This is a graduate level course concerned with theory and application of linear regression methods. The classical regression model is discussed, and the statistical properties of the estimator are examined. The effect of violations of the classical assumptions are considered, and appropriate estimation methods are introduced. This course is the first of a two-course sequence. At course completion, a successful student will:
    • understand the statistical foundations of the classical regression model. be able to explain the properties of the least-squares estimator and related test statistics. be able to apply these methods to data and interpret the results.

Group Leader: Professor Anindya Banerjee There are seven members of the group, two of whom are also members other applied research groups. Group members are supervising a variety of PhD students either in econometric methodology or in empirical work in applied areas. Econometrics is a core discipline in all the Economics Department teaching programmes and the research of the group informs this. Members of the group have well-established links with major research organisation, and government departments and all engage in collaborative research with colleagues at other universities throughout the world. Specialist areas of research include: methodology of economics in relation to the philosophy of enquiry, Granger causality in co-integrated systems, continuous time models and differential-difference equations, seasonal unit root testing, labour econometrics, time-series models of seasonal data, multilevel and random effects models for complex cross-classified data structures, educational evaluation, applied modelling in housing economics, applied econometric models in climate change, the environment and natural resources.

RATS (Regression Analysis of Time Series) is a fast, efficient, and comprehensive econometrics and time series analysis software package. For more than two decades, it has been the econometrics software of choice at universities, central banks, and corporations around the world. Our current release, Version 7.3, is easier to use than ever while continuing to offer the most advanced tools available for cutting-edge econometrics research. We'll take a closer look at the RATS program below. For more details, see the List of Features page or click on any of the menu items at left. You can also download our most recent RATS Brochure in PDF format, which includes general information on Version 7, a list of features, and information on the CATS cointegration analysis package.
      Econometrics and Data Management
RATS provides all the basics you expect, including linear and non-linear least squares, forecasting, SUR, and ARIMA models. But it goes far beyond that, with support for techniques like GMM, ARCH and GARCH models, state space models, and more. RATS also offers unmatched support for Vector Autoregression models, and is one of the few programs to offer spectral analysis capabilities. RATS can handle time series of virtually any frequency, including daily and weekly, as well as panel and cross-section data.
