Electrochemistry
Electrolytic cell
  • electrolysis
    • Requires potential/voltage input. On the diagram, this is represented by a battery in the circuit. In contrast, a galvanic cell has in its place either a resister, or a Voltmeter.
    • The potential/voltage input + the cell potential must be > for the reactions to occur.
    • For electrolytic cells, the cell potential is negative, so a potential input greater than the magnitude of the cell potential must be present for electrolysis to occur.
    • In contrast, galvanic/voltaic cells already have a positive cell potential. Thus, no input is required for galvanic/voltaic cells.
    • In the diagram above, arrows are shown in red because the battery is forcing the flow of electrons. Normally, the electrons would want to flow the other way (or not flow at all).
  • anode, cathode
    • The following rules hold true for both electrolytic and galvanic/voltaic cells.
    • Anode is always the place where oxidation happens.
    • Cathode is always the place where reduction happens.
    • Mnemonic:
      • An Ox = ANode OXidation
      • Red Cat = REDuction CAThode
    • Anode shoots out electrons, Cathode takes in electrons.

Introduction
Electrochemistry encompasses chemical and physical processes that involve the transfer of charge. Some examples are electroplating, iron oxidation (rusting), solar-energy conversion, energy storage (batteries), photosynthesis, and respiration. Links to background documents on redox chemistry are listed below.
Electroanalytical chemistry
There are two categories of electrochemical processes that are applied to quantitative measurements:
  • potentiometry - measurement of a potential (voltage) electrolytic methods - measurement involving a current
  • In both of these categories, an electrochemical measurement can be related to the concentration of an analyte. See the Electrochemistry Index for links to specific electrochemical techniques.

    History of electrochemistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Electrochemistry , a branch of chemistry , went through several changes during its evolution from early principles related to magnets in the early and 17th centuries , to complex theories involving conductivity electrical charge and mathematical methods. The term electrochemistry was used to describe electrical phenomena in the late 19th century and 20th century . In recent decades, electrochemistry has become an area of current research, including research in batteries and fuel cells , preventing corrosion of metals, and improving techniques in refining chemicals with electrolysis and electrophoresis

The performance and specific cost of renewable resources make up only a small portion of the overall generation portfolio, in part because of the challenge of dispatching those intermittent and unpredictable power sources. This issue of Interface , guest edited by Jeremy Meyers of The University of Texas at Austin, focuses on Storing Energy for the "Smart Grid." Editor Krishnan Rajeshwar , in An Environmental Bomb , writes about how spectacular advances in technology and improvements in the quality of life, especially in the industrialized parts of the globe, have also left in their wake ravages to our resource base and damage to the eco-system and the environment. Cyclic voltammetry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Typical cyclic voltammogram where i p c and i p a show the peak cathodic and anodic current respectively for a reversible reaction. Cyclic voltammetry or CV is a type of potentiodynamic electrochemical measurement. In a cyclic voltammetry experiment the working electrode potential is ramped linearly versus time like linear sweep voltammetry . Cyclic voltammetry takes the experiment a step further than linear sweep voltammetry which ends when it reaches a set potential. When cyclic voltammetry reaches a set potential, the working electrode's potential ramp is inverted. This inversion can happen multiple times during a single experiment. The current at the working electrode is plotted versus the applied voltage to give the cyclic voltammogram trace. Cyclic voltammetry is generally used to study the electrochemical properties of an analyte in solution.

cyclic voltammetry waveform In cyclic voltammetry, the electrode potential ramps linearly versus time as shown. This ramping is known as the experiment's scan rate (V/s). The potential is applied between the reference electrode and the working electrode and the current is measured between the working electrode and the counter electrode. This data is then plotted as current (
