Les tsunamis
Avant le tsunami du 26 décembre 2004 dans l'Ocean Indien, l'observation des tsunamis par les satellites altimétriques était relativement insignifiante. Des études portant sur des phénomènes passés [Okal et al.,1999], montrèrent que TOPEX avait été le seul altimètre capable de détecter un tsunami généré par un tremblement de terre au Nicaragua, en 1992. Le signal n'avait pas été clairement observé, en raison de sa faible amplitude (de l'ordre de 8 cm), comparée à l'importance de la variabilité océanique dans cette région. En raison de l'importante vitesse de propagation des tsunamis (environ 800 km/h à 5000 m de profondeur), et le fait que le satellite doit survoler les vagues presque immédiatement après leur déclenchement, la probabilité qu'un satellite altimétrique observe un tsunami est faible. Traces au sol des satellites Jason -1 (en haut à gauche) et d'Envisat (en bas à gauche) superposées à la simulation de propagation de la vague au moment du passage du satellite (simulation du CEA).
