Ecotoxicology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The term ecotoxicology was coined by René Truhaut in 1969 who defined it as "the branch of toxicology concerned with the study of toxic effects, caused by natural or synthetic pollutants, to the constituents of ecosystems , animal (including human), vegetable and microbial, in an integral context” (Truhaut, 1977). Ecotoxicology is the integration of toxicology and ecology or, as Chapman (2002) suggested, “ecology in the presence of toxicants”. It aims to quantify the effects of stressors upon natural populations, communities, or ecosystems . Ecotoxicology differs from environmental toxicology ecology toxicology physiology ... analytical chemistry and many other disciplines. The ultimate goal of this approach is to be able to predict the effects of pollution so that the most efficient and effective action to prevent or remediate any detrimental effect can be identified. In those ecosystems that are already impacted by pollution ecotoxicological studies can inform as to the best course of action to restore ecosystem services and functions efficiently and effectively.

http://www.bios.edu/icohh/ecotoxicology/ecotoxicology.html
The Marine Ecotoxicology Group at BBSR, led by faculty scientists Richard Owen, Hank Trapido-Rosenthal, Tony Knap and adjunct faculty scientist Michael Depledge, undertakes research investigating the distribution and impact of contaminants and other bi-products of human activity (for example thermal pollution) within tropical marine ecosystems. This research follows a long history of pollution studies at BBSR in tropical marine ecosystems and now focuses both on identifying new pollutant threats to vulnerable marine organisms such as corals and development of molecular diagnostic tools that give early warning of declining ecosystem health and links to low level contaminant exposure. Much of these techniques are taught within an intensive three week course in marine ecotoxicology held each summer at BBSR. Distribution and impact of contaminants in tropical marine ecosystems
BBSR's analytical chemistry expertise is recognized by the United Nations and other organizations dealing with global contamination. In addition, recent development of molecular biology facilities at BBSR allows the mechanisms of pollutant effects to be investigated in great detail. Not only is this research relevant for understanding how chemicals affect wildlife, but it also permits early detection of threats to human health. Current areas of activity include studies of distribution of new generation antifouling paint biocides in tropical marine environments and their impact on the photosynthesis of coral zooxanthellae (

RAMAS Stage
Generalized Stage Modeling for Population Dynamics
RAMAS Stage lets a user build, run and analyze discrete-time models for species with virtually any life history. It is useful for modeling species with complex life histories or other biologies in which stage membership (rather than age) determines the demographic characteristics of an individual. RAMAS Stage comes with templates for species from many taxa (such as mammals, insects, fish, birds and plants) which are easy to customize. RAMAS Stage allows a model to include environmental factors which vary through time, and it yields summaries of the expected abundance of stages and the uncertainty of those expectations. It also estimates the risks that an abundance will fall below, or grow above, any threshold. General life histories. Simple models can be based on developmental stage. These include widely used transition matrix models such as Leslie or Lefkovitch formulations. More complicated models can be constructed to represent more complex life histories that may include multidimensional structure (for example age and size simultaneously) and linear or nonlinear transitions.

Plant Phenomics and HTS Screening for Agrochemicals LemnaTec’s team of scientists develops hard- and software solutions for Plant Phenomics, high-throughput and high-content screening of seedlings, insects and other organisms and for the automated evaluation of bio tests in ecotoxicology. Digital images are primarily taken by the Scanalyzer systems PL, HTS and 3D, all set up in a modular design. Using advanced LemnaTec image processing algorithms, every visible sample parameter (e. g. colour, shape, size, architecture) is subsequently measured and correlated with experimental records (e. g. genetic data). Our aim: to visualise and analyse the biology beyond human vision.
