The Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Project
Poster Number: Presenter/Primary Author: Karen McGlathery The Virginia Coast Reserve (VCR) is an extremely dynamic, heterogeneous coastal barrier landscape comprising mainland watersheds, tidal marshes, lagoons, and barrier islands. Our goal for the VCR LTER program is to develop a predictive understanding of the response of coastal barrier systems to long-term environmental changes in climate, sea level and land use, and to relate these to the ecological services the coastal barrier systems provide. Understanding and mapping plant distributions surrounding marsh hammocks within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER
Poster Number: Presenter/Primary Author: Christine Hladik Accurate habitat mapping in salt marshes is important for both management and conservation goals, as it provides information essential for identifying sensitive areas and documenting changes over time as the result of sea level rise or human perturbations. The goal of this study is to characterize patterns of marsh plant distribution in the salt marshes surrounding back barrier islands (hammocks) within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER. In the summer of 2007 the GCE LTER surveyed over 50 hammocks of different origin and size.

OBJECTIVES
The Systems Ecology program at the University of Florida uses quantitative methods to understand ecological systems of humanity and nature, and presents opportunities to learn designs for their interface and unification. The scope of the program includes small ecological systems, regional systems, national questions, planetary cycles, and theoretical properties common to all environmental systems.
OUR PROGRAM
The core of the program is designed to provide graduate education in holistic aspects of environmental systems around which knowledge and principles of environmental science can be organized.
Under the overall umbrella of the systems ecology program, students may pursue several options and certificate programs that allow for clustering of course work around a theme. These include:
Ecological Engineering
(Certificate)
Wetlands Studies
(Certificate)
(Certificate)
Hydrologic Sciences
(Certificate) Estuarine Ecology See additional information about our systems ecology/ecological engineering program PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS For entrance into the program, a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or science is required, and a general geology and basic economics course must be completed as background. Other competency courses are also required by the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences. Students may pursue either thesis or non-thesis MS/ME degrees. Advanced studies in Systems Ecology leading to the Ph. D are also offered by the Department of Environmental
