Forum Introduction Signal processing has played an increasingly important role in a wide range of disciplines in science and technology. Research and development in signal processing are driving advancements in many high-tech areas in the U.S. including communications, entertainment, multimedia, medical and scientific imaging, and human-computer interaction. Signal processing has its foundations in mathematics, physics, and computer science, which are traditionally strong fields of study in Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF), and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) are pleased to announce the second Digital Signal Processing Summer School/Seminar (DSPSS) to be held at HCMUT from Saturday 21 June to Wednesday 2 July, 2008 (including weekends). The intent of DSPSS is to address a high level of interest and to develop competence in signal processing among students and researchers in Vietnam. Furthermore, DSPSS aims to foster research and training collaboration between U.S. and Vietnamese scientists. Distinguished professors from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, the University of California at San Diego, and the Johns Hopkins University will teach four short courses at DSPSS'08, namely Image Processing, Video Processing, Multimedia Communications, and Real-time DSP Systems. Each course will last for three days with lectures in the morning and lab exercise sessions in the afternoons. In addition, there will be seminars on current cutting-edge research and open problems in signal processing. There will also be a large number of students from the U.S. participating at DSPSS 2008.
