Geology
From LoveToKnow 1911
GEOLOGY (from Gr. rye the earth, and science), the science which investigates the physical history of the earth. Its object is to trace the structural progress of our planet from the earliest beginnings of its separate existence, through its various stages of growth, down to the present condition of things. It seeks to determine the manner in which the evolution of the earth's great surface features has been effected. It unravels the complicated processes by which each continent has been built up. It follows, even into detail, the varied sculpture of mountain and valley, crag and ravine . Nor does it confine itself merely to changes in the inorganic world. Geology shows that the present races of plants and animals are the descendants of other and very different races which once peopled the earth. It teaches that there has been a progressive development of the inhabitants, as well as one of the globe on which they have dwelt; that each successive period in the earth's history, since the introduction of living things, has been marked by characteristic types of the animal and vegetable kingdoms; and that, however imperfectly the remains of these organisms have been preserved or may be deciphered, materials exist for a history of life upon the planet. The geographical distribution of existing faunas and floras is often made clear and intelligible by geological evidence; and in the same way light is thrown upon some of the remoter phases in the history of man himself. A subject so comprehensive as this must require a wide and varied basis of evidence. It is one of the characteristics of geology to gather evidence from sources which at first sight seem far removed from its scope, and to seek aid from almost every other leading branch of science. Thus, in dealing with the earliest conditions of the planet, the geologist must fully avail himself of the labours of the astronomer. Whatever is ascertainable by

    Geology
UHH Home Academics College of Arts and Sciences Geology is the study of the earth: its form and composition, the changes it has undergone and the dynamic forces shaping it today. Geologists are interested in what makes volcanoes erupt, what forces produce mountain ranges, where earthquakes occur and how they can be predicted, how glaciers carve out the landscape, and where petroleum and minerals can be located. Both laboratory and field activities are important components of the program, and students can expect to develop their descriptive, analytical and interpretive skills. Students are advised that field trips are sometimes conducted outside of class hours.

Geology
Author Information
Submit a manuscript Contributions to Geology should be innovative, provocative (or describe a significant advance in the field), of timely significance, and of broad interest, either within a discipline and/or across disciplines. Submissions in all disciplines of the earth and planetary sciences are welcomed, but papers should not be overly geared toward a specialist audience. Content should reflect new discoveries or approaches, and should not overlap with publications presented elsewhere by the authors. All submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter (see below) that clearly explains how the contribution meets these criteria. Papers must effectively convey their significance and content within the short format required by the journal. Articles should not exceed four printed pages including title, authors, affiliations, abstract, text, references, tables, captions, footnotes, and illustrations (at readable size). One Geology page equals approximately 1250 words, or 7500 characters (with spaces between words). Supplementary files should be restricted to data tables and related graphs, and short captions. Supplemental information must not be used to provide additional text that is required to convey the message of the article.

Geology
Geology is the science and study of the solid matter of a celestial body, its composition, structure, physical properties, history and the processes that shape it. It is one of the Earth sciences. Geologists have helped establish the age of the Earth at about 4.6 billion (4.6x109) years, and have determined that the Earth's lithosphere, which includes the crust, is fragmented into tectonic plates that move over a rheic upper mantle (asthenosphere) via processes that are collectively referred to as plate tectonics. Geologists help locate and manage the earth's natural resources, such as petroleum and coal, as well as metals such as iron, copper, and uranium. Additional economic interests include gemstones and many minerals such as asbestos, perlite, mica, phosphates, zeolites, clay, pumice, quartz, and silica, as well as elements such as sulphur, chlorine, and helium. Astrogeology refers to the application of geologic principles to other bodies of the solar system. However, specialised terms such as selenology (studies of the Moon), areology (of Mars), etc., are also in use. The word "geology" was first used by Jean-André Deluc in the year 1778 and introduced as a fixed term by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure in the year 1779. An older meaning of the word was first used by Richard de Bury. He used it to distinguish between earthly and theological jurisprudence.
