of the time of the Old Kingdom (3,000-2,400 BC). One relief from the tomb of a high-ranking dignitary named Nimaatra is notable for its skillful representation of a very important canonical scene of a ritual meal (2,5000 BC). Also typical of the sculpture of the Old Kingdom is a funerary group of painted limestone portraying the nobleman Udjankhdjes and his wife. The Middle Kingdom (2,100-1,788 BC) is represented by a number of excellent funeral relics, largely stelae and small statuary in wood and stone. The masterpieces of the collection are the statue of Pharaoh Amenemhat III (2,100 BC ) and a world-famous example of Egyptian secular literature, a papyrus text dating back to the 19th century BC The Shipwrecked Sailor. The next period is that of the New Empire (1,580-1,050 BC), represented by a number of artifacts and cult objects made of bronze, wood, bone

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology
    Introduction
The Petrie Museum houses an estimated 80,000 objects, making it one of the greatest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world. It illustrates life in the Nile Valley from prehistory through the time of the pharaohs, the Ptolemaic, Roman and Coptic periods to the Islamic period.
    Press Release
Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, University College London (UCL) Unveils Major Re-Display of Egyptian Treasures 7 October 2010 For the first time in over 30 years, the Petrie Museum has staged a major redisplay of its encyclopaedic collection of 80,000 Egyptian and Sudanese artefacts. The museum tells the story of the Nile Valley from pre-dynastic Egypt to the time of the pharaohs and pyramids to the emergence of Islam. Highlighted in the new display are the museum’s many ‘firsts’: a dress from 5000 BC; a fragment of the first kinglist calendar from c.2900 BC; the earliest example of metal from Egypt; the earliest example of glazing; and the oldest will on papyrus paper. The museum has also introduced an exciting new interpretative approach that brings objects to life by revealing the people and places behind them. There are vast numbers of everyday objects in the collection, such as combs, hair curlers, shaving razors, and mirrors, which provide insight into the way average Egyptians lived. In this regard, Professor Stephen Quirke, curator of the Petrie Museum, said: “The Petrie takes on one of the most important tasks for museums and universities today rehumanizing the past.”

This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery. Please follow the links below for related online resources or visit our current exhibitions schedule. About the Exhibition From the earliest times, Egyptians denied the physical impermanence of life. They formulated a remarkably complex set of religious beliefs and funneled vast material resources into the quest for immortality. This exhibition focuses on the understanding of the afterlife among Egyptians some 3,000 years ago, in the period of the New Kingdom (1550-1069 BC) through the Late Period (664-332 BC). The New Kingdom marked the beginning of an era of great wealth, power, and stability for Egypt, and was accompanied by a burst of cultural activity, much of which was devoted to the quest for eternal life. The exhibition is divided into six sections: Journey to the Afterworld, The New Kingdom, The Royal Tomb, Tombs of Nobles, The Realm of the Gods, and The Tomb of Thutmose III.

    Ancient Egypt
Impressive monuments were erected in the name of kings, from monumental temples for the gods to the pyramids marking the burials of rulers. The British Museum collection includes statuary and decorated architecture from throughout pharaonic history, often inscribed with hieroglyphs. Many other aspects of ancient Egyptian culture are represented: coffins and mummies of individuals, but also furniture, fine jewellery and other burial goods. These reflect the practice of lavish burials for the wealthy, which included the royal family, government officials and the priesthood. Texts preserved on papyrus help reveal the complex administration of the country, but also include magical, medical and mathematical works and poetry. Pottery vessels and a variety of tools and agricultural equipment hint at the day-to-day lives of ancient Egyptians. Egypt did endure several periods of foreign domination, by Palestinian, Nubian, Persian, Greek and Roman rulers. Yet throughout, temples to the Egyptian gods continued to be built in the traditional style and aspects of Egyptian religion spread throughout the ancient world.

Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan
The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan at the British Museum houses an important collection of objects which illustrate every aspect of the cultures of the Nile Valley, from the Neolithic period (c. 10 000 BC) until the twelfth century AD. The main activities of the department comprise the care, study, publication and display of the collection, but other projects include organising special temporary exhibitions both in the Museum and abroad, lending objects to international exhibitions, and assisting non- national and other institutions in Great Britain with loans. Departmental staff also undertake fieldwork in Egypt and Sudan.
The curatorial work of the department is supported by a team of administrative staff and museum assistants, who supervise the storage, movement and display of the collection. An illustrator, specialising in drawing Egyptian and Sudanese artefacts, prepares graphical material for publication and display. A comprehensive library of material relating to the cultures of ancient and medieval Egypt and Sudan is housed in the department, along with archival material relating to the collections and the cultures in general.
