Food Science
Food science deals with the transformation of raw agricultural goods into food products acceptable for human consumption. This field of applied science involves studying diverse scientific disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, toxicology and management as they relate to food, and effectively applying the industrial and practical aspects to product development, food processing, preservation and marketing.
The Faculty and Facilities
Food science is a four-year curriculum offered by the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources through the Department of Cereal and Food Sciences. The program draws on the expertise of faculty in several departments at North Dakota State University. These faculty have expertise in both teaching and research. Many have industry experience with numerous connections in the food industry.
The Industrial Agriculture and Communications Center (IACC) and Harris Hall at NDSU house laboratories and teaching facilities where many of the food science courses are taught. Extensive facilities are available for teaching and food processing research.

Hours:
Mon - Fri: 8am to 5pm Wed: 8am to 7pm Major Resource Kit Food Science Food Science employs scientific principles in the design of new food products and explores ways to process, package and preserve the thousands of food items we consume to ensure their safety and quality. In the Food Science major, students initially obtain a broad background in the sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics) as a basis for in-depth studies of the food science disciplines of food chemistry, food processing, food microbiology, and food product development. Electives provide the opportunity for course work in the areas such as business, material science or molecular biology and allow students to obtain specialized knowledge in other fields important to Food Science. Upon graduation, job opportunities include positions within the food and allied industries, government and independent research institutions. The role of food scientist in such positions may involve product and process development, food safety, engineering, quality control and analysis, technical service and sales, with opportunities in regulatory agencies, education, and basic research. We encourage all students to participate in job-search workshops and career days, to seek internships, to develop communication skills, and to learn to network with prospective employers.

What is Food Science?
Food science is a multidisciplinary field that applies disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, engineering and nutrition to develop new food products and design new processes to improve the safety and quality of foods. Food scientists use cutting-edge technology to develop new foods, add value to raw food commodities and improve the quality and safety of existing food products. Food science is the science of food. Consider exploring food science through our introductory courses: What's for dinner? (FSC 120) and Principles of Food Science (FSC 211).
What is the Food Industry?
The food industry is the world's largest industry. This multi-billion dollar industry employs many thousands of food scientists. Graduates are employed by food and related industries, federal and state governments, and universities to work at the interface between the production and delivery of food. There are more positions available for food scientists than graduates to fill them. Food science is everywhere on the grocery shelves.
