Organic Geochemistry group
Group leader: Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs The Organic Geochemistry group is utilizing the information encoded in specific organic molecules (molecular biomarkers) to study geoscientific problems in various disciplines ranging from biogeochemistry and geobiology to microbiology. The overarching objective of our research is to further our understanding of the interactions between biosphere and environment, both at present and in the past. The problems studied require an interdisciplinary approach. This is reflected in the composition of the research group, consisting of closely collaborating biologists, chemists, and geologists.

One of 26 National Science Foundation funded long-term study sites, the MCM-LTER was established in 1992. However, research in these valleys has been conducted for many years starting in 1904, the early days of Antarctic exploration. Today's research is an interdiciplinary study of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems including soils scientists, glaciologists, hydrologists, limnologists, and geochemists. For more information please see the MCM-LTER web site.

The Earth's surface environment consists of a heterogeneous mixture of mineral oxides and organic macromolecules, which interact with each other and the atmosphere, water, and biota continuously. A major goal in environmental geochemistry is to gain a better understanding of interactions between these components in nature, and to apply that knowledge to predict a variety of biogeochemical processes, such as elemental cycling, biological chemistry of elements, and the fate and transport of contaminants. Our research group focuses on understanding these interactions, specifically on their fundamental aspects, such as the structure of water, and solvation/complex formation in aqueous solutions and at natural interfaces. The MSc Environmental Geochemistry course offers a geochemical focus, with additional opportunities to study managerial, legal and engineering aspects. These courses have a combined intake of 10 to 15 students each year.
    Entry requirements
Applications are welcome from graduates with a first or upper second class degree or the overseas equivalent in geological, geographical, earth, environmental, and/or chemical sciences, and provided they have chemistry to A level standard. The course has NERC Advanced-course studentships available for UK students (or EU students with 3 or more years UK residency). Eligible applicants who wish to be considered for NERC studentships need to apply for the course by 31st March 2010.

    A Leader in Geochemistry!
    OVERVIEW
    EXPLORATION GEOCHEMISTRY
Petroleum exploration surface geochemical surveys can be used to map the light hydrocarbons expressed through microseeps from active petroleum and natural gas reservoirs at depth. The maps, developed from the survey, serve as a guide to identifying prospective areas in both frontier and mature basins. The light hydrocarbons, when surveyed, analyzed and mapped, using ETI's proven techniques and technology, produce a graphic, geochemical picture of the source rock below. This picture shows whether or not a given area contains petroleum source rocks; whether the area is more oil or gas prone; and finally, whether or not the gas is over cooked and non-productive, or the oil too heavy to produce by drilling alone. Such studies can greatly reduce the area to be searched; helping to focus more expensive exploration techniques, such as 3D geophysical surveys, on those portions of the basin most likely to contain petroleum accumulations and potential reservoirs.
