Consumption or Wealth?
The theory that human labor is the source of wealth has led us to believe that more people can always make more wealth, as if resources are unimportant. That was true when human labor was the weakest link in the chain of production before machines multiplied our labor power. After the industrial revolution, the old value of frugality still limited consumption to what was really necessary. With that low level of consumption the automation of production created unemployment. We chose to cure that unemployment by replacing grandpa's frugality with consumer waste. Full employment requires that we consume all that full employment can produce, even if that's more than we want or need. The consumer economy is benefited by unrepairable goods, planned obsolescence, throw-away living, and war. It seeks increased consumption to make jobs, but an efficient system cannot develop so long as we make growing consumption our goal.
We have lost sight of the goal of economic activity.
Our goal should be to provide goods and services. Any work that may be involved is just a means to that end. The consumer economy is not designed to make people wealthy; it is designed to make people consume more. If consumption means "use-up" then we could say that our wealth is approximately all that we ever acquired minus all that we ever consumed.
Consuming All We Can Produce
An efficient economy would produce all the goods we need, in contrast to our consumer economy that seeks to consume all the goods we can produce. Without the use of demand stimulation, war, and other methods of increasing waste, there would be a shortage of paid work in any automated economy. Should we go home and open cans to keep our can openers

The Fate of Arabia Felix
September 28th, 2006 I was reading something and found out about an interesting and (I think) relatively unknown incident that, had it played out differently, could have significantly altered the course of history. So I decided to write an article about it, and here it is. Incense is a mixture burned in religios rituals. Two most important ingredients are frankincense and myrrh. They are both obtained by collecting the resin which leaks when their respective trees are cut. When burned, these resins produce strong odour. Frankincense tree:

Contemporary Roman historian Strabo in his work Geography gives an account of how Romans decided to conquer Arabia Felix. In 26 BC, on orders from Emperor Augustus, Roman governor of Egypt, Aelius Gallus, took upon organizing a military campaign with the goal of finding the source of incense and subduing it to Roman power. 10 000 soldiers were assembled in Egypt, Romans and Egyptians with 1000 Nabatean auxillaries and 500 Jews. Nabatea was a north Arabian kingdom under Roman influence and Nabateans had agreed to help the Romans. Syllaios, a Nabatean governor, became their guide and thus they began their expedition. Roman expedition:
Roman march back to the sea took only two months, which reinforced their belief that they were purposefully misled by their guide. When they reached the Red Sea, they crossed back to Egypt with the remains of the expeditionary force. Thus ended their ambitious expedition and incense remained in Arab hands. Syllaios, the Nabatean guide, was tried for treason, found guilty and beheaded.
