Located in the Astrophysics Branch of the Space Sciences Division at NASA s Ames Research Center. Specializes in the study of extraterrestrial materials and their analogs.

We also investigate the effects of interstellar, planetary and lunar processes (ultraviolet irradiation, heating and cooling) on the structure, composition and the evolution of these materials. Our goals are to provide:
  • quantitative information for interpreting observations from ground-, air-, and space-based observatories to guide instrument development for future missions, including small-satellite missions to understand the connections between extraterrestrial materials and the processes that form and modify them and to help improve existing astrophysical models.

From these experiments we have built up a database that has been used (in conjunction with astronomical data) to search for and identify molecules in space.
The scientists in the Astrophysics and Astrochemistry Laboratory have been actively involved in space missions and have done astronomical observations from space-, airborne-, and ground-based telescopes such as the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) and the NASA IRTF and NOAO Kitt Peak Telescopes.

Even some of Earth's most reilient species may find the changes too difficult to survive. Studying the effects of climate change can help us understand life's future on Earth. The Many Causes of the Great Dying Topic: Summary: More than 251 million years ago, Earth almost became a lifeless planet. Chemical evidence buried in rocks that formed during this major extinction indicates a devatated landscape with huge 'dead zones' in the oceans and runaway greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Trapped Rover Finds Evidence of Water on Mars Topic: Mars Summary: Although NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit is stuck in the soil of Mars, the rover is still gathering important data. The ground around Spirit holds evidence that water trickled into the subsurface fairly recently. The findings could have implications in the search for past or present life on Mars.

Wecome to the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology (CCAB) website.
Astrobiology has emerged as a new science for the new millennium. It seeks to understand life in the context of the wider cosmos. The new Centre will continue in the pioneering traditions of astrobiology started in Cardiff over 25 years ago, taking note of the many relevant discoveries that have been made in recent years. The Centre aims to combine the expertise of astronomers, biochemists and microbiologists to generate cutting edge science that would eventually enable us to answer the age-old question: where did we come from?

Geobiology, which we define as the study of the interactions between Earth and life on the planet over time, is an immense and exciting intellectual undertaking: much more dynamic than any single field. Welcome to USC Geobiology USC is home to one of the most exciting and extensive Geobiology programs in the world. In the past decade, we have put together a group of faculty covering virtually all of the areas required to launch an intellectual assault on the area of Geobiology, including: geology, biology, chemistry, geochemistry, paleontology, and, more recently molecular genetics and genomics. The work done by the USC Geobiology group is highly interactive, with many collaborations occurring between various USC laboratories, as well as among other colleagues from near and far.

Even after all the proper precautions have been taken at work, accidents can still happen. Work accident compensation is the money that is owed to you incase you are injured while on the job. Seeking out help to get this money will help you get a paycheck while you recover from your injuries. Without work accident compensation , you might go without an income for a while.

      Life on the Edge
A hands-on experiment for students to learn about life in extreme environments begins this week at 14,249 ft.
Jan. 13, 1999 : NASA scientists are joining forces with researchers from the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica and the University of California's White Mountain Research Station to conduct a unique educational activity in microbiology. It's a hands-on experiment designed for students of all ages to investigate life in extreme environments and to learn about the possibilities for life elsewhere in the Solar System.
In recent years scientists have begun to recognize that certain life forms on Earth can thrive under very extreme conditions. Viable microorganisms have been found living in acidic hot springs, buried under ancient permafrost, and even inside volcanic rocks.
Left: These hot springs at Yellowstone owe their vibrant colors to thermophilic (heat-loving) microorganisms, many of which can live and reproduce at temperatures near the boiling point of water. Photo courtesy Prof. Thomas D. Brock, University of Wisconsin.

    Background
From http://www.ebicom.net/~rsf1/vel/1918.htm In her book on the 1918 influenza(1) Gina Kolata calls attention to the often repeated phenomenon of how influenza epidemics can move quickly through a country, "hopscotching over some towns while felling others." She reports that "After an influenza pandemic of 1789, a young American doctor named Robert Johnson puzzled over how the infection could spread so far and wide, and so quickly" Dr. Johnson had discussed the rapid outbreaks in Great Britain and on ships at sea. Kolata reports that the 1918 flu's mortality rates peaked in Boston and Bombay in the same week, but New York, just a few hours from Boston, had its peak three weeks later" Kolata reports that Johnson finally decided that "influenza must arise from some
