    7th International Conference on Geomorphology
    6 - 11 July 2009
You may have seen this Conference advertised for the 7 - 12 July, the dates have changed to the 6 - 11 July 2009
    Welcome
While the conference is being held in Melbourne, Australia, your host here is the Australian and New Zealand Geomorphology Group, an international collaboration that is unique in the IAG. In this conference you will have the opportunity to learn about the geomorphology of both Australia and New Zealand. While these two countries are physically and socially close, they display contrasting geomorphological conditions. While you are here we hope you will take the opportunity to visit across the Tasman as well. We have a large program of scientific papers, both oral and poster, in 37 theme sessions. While most of these themes are familiar to you from previous Geomorphology conferences, there are some, such as the Geomorphology of Armed Conflict and Terrestrial Laser Scanning, that are new to the program. The working groups of the IAG are reporting their work over the past 4 years in the sessions of this conference. Melbourne is an exciting cosmopolitan city and no matter where you come from, you will find someone from your country already here and serving the food and drinks of your homelands. Enjoy!

For full treatment, see geology: Geomorphology Much geomorphologic research has been devoted to the origin of landforms . Such studies focus on the forces that mold and alter the primary relief elements of the terrestrial surface. These forces include tectonic activity and surficial earth movements (e.g., landslides and rockfalls). They also involve weathering and the erosion and deposition of the resulting rock debris by wind, glacial ice, and streams. In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the effects of human action on the physical environment as well. Many systems of classifying landforms have been devised since the late 19th century. Some systems describe and group topographic features primarily according to the processes that shaped or modified them. Others take additional factors into consideration (e.g., character of the surface rocks and

More recent geologic features - sand dunes, rivers, soils, lake basins, and alluvial fans, to name a few - are in most cases still undergoing formational processes. The response of these features to recent changes in climate and land use makes geomorphology an important tool for understanding our changing global climate and the effects of our increasingly intensive use of the landscape.

Lublin, Poland Organized by the Institute of Earth Sciences, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, the Association of Polish Geomorphologists and the Polish Geographical Society Registration is now open for the 5th International Symposium on Gully Erosion Formation and development of gullies is one of the most important geomorphological processes influencing the landscapes of agricultural areas all over the world. Human impact plays major role in gully erosion. This phenomenon causes several important on-site and offsite consequences at the same time. Good recognition of factors influencing the intensity gully erosion constitutes not only a scientific problem but also an applicative one - in many regions it could be treated as a basis for sustainable development of agricultural areas. That is why the number of the scientific meetings related to the problem increases.

Today’s 200 members come from a wide range of disciplines, from universities, administration and also from private companies. The SGS is a member society of the Swiss Academy of Science (SCNAT), of the Swiss Association of Geographers (ASG), and of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).
Goals The Swiss Geomorphological Society invigorates geomorphology in science and practice, through the support of young scientists at universities, and by fostering relationships with associated scientific fields and the public services.
Geomorphology Geomorphologists study processes, forms, materials and evolution of landscapes at Earth's surface. In the context of global change, geomorphologists develop and promote the understanding of natural processes in geosystems and the relationships between societies and nature.

      geomorphology
geomorphology, study of the origin and evolution of the earth's landforms, both on the continents and within the ocean basins. It is concerned with the internal geologic processes of the earth's crust, such as tectonic activity and volcanism that constructs new landforms, as well as externally driven forces of wind, water, waves, and glacial ice that modify such landforms. Geomorphology developed from the works of James Hutton and James Playfair in the 18th cent.; G. K. Gilbert described landform evolution; William Morris Davis developed the geomorphic cycle, set forth in his Geographic Essays (1909). By the 1970s, geomorphology had grown to include the environmental problems involved in landform processes, including subsidence landslides , and coastal processes (see coast protection ), which all affect humans who live in certain susceptible regions. Satellite images and data help geomorphologists to describe and map landforms and observe rapid or slow changes on the earth's surface. Development of mathematical models of landform processes have influenced the direction of modern geomorphic research. Geomorphology principles also have been applied to the study of landform development of other planets and moons of the solar system, based on images sent back to earth by flyby and orbiting satellites.
