How about the Architect who built a high-rise office building complex and did not install sidewalks? He only planted grass and he was roundly criticized: "What could he have been thinking?" Six weeks later he returned and installed sidewalksright where the tenants had worn pathways: taking their route, not the architect's.

Ergonomics is the science of designing tasks, equipment, tools, and the work environment to accommodate the capabilities and limitations of the majority of the workforce. Ergonomics enhances human performance including the health, safety and productivity of workers. A primary focus of efforts in this area has been to promote the musculoskeletal health of miners by reducing exposure to awkward postures, high force exertions, and repetition posed by mining tasks. The work in this topic area is supported by the NIOSH Mining Ergonomics program. See the NIOSH Mining Products page for software, guides, training materials or other items related to this topic.

Office Ergonomics Training This site contains office ergonomics information aimed at ergonomics committee members as well as office workers in general. The information here is based on the research literature whenever possible; it may not be consistent with some of the conventional wisdom that has persisted for decades, such as "sit up straight" or "have the monitor at eye level" or "the keyboard should be at elbow height." Office ergonomics deserves to be treated separately from general (industrial) ergonomics. The principles are the same, but there are so many subtle differences and different products that it's best to specialize. This site collects and publishes some "handouts" that have been used widely in training courses for office workers and ergonomists and health care professionals who work with office workers. The handouts have received good reviews with respect to their clarity, objectivity, and scientific basis. Some have been published in slightly different form in book chapters and manuals. We are pleased to share them with you. This site was developed by Chris Grant, PhD, now retired from ergonomics. Her Michigan-based ergonomics practice, F-One Ergonomics, was limited to office-related issues. Dr. Grant and other cited authors on the site are Certified Professional Ergonomists and Certified Industrial Ergonomists who have consulted in this field for years and have been involved in the development of national and international ergonomics standards. Dr. Grant has generously transferred the site to Dennis Ankrum, who will strive to maintain the standard of excellence she has set.

A committee of companies dedicated to the advancement of research in Office ergonomics and Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Disorders.
    http://www.oerc.org/
    • Home Welcome About Us
The Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC) was formed in 1991 by a group of US companies concerned by reports of an increasing number of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among office workers.
The goal of the OERC is to better understand the human and machine system that is comprised of the people who use office, information and communication technologies in a broad variety of settings. A fuller understanding of this interaction facilitates better product designs and more comfortable and productive human users.
The current objectives of the OERC are:
      • to understand the association between office work and discomfort, fatigue and MSDs, and to communicate its findings on their possible causes, methods of intervention and management by providing access to information for members, employers, manufacturers, workers and other interested parties on the association between office work and musculoskeletal disorders.

      About Our Members
By design, OERC members represent a diverse group of organizations with a common interest in complex human-machine systems, commonly referred to as office ergonomics. The members combine their knowledge and resources to both encourage and support the study of the many factors involved in this system.

zSB(3,3) Ergonomics Definition of Ergonomics The International Ergonomics Association has adopted this technical definition: ergonomics (or human factors ) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. That is not the most efficient definition of what ergonomics is. Let us keep things simple. Ergonomics is the science of making things comfy. It also makes things efficient. And when you think about it, comfy just another way of making things efficient. However for simplicity, ergonomics makes things comfortable and efficient. What is Ergonomics?
