Gene Therapy

One of the most amazing genetic applications in medicine is gene therapy. Also known as somatic gene therapy and therapeutic gene therapy, this procedure involves inserting (or sometimes deleting) portions of the genes in diseased patients so that they can be cured and live healthier lives.
Thermal cyclers (amplify DNA via PCR)
Preparing amplified DNA for purification
A fluorescent automated DNA sequencer
There are other gene therapy techniques, although they aren’t as frequently used. One method involves inserting therapeutic DNA into cultured endothelium tissue (endothelium is the membrane that lines all of the blood vessels) and then grafting it into the patient. Another technique requires the patient to receive an electric shock while submerged in a bath of a therapeutic DNA solution. The shock opens the skin pores, allowing the DNA to enter. Still other options include skin grafts, connective tissue grafts, and injecting the liver with the therapeutic DNA.

Gene Therapy: Ethical Issues
Home Library Health Genetics Encyclopedia Gene therapy introduces or alters genetic material to compensate for a genetic mistake that causes disease. It is hoped that gene therapy can treat or cure diseases for which no other effective treatments are available. However, many unique technical and ethical considerations have been raised by this new form of treatment, and several levels of regulatory committees have been established to review each gene therapy clinical trial prior to its initiation in human subjects. Ethical considerations include deciding which cells should be used, how gene therapy can be safely tested and evaluated in humans, what components are necessary for informed consent, and which diseases and/or traits are eligible for gene therapy research. Germ Line Versus Somatic Cell Gene Therapy Virtually all cells in the human body contain genes, making them potential targets for gene therapy. However, these cells can be divided into two major categories:

Welcome to the Institute of Gene Therapy at the Hadassah Medical Center Preamble Gene therapy is a fascinating and growing research field of translational medicine. The basic biological understanding of tissue function, cellular events, metabolic processes, stem cell function, are all linked to the genetic code and to the genetic material in all species. In mammalians as in more simple creatures, each and every phenotype structural characterizations, function and probably behavior is dependent on the special nature and timing of genetic material and events. In altering the genetic material of somatic cells, gene therapy may correct the underlying specific disease pathophysiology. In some instances, it may offer the potential of a one-time cure for devastating, inherited disorders. In principle, gene therapy should be applicable to many diseases for which current therapeutic approaches are ineffective or where the prospects for effective treatment appear exceedingly low. Our desire for deep understanding of human nature will encourage us to develop new therapeutic platforms in the years to come.
