Detection of Earth-like Planets with Large Telescopes
Using large space-based telescopes (>10-meter) Astronomers could search for terrestrial planets with atmospheres suitable for life as we know it. Spectroscopy could be used to detect the presence of Ozone, an indicator of oxygen in the atmosphere as well as water bands. Methane produced as a result of biogenic activity could be searched for using the same methods. Using telescopes in Earth orbit planets could be searched for using direct detection methods. Stellar coronagraphs can be used to supress the light from the planet's parent star making detection easier. There is a higher probability of detecting planetary companions around nearby stars in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is due to the fact that the star to planet flux ratio is less in this region of the spectrum than in the visible. To separate a planetary companion from its primary stellar halo, one must use a telescope (or array of telescopes) with an aperture (or baseline) B such that r/D is greater than or equal to the wavelength at which the observation is being carried out divided by the aperture (or baseline) of the telescope (or array of telescopes).

Earth is the only known inhabited planet in the universe to date. However, advancements in the fields of astrobiology, observational astronomy and discovery of large varieties of extremophiles with extraordinary capability to thrive in the harshest environments on Earth, have led to speculation that life may possibly be thriving on many of the extraterrestrial bodies in the universe. This interdisciplinary field encompasses the search for habitable environments in our Solar System and habitable planets outside our Solar System, the search for evidence of prebiotic chemistry , laboratory and field research into the origins and early evolution of life on Earth , and studies of the potential for life to adapt to challenges on Earth and in outer space Astrobiology makes use of physics chemistry astronomy biology ... geography and geology to investigate the possibility of life on other worlds and help recognize biospheres that might be different from the biosphere on Earth.

Introduction to Exobiology
You're driving in your car down dark road late one night with your friends. All of a sudden, you see a large circular object with blue lights spinning right in front of your car. A bright spotlight shines down on your car for ten seconds, and then leaves. As the object disappears before your eyes, you are left in amazement, wondering what just happened. Was that really a UFO? Is there really intelligent life out there in the universe? You turn around to ask your friends, only to find that one of them is missingÉ
Sound a little farfetched? OK. How about something a little more down to Earth.
You just got back from a two week vacation in Hawaii with your family. You walk into your room, throw down your suitcase, and sit on your bed. You glance over at the lamp on the table next to your bed. Reaching over to turn on the lamp, you notice a rather unpleasant smell. Looking down, there is a half full glass of what once might have been juice, but now is a nice bluish-green color with fuzz all around the edges. Yuck! Where did that come from?
Scientists have been asking these same questions for a long time now. Come explore the field of exobiology, the search for the origin of life on the Earth, and in the Universe.

A BIT OF BIOPHYSICS
Prior to my lecture on exobiology, we should review some biological concepts that are very important for the comprehension of the exobiology since the last century. I will start with the operational definition of life:
From the viewpoint of Biophysics, life is a state of the energy in some quasi-stable systems determined by a series of intervals that delay the spontaneous dispersion of the internal energy of those quasi-stable systems toward more potential microstates
An operational definition
An operational definition is generally designed to model a conceptual definition , to be precise, by using words and concepts to describe a variable.
Phase Space is the space at which all the possible states of a system are represented. The phase space is produced by the general positions and their corresponding conjugated moments.
A conjugated moment derives from the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy in relation to an integral coordinate.
Delaying is not the same as revert; although revert could cause a delay, it is not the behavior of processes or states in nature. Many authors say that life involves a violation of the second law of thermodynamics, or that it follows trajectories against entropy, which is not factual. The referred law indicates that the energy always flows from a space or system with a high density of energy toward another space or system with a lower density of energy, which is precisely how life occurs. The Universe has a higher density of energy than that of the biosystems. If it were not thus, then life would not be possible.

SIGNIFICANCE AND STATUS OF EXOBIOLOGY A paper presented at the annual meeting of A.I.B.S., Boulder, Colorado, on August 26, 1964 GILBERT V. LEVIN Hazleton Laboratories, Inc., Falls Church, Virginia ABSTRACT Although there are no direct data on extraterrestrial life, planetary observations and statistical considerations support the possibility of such life. The significance of the questions the “science” of exobiology may answer warrants its active pursuit. These questions range from whether life exists elsewhere to fundamental inquiries in all the sciences. The title of this paper, “Significance and Status of Exobiology,” has been carefully selected. The significance of the term “exobiology” is in dispute and there are those who declare that the subject has no status . The term is of recent origin and is intended to denote the study of extraterrestrial life. The argument arises not only from those normally protesting the adulteration of the English language with newly-coined words but from those who literally interpret the prefix “exo” as meaning “out of, outside, or outer layer.” Some contend that a better term would be “xenobiology” in that the prefix “xeno” connotes “strange or foreign.” Others feel that “biology” is sufficient, for it would encompass extraterrestrial creatures. These arguments may have semantic merit, but “exobiology” has been adopted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is now a part of the literature. A dispute over nomenclature should not discourage biologists from pursuing the subject.

Specific exobiology courses lacking Q I am a student of 10+2 Medical. How can I get admission in the Exobiology branch of biology?
Shilpa Kamboj, Chandigarh A Exobiology is a branch of biology that seeks to increase our knowledge of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Answers are sought to questions such as: To what extent did chemical evolution occur in the primitive bodies of the solar system? How did life originate on Earth, and what role did minerals play? Is there any evidence of the early interplay between biological and environmental evolution? What do molecular fossils tell us about early microbial evolution? How can the study of contemporary microbes or geochemical samples inform us of past events? The work of scientists in this branch also provides the conceptual basis and measurement criteria for future spacecraft missions to other solar system bodies such as Mars, Titan, and comets, in search of answers to such fundamental questions in non-terrestrial settings. No specific courses in exobiology are available at present in the country. This is a superspecialised field of science wherein scientists from a host of allied sciences contribute. Molecular biologists, microbiologists, bioengineers, biochemists, chemical scientists, astrophysicists, electrophysicists, oceanographers, astronomers etc. work in various organisations conducting research in this field such as TIFR, BARC, Astronomical Society of India etc. Considerable research is being undertaken in this field at NASA and SETI-funded organisations around the world.
