    Book on Moduli of Surfaces - ongoing project
    I am writing a book on the moduli of varieties of general type, more generally about the moduli of pairs (X,D) such that K_X+D is ample. I will try to keep posting the chapters as they get written. As usual, in writing a chapter one discovers that the earlier ones should be changed, so I will try to update them as well. Others agreed to contribute various sections, these will be added as they become available. Since these are not final notes, citations, references, proofs or even entire sections may be missing. Any comments, corrections or suggestions are welcome.
  • Chapter 1: Introduction
  • This is mostly a review of moduli theory, with lots of examples of what can go wrong for varieties that are not canonically polarized, or too singular, or ...
  • Chapter 2: Canonical models
  • This is mostly a review of the theory of canonical models, with special attention to the various important classes of singularities. (For example, canonical, klt, dlt, rational, log canonical, Du Bois, ...)

    67. Standards For School Mathematics: Geometry
    On this site you will find the electronic Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. NCTM's visionary document for teaching mathematics at any level.
    http://standards.nctm.org/document/chapter3/geom.htm

    Geometry
    Instructional programs from prekindergarten through grade 12 should enable all students to
    • analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships;
    • specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems;
    • apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations;
    • use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems.
    Geometry and spatial sense are fundamental components of mathematics learning. They offer ways to interpret and reflect on our physical environment and can serve as tools for the study of other topics in mathematics and science. Geometry is a natural area of mathematics for the development of students' reasoning and justification skills that build across the grades. As the study of the relationships among shapes and their properties becomes more abstract, students should come to understand the role of definitions and theorems and be able to construct their own proofs. For example, students in high school should be able to prove that the area of a triangle formed by vertices that bisect the sides of a larger triangle equals one-fourth of the area of the larger triangle. Principles and Standards calls for geometry to be learned using concrete models, drawings, and dynamic software. With appropriate activities and tools and with teacher support, students can make and explore conjectures about geometry and reason carefully about geometric ideas.

    Welcome to the Geometry portion of the site! On this and the following pages, we'll try to clear up some of the common problems people have with geometry (which seems to stump just about everyone who's ever taken it). Everything from parallel lines to volumes of prisms and a couple of word problems are covered. After each section, there is an optional (though highly recommended) quiz that you can take to see if you've fully mastered the concepts. http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/geometry/
    Geometry is the mathematics of shape and space. It's about the properties of objects (their angles and surfaces, for instance) and the consequences of how these objects are positioned (where their shadows fall, how people must move around them). Here's a chance to put those memories to rest, to experience geometry anew. At its roots, geometry is not abstract. Rather, it's fun and colorful, instructive and practical. Geometry is about real things: how big they are, whether they fit, how to find them, what they look like in a mirror. Geometry is naturally concrete. This lab divides activities into two broad categories. Activities about shape center on identifying properties of various shapes and measuring their dimensions. Activities about space Simply put, geometry is important to real life. Before you start the activities, read this background to find out why.

    What is surf
    surf is a tool to visualize some real algebraic geometry: plane algebraic curves, algebraic surfaces and hyperplane sections of surfaces. surf is script driven and has (optionally) a nifty GUI using the Gtk widget set. The algorithms should be stable enough not to be confused by curve/surface singularities in codimension greater than one and the degree of the surface or curve. This has been achieved quite a bit. We have drawn curves of degree up to 30 and surfaces of degree up to 20 successfully. However, there are examples of curves/surfaces of lower degree where surf fails to produce perfect images. This happens especially if the equation of the curve/surface is not reduced. Best results are achieved using reduced equations. On the other hand, surf displays the Fermat-curves accurately for degree up to 98. surf is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Go here to download surf or visit the SourceForge project page
