    Ergonomics for Designers and Inventors
By Mary Bellis , About.com Guide

Typing on Ergonomic Keyboard Getty Images: Photographer Barbara Penoyar zSB(3,3) The word ergonomics is derived from the Greek words ergon for work and nomos for laws; ergonomics literally means natural laws. Ergonomics is the optimizing of the experience between human beings, and the designed objects and environments they interact with. According to the Eubios Ethics Institute, it is the relationship of humans with machines, in particular body posture in relation to engineering and includes features such as chair design, tool design, positioning of dials, room layout and computer interface which correspond to a healthy body form.
The Importance of Ergonomics to Designers and Inventors
In layman's terms, designing a product with ergonomics in mind means designing a product that feels good to use, is very efficient to use, and does not negatively impact the user. For example, an ergonomic computer keyboard would reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and improve the typing speed of the user.

    Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of workers. Computer use by school staff and students requires good ergonomics. Frequent and heavy lifting as well as pushing, pulling, or carrying of heavy objects among custodians and food-service workers is also an ergonomic problem in schools. And bus drivers are exposed to prolonged awkward postures and vibration. The level of risk depends on how long a person is exposed to these conditions, how often they are exposed, and the level of exposure. Poor ergonomics can lead to Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs), which are musculoskeletal disorders caused or made worse by the work environment. WMSDs can cause severe and debilitating symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling; reduced worker productivity; lost time from work; temporary or permanent disability; inability to perform job tasks; and an increase in workers compensation costs. Musculoskeletal disorders of any cause are among the most prevalent medical problems, affecting 7% of the population and accounting for 14% of physician visits and 19% of hospital stays. What is ergonomics?
Most people have heard of ergonomics and think it is something to do with seating or with the design of car controls and instruments. It is...but it is much more! Ergonomics is the application of scientific information concerning humans to the design of objects, systems and environment for human use. Ergonomics comes into everything which involves people. Work systems, sports and leisure, health and safety should all embody ergonomics principles if well designed. Why was the video recorder one of the most frustrating domestic items to operate? Why do some car seats leave you aching after a long journey? Why do some computer workstations confer eyestrain and muscle fatigue? Such human irritations and inconveniences are not inevitable - ergonomics is an approach which puts human needs and capabilities at the focus of designing technological systems. The aim is to ensure that humans and technology work in complete harmony, with the equipment and tasks aligned to human characteristics. Ergonomics has a wide application to everyday domestic situations, but there are even more significant implications for efficiency, productivity, safety and health in work settings. For example:

Often described as the science of everyday life, ERGONOMICS combines scientific knowledge of human performance with design and engineering to create systems, products and services which are safe, efficient and enjoyable to use. Human capabilities and limitations – whether physical, psychological, or organisational – are applied by ergonomists to specify the design requirements for everything from everyday consumer products to complex safety-critical systems. Whether at home, at work, or in transport, anything that has been designed for human use is relevant to ergonomics. The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) defines ergonomics as “the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance”. It further goes on to define an ergonomist as “an individual whose knowledge and skills concern the analysis of human-system interaction and the design of the system in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance”.
