Exobiology
Of all mysteries of the universe, the possibility of meeting other intelligent species must be the most provocative. It would be the greatest achievement in the History of humankind to contact other intelligent species. Unfortunately, as I debate below, I don't know whether we would survive.
Galactic Civilizations
Geological time is in the order of millions of years. Life, which depends on the chemistry and conditions of a planet, also follows such large cosmological scales. Thus other intelligent species in the universe are not likely to be in the Bronze Age or in any age that happened to us in the last thousands of years. Possibly, if they are less intelligent than us, they would still be animals. But if we are to face a more advanced civilization they will be millions of years ahead of us because, by chance, they originated millions of years before. At a cosmological time scale, energy manipulation is a good method to classify a civilization. Nikolai Kardashev and Freeman Dyson developed the following classification for alien civilizations:
Type Level of Energy Control I Absolute control over a planet's energy.

Laboratory simulations show that a Titan-like atmosphere, primarily a N /CH mixture, under various energetic excitations forms not only HCN (CN) , and HC N (observed on Titan as a result of photodissociation reactions), but also

Introduction to Exobiology
You're driving in your car down dark road late one night with your friends. All of a sudden, you see a large circular object with blue lights spinning right in front of your car. A bright spotlight shines down on your car for ten seconds, and then leaves. As the object disappears before your eyes, you are left in amazement, wondering what just happened. Was that really a UFO? Is there really intelligent life out there in the universe? You turn around to ask your friends, only to find that one of them is missing
Sound a little farfetched? OK. How about something a little more down to Earth.
You just got back from a two week vacation in Hawaii with your family. You walk into your room, throw down your suitcase, and sit on your bed. You glance over at the lamp on the table next to your bed. Reaching over to turn on the lamp, you notice a rather unpleasant smell. Looking down, there is a half full glass of what once might have been juice, but now is a nice bluish-green color with fuzz all around the edges. Yuck! Where did that come from?
Scientists have been asking these same questions for a long time now. Come explore the field of exobiology, the search for the origin of life on the Earth, and in the Universe.

Exobiology: The Search for Life on Mars
Exobiologists seek to understand how life originated on Earth by studying chemical and physical conditions elsewhere in our solar system and our galaxy. The origin of life on Earth is not well understood but was evidently based on chemical evolution from simple compounds present on the newly formed planet to create a system of replicating organic chemicals. Unfortunately, it is difficult to study early Earth directly because the earliest geological formations have been largely erased by erosion and deposition. In contrast, on Mars we can still see the early crust in the form of heavily cratered highlands. Major exobiology goals for Mars are to
  • Determine whether life presently exists on Mars or, as is thought more likely, has existed in the past
  • Define the nature of early martian environments and understand differences from the early environments of Earth
  • Determine the history of the biogenic elements (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Sulphur, Phosphorus) on Mars and of organic chemistry there (that is, the chemistry of carbon bearing compounds whether biologic or abiologic in origin) In order to achieve these goals

    Careers in Exobiology
In field of exobiology entails many different disciplines. Physicists, biologists, and chemists are just a few of the types of occupations which have a place in exobiology. Indeed, exobiology is one of the most inter-disciplinary fields in the realm of science. With so many different types of jobs, exobiology is a fascinating field to work in, and because it is relatively new, it will be thriving for a long time to come. Lets look at some of the occupations in exobiology, and see if any of them interest you.
    Biologist
A biologist is someone who studies life. This is a pretty broad topic, so there are molecular biologists, microbiologists, bioengineers, biochemists, and numerous others. Each specializes in one area, but usually works with people who do not have the same job as themselves. For example, a molecular biologist studies biology at the molecular level. This includes studying enzymes and catalysts which are important to life as we know it. However, molecular biologists dont work all by themselves. A molecular biologist might be involved in creating a new drug for the treatment of prevention for some disease, and so would be working with chemists in the creation and manufacturing of a drug, as well as working with lawyers who need to provide the legal skills to put a new drug out on the market.
    Chemist
A chemist is someone who studies chemicals and their reactions. Most chemists work in laboratories. Work in the laboratory often includes determining the compostion of materials. This is very important in exobiology. Chemists in exobiology have studied meteorites which have fallen to the earth. In studying these samples, chemists are looking for clues to what the atmospheres and environements on other planets may have been. They also are looking for amino acids, especially homochiral amino acids, which would be a very good indicator of life elsewhere in the universe. Aside from exobiology, chemists are involved in most areas of the economy. Whenever a product is manufactured, chemists are involved to create the products composition, and to see if it is safe for the public.

Biologists are not unanimous on all the factors in the definition of life, but most agree that life is different from nonlife: It evolves or changes (by chance mutations or otherwise) as time goes on while interacting with its environment in a unique way. But most important, life is not a "thing", it is a process made up of an unimaginably large number of complex chemical reactions that collectively produce all the characteristics we associate with life.
