edit Overview
Geomatics is fairly new. The term was apparently coined by B. Dubuisson in the year 1969 from the combination of geodesy and geoinformatics terms. It includes the tools and techniques used in land surveying remote sensing cartography Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, COMPASS), photogrammetry, and related forms of earth mapping. Originally used in Canada , because it is similar in French and English, the term geomatics has been adopted by the International Organization for Standardization , the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors , and many other international authorities, although some (especially in the United States) have shown a preference for the term geospatial technology A good definition can be found on the University of Calgary 's web page titled "What is Geomatic Engineering?"

Data is gathered using tools such as satellites, air and sea borne sensors, and ground based instruments. Data are then manipulated and analyzed using advanced computer systems. Geomatics students learn how the Earth is measured, how the Earth-based data is analyzed and how this data is integrated into forms and systems that people can use. Students gain hands-on experience working with field equipment and in high tech classrooms. The Geomatics major at UF is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ( ABET ) and is the only program of its kind in the state.

Welcome to the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Engineering website. The site is designed to provide you with information about our school and get you on the pathway to success. We aim for excellence in all that we do.
In our school we focus our efforts on the personal and professional development of each student. We want you to be successful. No person is ever successful alone. There needs to be a leader but we share every triumph with those that help in the effort along the way. Your ability to work well as a part of a problem solving team will be an important component of your success in school and in your professional life. Learning in our school is about learning to work well in teams. Our award winning faculty and staff will provide you with opportunities to work with them on exciting research projects that will stretch your skills and imagination. Ongoing projects include work with coastal erosion, earthquake engineering, biomechanics involving the fatigue life of titanium spinal implants, GIS traffic flow analysis, and work related to a better understanding of the links between motivation and action. Besides earning some money to help pay your college bills, these opportunities will help you to grow personally and professionally.
At the close of each semester our students compete in a design competition organized by the faculty. At the competition, student/faculty teams compete for tuition waivers and cash prizes. Victorious teams have designed Rube Goldberg machines, computer games, a machine that climbs stairs, a trebuchet, concrete that used recycled rubber as an admixture, and other cool projects. These competitions are designed to be fun and you will learn a great deal by participating.

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (December 2009) Geomatics Engineering or Geomatic Engineering is a rapidly developing discipline that focuses on spatial information (i.e. information that has a location). The location is the primary factor used to integrate a very wide range of data for viewing and analysis. Geomatics engineers apply engineering principles to spatial information and implement relational data structures involving measurement sciences, thus using geomatics and acting as spatial information engineers. Geomatics engineers manage local, regional, national and global spatial data infrastructures. Geomatics is a new term incorporating the older field of land surveying along with many other aspects of spatial data management. Following the advanced developments in digital data processing, the nature of the tasks required of the professional land surveyor has evolved and the term "surveying" no longer accurately covers the whole range of tasks that the profession deals with. As our societies become more complex, information with a spatial position associated with it becomes more critical to decision-making, both from a personal and a business perspective, and also from a community and a large-scale governmental viewpoint. Therefore, the geomatics engineer can be involved in an extremely wide variety of information gathering activities and applications. Geomatics engineers design, develop, and operate systems for collecting and analyzing spatial information about the land, the oceans, natural resources, and manmade features. Geomatics engineering applications include integrating science and technology from both new and traditional disciplines:
