Research and teaching Food Science Department of Food Science The Department of Food Science is housed in Stocking Hall Welcome to the Department of Food Science at Cornell University! We offer comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for leadership positions in the food industry, academia, and government. Our research programs are designed to expand understanding of the biological/microbiological, chemical, physical, sensory, nutritional, and engineering properties of foods and beverages. Our extension and outreach programs transfer research-based information and technology to consumers, food and beverage companies, and government agencies with the goal of enhancing the availability, quality, and safety of our food supply. On July 1, 2010, the Department of Food Science and Technology at Cornell's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York and the Department of Food Science on Cornell's main campus in Ithaca merged to form a single Department of Food Science. Historically, the Geneva department has focused its research and extension programs on fruits and vegetables while the Ithaca department emphasized undergraduate teaching, and research and extension programs focused on dairy science, food safety, and fundamental aspects of food science. The new department combines the strengths of the previous two departments into a unified whole with an enhanced capacity to serve our students and the food industry.
