Little is known about the dodo, a famous flightless bird thought to have become extinct in the 17th Century. No complete skeleton has ever been found in Mauritius, and the last full set of bones was destroyed in a fire at a museum in Oxford, England, in 1755. Researchers believe the bones are at least 2,000 years old, and hope to learn more about how dodos lived.

Habitat
Although many pictures and stories place the dodo along the shores of Mauritius, it was actually a forest-dwelling bird. The island of Mauritius is home to a variety of biomes, such as plains, small mountains, forests, and reefs all along the shores. However, the dodo made its home primarily in the forest. The dodo: 'A turkey designed by committee'
By Jonathan Fryer
BBC, in Mauritius At first glance the Mauritian coat of arms looks like any other, until one notices that the creature on the left is a dodo rampant. The concept of a rampant dodo is so deliciously absurd that it's hard not to giggle. For all the evidence we have suggests that the dodo was singularly cumbersome and defenceless. Hence, maybe, its Latin name, didus ineptus. Mauritius' rampant dodo (left)
The Dutch, who settled the previously uninhabited island in the early 17th century, referred to the dodo as the walgvogel, or "ghastly bird." This was apparently because, no matter which way you cooked it, its flesh was as tough as old boots. However, that didn't stop the colonisers hunting the poor dodo down. Even in their cups, the Dutchmen could outrun the flightless bird, and then finish it off by biffing it on the head.

"Ajoneuvopoolipino" on veikeän humoristinen ajatus siitä, miten ajoneuvojen yhteiskäytöstä voitaisiin tehdä helppoa, houkuttelevaa ja kohtuuhintaista. Keski-Pasilan radanvarren kaupunkiviljelypuisto 2012 Mikkelin suuntaviivat Dodon 15-vuotiasta menneisyyttä, poreilevaa nykytilaa ja valoisaa tulevaisuutta pohdittiin Mikkelin Org-päivillä. Kaupunkiviljely on vuoden ruokailmiö Gloria-lehti on nimennyt kaupunkiviljelyn vuoden ruokailmiöksi.

Natural Language Learning/Computational Psycholinguistics
My principal research interest is Natural Language Learning (NLL), otherwise known as Machine Learning of Natural Language and Ontology (MLNL, MLNLO) or Computational Psycholinguistics or Computational Cognitive Linguistics. The focus is biologically plausible models, and while implementation techniques may very from neural networks to statistical models or grammar-like rule based systems, the emphasis is always that the model could be implemented using in a neurologically plausible way consistent with known neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Related interest thus include Brain Imaging and Neuroscience as well as Cognitive Psychology
Natural Language the Natural Way
The idea is that rather than trying to figure out the grammar of a natural human language like English, or trying to learn it from various linguists' ideas of how sentences should be parsed, we get the computers to learn it the same way a baby does - which includes embedding the computer in a real or simulated world so that it can learn about language and the world and the connections between them which give rise to meaning. Conversely, we seek to implement and formally test models and theories from Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Linguistics.

THE SONG OF THE DODO
By David Quammen, Scribner, 704 pages.
I n the annals of science there are many instances of pure, unleavened bad luck thwarting a researcher's best efforts. But there may be no more heartrending occurrence than that which befell naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, in August of 1852, aboard the ship Helen. For four years Wallace had slogged through the mud, swollen rivers and mosquitoes of the Amazon basin, assembling a huge collection of exotic fauna. Then, in the middle of the Atlantic on his return voyage, the ship's other cargo of balsam resin spontaneously combusted. Wallace escaped to a lifeboat, and watched every pickled bird and dried butterfly go up in flames. He whiled away his time sketching dolphins and seabirds before being rescued. And, as David Quammen notes in "The Song of the Dodo," something important came of this tragedy: the wreck of the Helen forced Wallace back out into the field to the Malay archipelago where, simultaneously with Darwin, he developed the theory of evolution. Don't let Quammen's subtitle "Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions" scare you off. Yes, this is a big book, over 700 pages, and it deals with big science. But it's filled with stories of inquisitive humans like Wallace who, almost by chance, have drawn a complex picture of where species come from, and some frightening speculation about they are headed.

W hen we Midwesterners long for "home cooking," we're probably thinking meat loaf, burgers, mashed potatoes, apple pie. Aderonke Kehinde (pronounced ah-der-RAHN-kee kuh-HIN-dee), who's lived thousands of miles from home the last few years, has a list like that with a few adjustments. Instead of meat loaf and burgers, she prefers fried chicken; for the potatoes, mashed yams; for the apple pie, fried plantains.
Caption: Aderonke Kehinde, shown here with her Roast Chicken, Jollof Rice and Fried Plantains, learned to cook by watching her mother. Kehinde, along with her husband Modupe (moh-DOO-peh) and their 4-year-old daughter Ife (EE-feh), are from Ibadan, Nigeria, and are part of a sizable Nigerian community in Metro Detroit. The Kehindes have been living in Harper Woods for more than a year while Modupe completes a residency in internal medicine at nearby St. John Hospital. Before that, they lived in Britain for several years. Aderonke Kehinde, who has a law degree, is trying to decide whether to take some required classes and sit for the Michigan bar exam. Meanwhile, she concentrates on raising Ife, and keeping the family heritage nourished with Nigerian comfort food.
