Electric Vehicles
Why are electric vehicles so popular? I don’t know about everyone else but if you just ask the kids they’ll tell you they’re all for electric vehicles. It doesn’t matter what kind of electric vehicles either. Make all the vehicles electric! After all, electric vehicles are fascinating and easy to use not mention easy on the wallet when it comes to thinking about buying gas. Maybe it’s the fact that electric vehicles run in an amazing and mysterious silent way. That’s got the roaring, gut throbbing internal combustion noises beaten hands down. Silence, it seems, is associated with thinking – at least conscious thinking occurs in the silence. Issues of reality and form and style and daydreaming are all part of this silent phenomenon. Marketing electric vehicles If every kid wants electric vehicles, maybe that’s the place to start marketing them. The other day I helped move a Barbie® Jeep. It’s an electric powered kid sized vehicle and is too heavy for one person to lift, let alone a child to lug around. Nevertheless, the toy is very popular and we both thought to climb in and take it for a spin. It’s fun, adventurous, and even parents love it. So much for child’s play!

An electric vehicle , or EV, is a vehicle with one or more electric motors for propulsion. The motion may be provided either by wheels or propellers driven by rotary motors, or in the case of tracked vehicles, by linear motors. The energy used to propel the vehicle may be obtained from several sources:
  • from chemical energy stored on the vehicle in on-board batteries: Battery electric vehicle (BEV) from both an on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) and a fueled propulsion power source: hybrid vehicle generated on-board using a combustion engine, as in a diesel-electric locomotive

ELECTRIC VEHICLES HOME INDEX CAR MANUFACTURERS BLUEBIRD ELECTRIC ... SOLAR CARS An electric vehicle is a vehicle whose motion is provided by electric motors . The motion may be provided either by wheels or propellors driven by rotary motors, or in the case of tracked vehicles, by linear motors . The electrical energy used to power the motors may be obtained from a direct connection to land-based generation plants, as is common in electric trains; from chemical energy stored on the vehicle in batteries or diesel fuel; from nuclear energy, on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers; or more esoteric sources such as flywheels, wind and solar. The reasons electric motors are used to drive vehicles are their fine control, high efficiency and simple mechanical construction. Electric motors often achieve 90% conversion efficiency over the full range of speeds and power output and can be precisely controlled. Electric motors can provide torque whilst not moving, unlike internal combustion engines , and do not need gears to match power curves. This removes the need for

Electric vehicles (EVs) are propelled by an electric motor (or motors) powered by rechargeable battery packs. Electric motors have several advantages over internal combustion engines (ICEs):
  • Energy efficient. Environmentally friendly. EVs emit no tailpipe pollutants, although the power plant producing the electricity may emit them. Electricity from nuclear-, hydro-, solar-, or wind-powered plants causes no air pollutants. Performance benefits. Electric motors provide quiet, smooth operation and stronger acceleration and require less maintenance than ICEs. Reduce energy dependence . Electricity is a domestic energy source.
EVs face significant battery-related challenges:
  • Driving range. Recharge time. Fully recharging the battery pack can take 4 to 8 hours. Even a "quick charge" to 80% capacity can take 30 min. Battery cost: The large battery packs are expensive and may need to be replaced one or more times. Battery packs are heavy and take up considerable vehicle space.
However, researchers are working on improved battery technologies to increase driving range and decrease recharging time, weight, and cost. These factors will ultimately determine the future of EVs.

History of Electric Vehicles
The Early Years (1890-1930)
The electric vehicle is not a recent development. In fact, the electric vehicle has been around for over 100 years, and it has an interesting history of development that continues to the present. France and England were the first nations to develop the electric vehicle in the late 1800s. It was not until 1895 that Americans began to devote attention to electric vehicles. Many innovations followed and interest in motor vehicles increased greatly in the late 1890s and early 1900s. In 1897 the first commercial application was established as a fleet of New York City taxis. The early electric vehicles, such as the 1902 Wood's Phaeton, were little more than electrified horseless carriages and surreys. The Phaeton had a range of 18 miles, a top speed of 14 mph and cost $2,000. While basic electric cars cost under $1,000, most early electric vehicles were ornate, massive carriages designed for the upper class. They had fancy interiors, with expensive materials, and averaged $3,000 by 1910. Electric vehicles enjoyed success into the 1920s with production peaking in 1912. The decline of the electric vehicle was brought about by several major developments:
  • By the 1920s, America had a better system of roads that now connected cities, bringing with it the need for longer-range vehicles.

The internal combustion engine (ICE) is the dominant propulsion method for motor vehicles but electric power has remained commonplace in other vehicle types, such as trains and smaller vehicles of all types. During the last few decades, increased concern over the environmental impact of the petroleum-based transportation infrastructure, along with the spectre of peak oil , has led to renewed interest in an electric transportation infrastructure. ... Home I've been involved with electric vehicles since late 1980s. It's been fun but challenging at times.
Electric Pickup Truck
The first electric vehicle I owned was an electric pickup truck. It was a 120 volt system that could barely make it up a slight hill to work. The range was short and the truck was heavy and under powered. It was a start, a learning experience.
Toyota Paseo conversion
My second electric car was a Toyota Paseo. The car was converted as a new car to electric and then sat for several years. I bought it and had Gary Flo upgrade it to something more acceptable in 1996. I drove that for two years and made lots of modifications on it before selling it after getting an EV1.
My third, fourth, and fifth EV were EV1s.I started out with one of the first ones that were delivered to the bay area. We liked it so much we got another one for my daughter to drive. Then the bad news came, the recall. We gave up both EV1s but two months later we got a new model with NiMH batteries.

The company is based in Los Angeles, California, with several facilities throughout the United States, is privately held by "Green" magnate Miles Rubin. The company gained prominence in 2005 when it began sales of the ZX40 electric vehicle, the first street-legal Chinese-made electric automobile sold in the United States. The company's electric vehicles, built on steel unibody chassis, are the world's first crash tested NEVs to achieve DoT, CARB and NHTSA compliance. Miles Electric Vehicles is a manufacturer and distributor of full electric vehicles manufactured in China to meet international car safety standards. The company was recently given the "Electric Car Company of 2007" award by Good Clean Tech. The current electric vehicle models include low speed all electric vehicles that produce zero tailpipe emissions and deliver strikingly low operating costs, making them a great fit for greening fleets nationwide.
