Forensic entomology is primarily associated with death investigations; however, it may also be used to detect drugs and poisons, determine the location of an incident, and find the presence and time of the infliction of wounds. Forensic entomology can be divided into three subfields: urban stored-product and medico-legal/medico-criminal entomology.

At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, date back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth. Though technically incorrect, the definition is sometimes widened to include the study of terrestrial animals in other arthropod groups or other phyla , such as arachnids myriapods earthworms land snails , and slugs Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology , entomology is a taxon -based category; any form of scientific study in which there is a focus on insect related inquiries is, by definition, entomology. Entomology
Overview
Welcome to the University of Alaska Museum Entomology Web Page. The collection was established as part of a NSF - funded Arctic Archival Observatory grant in late 2000.
The UAM Insect collection is the northern-most facility of its kind in the United States. It has the potential to become a world-class depository for dry and preserved-tissue samples of northern arthropods, primarily from Alaska. Although a young collection, we already have a backlog of more than 100,000 insects (mostly aquatics) from Alaska and other regions, including Canada, Eastern Russia, and the contiguous United States. The collection is currently in need of significant curatorial attention to make it an accessible and valuable resource. Stay tuned for what will surely be some exciting developments in the world of Alaskan insects at the museum!
Volunteers
If you have a few hours a week and would like to volunteer in the Entomology Department please contact the Curator, Derek Sikes.
Donations

The study of insects in the aquatic realm (entomology) should be one of your main  focuses as a fly fisherman. These pages are a start to help you identify the general insects you will find while fishing a stream. Flies like the Caddisflies, Stoneflies, Mayflies. Take some samples of these insects while out on the stream. Take some time in your day while fishing just to notice these insects and bugs. This will be the best time spent learning you will ever experience. This will greatly help you as a fly tier too. You can tie flies that more resemble the local aquatic species. Check out Jason Neuswanger aquatic insect site from Cornell University on

Ornamental Plant Entomology
This program is geared towards providing sustainable integrated pest management (IPM) systems for ornamental crops. In this effort, the program is testing current and experimental pest management products for efficacy, developing a research program to incorporate entomopathogenic nematodes into pest management practices, and identifying and finding methods of control for existing and potentially invasive pests that affect the ornamental industry. Top
Tropical Fruit Entomology
This program focuses on pests affecting fruit crops grown under tropical conditions. Projects include determining economic thresholds for target pests, determining the impact of management procedures on secondary pests or existing non-economic organisms, establishing sampling procedures, and correlating weather data and tree phenology with primary and secondary pest population fluctuation. The program emphasizes biological control of key pests affecting tropical crops by developing strategies, tactics and systems to achieve the integrated management of pests of fruit crops and developing environmentally friendly systems in natural south Florida ecosystems.
