The biggest pebble here is 40 mm long (1.6 inches). A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone , or jewel ) is a piece of mineral , which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks , (such as lapis lazuli ) and organic materials (such as amber or jet ) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. As colorful as the rainbow and as sparkling as fine leaded crystal, gemstones have captured the imaginations and desires of men and perhaps especially, women, for ages. The pursuit of gems have become the subject of legends, fairy tales, epics, and major motion pictures (" Romancing the Stone ", for one). Today, more fine gemstone specimens are available to the average person than at any time in history.
What makes a gemstone?
Generally speaking, a gemstone is a stone that is beautiful, rare, and durable (resistant to abrasion, fracturing and chemical reactions). Fluorite is extremely colorful and pretty but has a hardness of only 4 on the Moh's hardness scale and has four perfect cleavage directions, which makes it only an oddity as a cut gem. Others are too common and are given a semi-precious status (such as agate ). Most gemstones have good hardness (above 5) and a high

West Texas Agate By Paul Graybeal West Texas is famous for its wide variety of unique and beautiful agates and jaspers. Some types are highly prized by collectors world wide. 35 million years ago, volcanic activity in the Big Bend produced the environment for our beautiful gemstones. Quartz crystallizing as nodules inside gas pockets, or in cracks to form vein type agate, delicate plumes, bands, moss or bouquet patterns of different colors are actually crystals of impurities such as iron oxide, other oxides, hematite, etc. Agate and chalcedony is widespread throughout this region, but only a small amount is of lapidary interest. Agate has been found south of Sierra Blanca, all the way down the Rio Grande, past Del Rio. I would expect many unique varieties to be found throughout the Big Bend region in isolated pockets, as well as all the agate that was carried down
