This towering mass of water and ice shook the ground as it thundered towards the Pacific Ocean, stripping away soils and cutting deep canyons in the bedrock. With flood waters roaring across the landscape at 65 miles per hour, the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours. The study of geology is an expression of our curiosity of the world around us
If you have ever questioned why landscapes differ, why earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur, why the mountains and oceans exist, or why the dinosaurs became extinct, then you have already been introduced to geology. Geologists attempt to answer the questions of "why?" "how?" and "under what conditions?", as well as questions concerning time ("when?") and place ("where?"). The process of finding the answers to these questions is complex and fascinating; it is what geology is all about!

Submitted by Tim Scott on Fri, 10/29/2010 - 13:09 Join members of the West Chester University community for an exciting day hiking the most famous hiking trail in North America ! We will be hiking to Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle, located on the Appalachian Trail near Hamburg PA. (Call 610-256-7462 for details)
(Taken at Pulpit Rock, Hamburg, PA; 2009) We want to encourage your involvement in the outdoors and want to provide a unique opportunity to sample a section of the famous Appalachian Trail which runs over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. This is not a course mandated trip but rather a trip with staff members hiking and sharing this experience with you and your friends. Starting at the Hamburg Reservoir, the hike ascends, via the Appalachian Trail , to Pulpit Rock. The hike will share a range of learning experiences. Birds of prey use these ridges for their fall migration. Hikers gain a sense for the impressive geology and wonders of the woods. The view from the Pinnacle is amazing! The return trail descends into a beautiful forest of hemlock, mountain laurel, and rhododendron with a tiny stream which contains small trout. This section is beautiful and well worth the effort.

  • Define geology. Discuss how geologists learn about rock formations. In geology, explain why the study of the present is important to understanding the past. Pick three resources that can be extracted or mined from Earth for commercial use. Discuss with your counselor how each product is discovered and processed. Review a geologic map of your area or an area selected by your counselor, and discuss the different rock types and estimated ages of rocks represented. Determine whether the rocks are horizontal, folded, or faulted, and explain how you arrived at your conclusion. Do ONE of the following:
    a. With your parent's and counselor's approval, visit with a geologist, land use planner, or civil engineer. Discuss this professional's work and the tools required in this line of work. Learn about a project that this person is now working on, and ask to see reports and maps created for this project. Discuss with your counselor what you have learned.

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (December 2006) Historical geology is the use of the principles of geology to reconstruct and understand the history of the Earth . It focuses on geologic processes that change the Earth 's surface and subsurface; and the use of stratigraphy structural geology and paleontology to tell the sequence of these events. It also focuses on the evolution of plants and animals during different time periods in the geological timescale . The discovery of radioactivity and the development of a variety of radiometric dating techniques in the first half of the 20th century provided a means of deriving absolute versus relative ages of geologic history. Economic geology , the search for and extraction of energy and raw materials , is heavily dependent on an understanding of the geological history of an area. Environmental geology , including most importantly the geologic hazards of earthquakes and volcanism , must also include a detailed knowledge of geologic history.
