or goals. This "circular causal" relationship is the necessary and sufficient condition for a cybernetic perspective.

The Major is designed primarily for highly motivated students interested in interdisciplinary activities in life sciences, behavioral sciences, and the computational, control, communication and information branches of engineering and computer sciences. Primary emphasis is on integrative computational and systems biology studies. Students have several options for in-depth studies: a coherent integration of courses selected from one of five designated concentrations in Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Neurosystems, Biomedical Systems or Computer Systems; or from the broader concentration areas of life sciences, behavioral sciences, engineering and applied mathematical sciences, from these areas.
The Major is appropriate preparation for employment or for graduate studies in any of the concentration areas, with emphasis on interdisciplinary activities. It is especially geared toward interdisciplinary computational, biosystems/systems biology training of research-oriented students, preparing them for graduate/postgraduate studies and research. It is also appropriate preparation for professional school studies in medicine, public health, dentistry, business, engineering and law.

Basics of Cybernetics First published [v1.0] 14:18 GMT 28th March 2003; this version [v1.3 - new hyperlinks] 10:20 GMT 29th January 2007 Earlier versions of this material appeared in Smith (1997; Chapter 4) . It is simplified here and supported with hyperlinks. 1 - Control Engineering (pre-1948) One of Humankind's greatest problems is the relative weakness of the human body. Ever since civilisation began, humans have struggled to supplement their physical strength by external means wherever possible. They have used draught animals to pull their ploughs and carts, and variations on the "mighty five" simple inventions (the lever, the wheel, the inclined plane, the screw, and the wedge) to move their obstacles and erect their buildings. But the bigger the weight involved, the greater the risk of accident and injury. All power sources - be they your own muscles, harnessed oxen, rushing water, wind, steam, or whatever - require control, and the more powerful the power source, the finer that control needs to be. The name given to the resulting technology is control engineering In the early days, of course, control was exercised by the person using the mechanism in question. For example, when the millers of yesteryear needed to turn their mills back into the wind every time it shifted, it involved manhandling several tons of wood and iron. And they had to put up with this for about 600 years before Edward Lee, in 1745, developed the mill "fan-tail" to do the job automatically for them [

    SOME BACKGROUND OVERVIEW
    Stuart Umpleby
1982, revised 2000 There are many definitions of cybernetics and many individuals who have influenced the direction of cybernetics. Cybernetics takes as its domain the design or discovery and application of principles of regulation and communication. Cybernetics treats not things but ways of behaving. It does not ask "what is this thing?" but "what does it do?" and "what can it do?" Because numerous systems in the living, social and technological world may be understood in this way, cybernetics cuts across many traditional disciplinary boundaries. The concepts which cyberneticians develop thus form a metadisciplinary language through which we may better understand and modify our world. INTRODUCTION 1987 ASC Compilation of Cybernetics Definitions
    Larry Richards
October 1999 In 1987, when I was ASC president, I developed a list of definitions/descriptions that have been added to and distributed at ASC conferences since then.
