    Yizhousaurus, the Earliest Intact Sauropod
Monday November 1, 2010 First things first: some less-than-responsible news outlets have been touting Yizhousaurus as the very first sauropod , which is complete nonsense (how does one identify the "first" member of a 200-million-year-old race?). Rather, this new Chinese discovery is the earliest sauropod to be represented by a complete skeleton, a rare event for these types of dinosaurs, whose heads were easily detached from the rest of their bodies after death (the fact is that the majority of sauropods, even famous genera of the late Jurassic period like Diplodocus and Apatosaurus , have been reconstructed from headless specimens).

Origin of Dinosaurs Birds: The Late Evolution of Dinosaurs Dinosaurs and Hollywood
    Origin of Dinosaurs
The ancestry of dinosaurs can be traced back some 230 million years ago to the Late Triassic. At this time, all landmasses were united into a gigantic continent called Pangea. The breakup of this enormous landmass together with significant changes in global climate, and the disappearance of primitive lineages of archosaurs provided impetus for the divergence of dinosaurs. Afterwards, the rapid evolution of critical physical innovations equipped these animals with the specializations required to rule over all Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystems.
Lagosuchus (click to expand) All dinosaurs belong to a group of reptiles called archosaurs-a group that also includes crocodiles and a variety of Mesozoic reptiles (pterodactyls and others) that are often misinterpreted as dinosaurs. The anatomical characteristics of both the earliest known dinosaurs and their archosaurian relatives suggest that the common ancestor of all dinosaurs was a small bipedal predator, which had forelimbs shorter than hind limbs. This ancestor was probably similar to the 235-million-year-old Lagosuchus from Argentina.

This Color 3-D slideshow was created by artist/photographer Ron Keas in 1987 Ron is a pioneer of 3-D photography. For the past 15 years he produced the web's only color stereograph sets of National Parks, including Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. He now lives in Lake County California photographing nature, and painting pictures. Ron is also an artist, well known for his portraits of Marilyn Monroe, and most recently as America's most prolific Obama artist , having completed over 20 oil paintings of the President. Two of these paintings were on the front page of the NY Times, Sunday Edition. Others are in books and Calendars. Ron sells limited and open edition prints of his paintings. His work is considered to be highly collectible. Ron is a talented musician, singer, inventor, poet, gourmet cook, impressionist, who can balance his violin on his nose while doing an impression of James Stuart quoting Bob Dylan in Spanish. Follow the links in Ron's websites and you will see some amazing things indeed!..
The Show begins with a 3-D trip through the solar system, heading toward Earth, as it zooms in and out of the scenes, and pans the dinosaur images, adding greatly to the 3-D experience. To make this 3-D slideshow, Ron first made 3-D anaglyphs by photographing Dinosaur models in natural surroundings, and in terrariums he built on his front porch. He lighted the terrarium scenes with colored lights, a black light and a volcano in the background. He used dry ice for fog. Using a single camera on a slide bar, he took stereo images, to create red and blue 3-D anaglyphs. These he made into a 3-D slideshow for your computer screen.

      1. Dinosaurs walked the earth for over 165 million years.
      2. They lived during a period of time known as the Mesozoic Era, or Age of Reptiles… at the end of the Cretaceous Period they became extinct… that was 65 million years ago… during this time there was a great deal of volcanic activity and many earthquakes… many people believe that dinosaurs became extinct because an asteroid hit the earth changing the climate dramatically… it is believed that dinosaurs couldn't adapt to these changes.
      3. The word dinosaur means terrifying lizard… the name was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842.
      4. The oldest known dinosaur is Eoraptor, a meat-eater that lived 228 million years ago.
      5. Most dinosaurs hatch from eggs, and they could not fly or live in water.
      6. Dinosaurs are classified as reptiles… they are divided into two groups based on the structure of the hip… one group has lizard-like hips and the other group has bird-like hips.
      7. Most paleontologists, scientists that study dinosaurs, believe that birds are the only surviving dinosaurs… so dinosaurs aren't really extinct because their descendents are still living.

Easier - Dinosaurs are large reptiles that lived millions of years ago. There were many different dinosaurs. Dinosaurs came in many different sizes and shapes. They also lived differently and in different places. Some were meat-eaters, others ate only plants. Some dinosaurs were enormous, up to 150 feet long and weighing more than 77 metric tons. Others were much smaller. Harder - The name dinosaur comes from the term Dinosauria , which means 'terrible lizards.' However dinosaurs were only distantly related to lizards. Dinosaur is the name of a prehistoric reptile group that first appeared on the earth about 230 million years ago. They lived in nearly all natural settings, from open plains to forests to the edges of swamps, lakes, and oceans. Then about 65 million years ago, the dinosaurs died out. They were not 'rediscovered' by man until the early nineteenth century, when their fossil remains were first recognized.
