Introduction The following science activities are aligned with and support the implementation of the State of Maine Learning Results. As the Science and Technology section of the Maine Learning Results states, Helping students develop curiosity and excitement for science and technology while they gain essential knowledge and skills is best achieved by actively engaging learners in multiple experiences that increase their ability to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. It was with this in mind that these activities were developed. The activities encourage the development of basic science concepts through activity-based, learner centered approaches. The hands-on nature of the activities can be exciting and afford students an opportunity to become actively involved in their own learning. Many ecosystems, such as the North American prairie and chaparral ecosystems , and the South African savanna , have evolved with fire as a natural and necessary contributor to habitat vitality and renewal. Many plant species in naturally fire-affected environments require fire to germinate. Fire suppression can lead to the build-up of inflammable debris and the creation of less frequent but much larger and destructive wildfires. Campaigns in the United States have historically molded public opinion to believe that wildfires are always harmful to nature. This view is based on the outdated belief that ecosystems progress toward an equilibrium and that any disturbance, such as fire, disrupts the harmony of nature. More recent ecological research has shown, however, that fire is an integral component in the function and biodiversity of many natural habitats, and that the organisms within these communities have adapted to withstand, and even to exploit, natural wildfire.

NIH-NSF Ecology of Infectious Diseases Program:  A Joint Program for Multidisciplinary Research Notice Number: NOT-TW-11-001 Key Dates Release Date:   October 29, 2010 Related Notices NOT-TW-07-001 Issued by Fogarty International Center ( FIC Purpose This notice updates and supersedes the previous Guide Notice, NOT-TW-07-001 , published in the NIH Guide, November 30, 2006.  The Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have identified ecological sciences, including field biology and mathematical modeling, socio-ecology, and evolution as essential disciplines to understand and predict transmission of zoonotic and other infectious diseases that involve biotic or abiotic vectors, including diseases of humans, other terrestrial, freshwater or marine animals, and plants.  The FIC and the NSF will continue this multi-year collaboration on an important initiative to advance our ability to address the environmental and public health components of disease control.  As described in the NSF Program Solicitation ( NSF-10-616 U.S. and foreign institutions are eligible to apply.  The FIC mission prioritizes collaborative projects with scientists in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) focused on significant health threats in their countries.  Other NIH components have participated in the past and may do so again in the current cycle.  Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NIH or NSF program officials prior to submitting an application.  It is anticipated that six to eight awards will be made in fiscal year 2011 for projects to begin in the summer of 2011, subject to the availability of funds.  Each EID project may receive NIH support of up to $350,000 in direct costs, or NSF support of up to $500,000 in total costs, per year for up to five years.
