Social learning and innovation in guppies and humans
I am interested in social learning and its consequences for the behaviour and evolution of animals. Currently, I am researching how guppies and humans balance social and personal information in environments of varying uncertainty. This work is being conducted with Simon Reader at Utrecht University and Ulf Toelch at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin.
Web decorations in orb-web spiders
Web decorations are curious silk structures included in their webs by many species of orb-web spider. May functions have been proposed for these structures including thermoregulation, web stabilisation, prey capture and defense against predators. Most recent studies have suggested that decorations perform a visual function by either attracting prey or protecting the spider. This work is ongoing in the the Behavioural Ecology lab at Macquarie University. Read more about web decorations

Human Evolution
Human evolution is a field of biolgical research concerned with the origin of humans. H omo sapiens and its ancestors are at the core but comparative analyses also include great apes, other primates, and mammals. Human Evolution is part of the discipline "physical anthropology" and requires a multidisciplinary approach involving evolutionary biology, primatology, genetics, paleoecology, geology, mathematics, linguistics, and others. The research at our department comprises:
Human Ecology
We would like to achieve a comprehensive process based on integrative questions involving multiple values, scales, tenures, uses, and needs.
We therefore refer to interdisciplinarity in more than a serial way concerning on the one hand the scientific research process itself and the involvement of scientists as citizens and citizens as scientists.

PetSmart Training Positive Reinforcement Real World Environment Puppy Education ... Beyond the juvenile period LEARN ABOUT YOUR DOG: PETSMART Training, What is Ethology? What is ethology?
Ethology is the study of animal behavior. Scientists, called ethologists, spend their lives studying and trying to understand how dogs communicate with each other. When ethologists seek to understand a behavior, they will ask questions about the behavior to determine its cause. The questions might include:
  • What is the immediate cause of the behavior? How did the behavior develop? How has this behavior evolved over time? What is the function of the behavior?
Seeking the answers to such questions allows ethologists to gather scientific knowledge about the behavior. Scientific knowledge is information that is gathered using very specific rules. The information gathered is that which can be observed objectively, such as the behavior itself and the environment in which it occurred. Observations are made, then verified by repeating the conditions and observing again. Observations that can be predictably repeated are called facts. Observation of canine communication signals and the interpretation of them are two different skills. If you aren't careful, you can make mistakes in either your observations or interpretations of behavior.

FEATHER PICKING AND SELF-MUTILATION IN COMPANION BIRDS
Tara Sager Introduction Feather picking and the associated self-mutilation behavior that occur in psittacines can be a distressing and frustrating challenge for many bird owners. This obsessive-compulsive disorder is seen in a number of species including parrots (such as Amazons or African Greys), Cockatoos, Macaws and Cockatiels. What is feather picking? As opposed to preening, the behavior of birds in which they groom their feathers and skin free from dirt or foreign particles and correct any feather distortions, feather picking is excessive self grooming, that includes picking at, plucking out, or chewing on feathers. In a severe case, the bird can be naked form the head down. Indicators of feather picking include the presence of healthy head feathers, feather loss, and/or mutilated feathers in body areas accessible to a bird’s beak (including the wing skin fold, inner thighs, and breast). Even more worrisome than feather picking is the associated self-mutilation, which can occur. Essentially, self-mutilation involves a bird chewing on its own flesh, often in the breast area.

Origins of the name
Greek language, as ethos ) is the Greek word for " custom ". Other words that derive from the Greek word ethos are: ethics and ethical. The term was first popularised in English by the American Myrmecologist William Morton Wheeler in . An earlier, slightly different sense of the term was proposed by John Stuart Mill in his System of Logic . He recommended the development of a new science, "ethology," whose purpose would be the explanation of individual and national differences in character, on the basis of associationistic psychology . This use of the word was never adopted, however. edit
Differences and similarities with comparative psychology
Ethology can be contrasted with comparative psychology , which also studies animal behaviour, but construes its study as a branch of psychology . Thus where comparative psychology sees the study of animal behaviour in the context of what is known about human psychology, ethology sees the study of animal behaviour in the context of what is known about animal

http://www.usask.ca/wcvm/herdmed/applied-ethology/behaviourproblems/lickderm.htm
Acral Lick Dermatitis (ALD)
The Problem: What is ALD?
Acral lick dermatitis (ALD), also known as lick granuloma or canine neurodermatitis is a stereotypic behaviour resulting in self-mutilation. A stereotypic behaviour refers to a pattern of movements or behaviours which are repeated without variation and seem to occur for no apparent purpose. Such things as pacing or excessive grooming are common types of stereotypies seen in domestic or captive animals. In ALD the stereotypy is self-licking, chewing or scratching, most commonly on the distal portions of the limbs. The repetitive licking creates areas of hair loss and the production of lesions which may range in size from several centimetres to the entire surface of the limb. The continuous self licking and chewing prevents the lesions from healing and may cause discomfort, pain and, in severe cases, crippling.
Contributing Factors:
Dealing with ALD: Treatment and Prevention
  • Ensure your dog gets sufficient exercise, not just in a yard, but also leashed walks where you will be interacting with your dog.
  • Take your dog to obedience classes or participate in dog sports such as agility or flyball. These will challenge your dogs as well as provide exercise and time to interact with other dogs.

Separation Anxiety in Dogs
Linked to this article is a short video clip which shows a dog displaying several behaviours typical of separation anxiety. The video has 3 distinct segments; 1) dog showing destructive behaviour within seconds of human departure 2) the same dog 20 minutes later howling and 3) the same dog showing excessive greeting behaviour upon return of the owners. Introduction
Separation anxiety in dogs is the fear or dislike of isolation which often results in undesirable behaviour. Separation anxiety is one of the most common causes of canine behavioural problems (Polin 1992; Voith and Borchelt 1985). As social animals, it is normal for puppies to form attachments to their mother and littermates. Once a puppy is separated from its family group, it becomes attached to its owner. Attachment implies a trusting relationship and is the foundation of a good, healthy bond between owner and pet (Polin 1992). However, when a dog becomes overly dependent on its owner, problem behaviours may result. There are many problem behaviours associated with separation anxiety including: defecation and urination in inappropriate locations, destructive behaviour, excessive barking and whining, depression, and hyperactivity. These behaviours may also be the symptoms of other problems. However, if undesired behaviours are clearly related to the absence of the owner, occur shortly after departure and a prolonged greeting response occurs upon the owner's return, separation anxiety is the probable cause (McElroy 1989). If a problem behaviour has persisted for an extended period, a visit to the vet will ensure that there are no underlying medical problems.
