41. History, Land And Ethnology
A resource from TimorNet at University of Coimbra in Portugal.

The obscure history of East Timor
Here TimorNet offers you an inside look at East Timor in all it's facets. While the first part is meant to abridge the state of knowledge about history, the land and the Maubere people, the second half deals particularly with the conflict.
This work is in construction. After an introdutory discription of the situation and limits of East Timor's composing territories, we begin with a brief history that comprises the prehistoric vestiges and a historiography regarding mainly the colonial age during which the island was object of dispute between Dutch and Portuguese, and the Japanese occupation which ocurred in World War II despite the neutrality of the territory. In respect to the land there are entries about geomorfology , geology, climate flora and fauna , and finally natural resources with a call on the importance of petrol and coffee for the economy of an independent East Timor. This is followed by an approach to the ethnological background demography and the culture of the Maubere people.

of Giacomo Casanova made (about Ethnology (from the Greek ethnos , meaning "people") is the branch of anthropology that compares and analyses the origins, distribution, technology, religion, language, and social structure of the racial or national divisions of humanity. Compared to ethnography , the study of single groups through direct contact with the culture, ethnology takes the research that ethnographers have compiled and then compares and contrasts different cultures. Among its goals are the reconstruction of human history , and the formulation of cultural invariants , such as the alleged incest taboo and culture change, and the formulation of generalizations about " human nature ", a concept which has been criticized since the 19th century by various philosophers ( Hegel Marx structuralism , etc.). In some parts of the world (like the USA and Great Britain) it is also referred to as cultural or social anthropology, however ethnology is not only a single part of cultural anthropology. Ethnology has been considered as a

Ethnology - Definition
List of scholars of ethnology
Kinga Wakinga The Kinga were primarily agriculturalists with millet, beans, and some bananas who inhabited the Livingston Mountains of East Africa to a height of 10,000 feet and maintained a moderate amount of cattle but many sheep and goats. Their Nyakyusa neighbors considered the Kinga to be distinct and different, even though related. They found them to be dirty, fawning, and submissive in their habits and manners, (not a good marrisage prospect but good enough to fight along side of in the Konde revolt), and were eager to acquire Kinga iron and implements in exchange for food. Kinga priests claimed they belonged to a very old line, a line older than their chiefs. The priests also seemed to interpret subterranian water. The Nyakyusa would watch with fear and dismay as these pilgrims descended the mountain paths each year heading for Lwembe's shrine. Kinga were to be found in hidden areas, probably haveing been driven there by Magwagwar Ngoni, then the Wasagu, and even the Hehe, and were not easy to locate. They had little intercourse with their neighbors, and felt comfortable only in their mountains. While they provided early warning posts aginst invasion of the Nyakyusa territory from the south and east, the nyakyusa were not thankful and generally held the Kinga in contgempt, there being certainly no love lost between the Kinga and Nyakyusa. Merensky describes them as having no perticular physical type, their facial featureas and evolpment of the head and physique, all being different. Merensky found only one commons charachteristic; due to their mountain climbing the muscles on their legs were very well developed and they had acquired a distinct type of joggind while going up and down these heights. He, like the Nyakyusa, found personally dirty and their homesteads disordrly, Seemingly they wee adept only at navigation their mountains an skillfully creating beatiful hoes, knives, and spears from iron.

    Ethnology
Ethnology is the branch of anthropology that deals with the comparative cultures of various peoples, including their distribution, characteristics, folkways, etc. At the Miller Museum, Jewish ethnology is interpreted several different ways. Ritual and ceremonial objects representing Jews in different parts of the world are part of the permanent collection. While Jewish religious beliefs are universal, no matter where Jews have lived, the form of objects used to ornament the Torah scrolls, and of objects associated with life cycle and calendar celebrations adopt the artistic styles of the host society. Jews are broadly divided into three subcultures: Ashkenazim, Sephardim and Mizrachim. These three groups are further divided into smaller geographical groups based upon their own self-designation. Generally, the Ashkenazim are the Jews of Eastern and Central Europe, although in the most narrow sense, it refers to Germany and German Jews. In the 15th and 16th centuries Jews from the Germanic centers of Mainz and Worms emigrated to Eastern Europe. The cultural centers of Ashkenazic Jewry shifted to Bohemia, Moravia, Poland and Lithuania. One of the most distinguishing features of these Jews at that time was their use of a Judeo-Germanic language (Yiddish). One of the greatest losses in the Holocaust was the wholesale destruction of Yiddishkeit, the distinct cultural expression of the Eastern European Jewry.

The Ethnology/Linguistics Program emphasizes comparative and historical perspectives on critical social issues, focusing on both the social and cultural aspects of class, gender, ethnicity, nationalism, and territoriality. Power and difference as they are expressed in language, the politics of representation, the cultural construction of identity, expressive culture, political economy, immigration, and tourism are key areas of concern. Issues of social justice, human rights, and applied ethics inform faculty research and teaching in all of these areas. The Ethnology/Linguistics Program is also concerned with the study of language and language use from a distinctly anthropological perspective, recognizing the roles of social, cognitive, symbolic, and biological factors. There is particular focus on forms of linguistic interaction in their sociocultural settings.

Ethnological Research

While the Ethnology Collection has served as a source for scholarly research and education at the university for many years, it now shares its resources with the newly developed Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies. In conjunction with community partnerships and collaborative projects the Ethnology Collection provides a valuable cultural resource for the maintenance and revitalization of traditional material culture.
