30 years of Glaciology at VAW During the planning stage of large hydraulic dams in the Swiss Alps in the 1950s and '60s, several glacier-related issues had to be considered. This was clearly demonstrated by the Allalingletscher ice avalanche in 1965, which destroyed the construction site of the Mattmark hydraulic dam and claimed 88 victims. It was during this period when glaciological investigations became an important aspect of the work at the former Hydrology Section of VAW/ETH Zurich. Glaciology at VAW gained international recognition in 1973 due to the new theory on water flow in intra- and sub-glacial channels put forth by Hans Röthlisberger. As a direct result of the increasing importance of glaciological issues, the Glaciology Section of VAW (VAW/Glaciology) was founded in 1979.  VAW/Glaciology has ever since pursued the following activities
Basic Research
The strength of the Glaciology division of VAW has always been the investigation of processes in physical glaciology. Field studies with the best available methods are carried out under often challenging conditions. The results are analysed and interpreted with theoretical and numerical models.

Glaciology (from Middle French dialect (Franco-Provençal): glace , "ice"; or Latin: glacies , "frost, ice"; and Greek: λόγος, logos , "speech" lit. "to talk about ice") is the study of glacier s, or more generally ice and natural phenomena that involve ice. Glaciology is an interdisciplinary earth science that integrates geophysics geology physical geography geomorphology ... biology , and ecology . The impact of glaciers on humans adds the fields of human geography and anthropology . The presence of ice on Mars and Europa brings in an extraterrestrial component to the field.

Areas of study within glaciology include glacial history and the reconstruction of past glaciation. A glaciologist is a person who studies glaciers. Glaciology is one of the key areas of polar research.

    Glaciology - Definition
Glaciology is the study of glaciers , or more generally the study of ice and natural phenomena that involve ice. It is an interdisciplinary earth science that integrates geology climatology meteorology hydrology ... biology , and ecology . The presence of ice on Mars and Europa brings in an extraterrestrial component to the field. Areas of study within glaciology include glacial history and the reconstruction of past glaciation patterns, effects of glaciers on climate and vice versa, the dynamics of ice movement, the contributions of glaciers to erosion, lifeforms that live in the ice, and so forth. Unsurprisingly, glaciology is one of the key areas supported by polar research. There are two general categories of glaciation which glaciologists distinguish: alpine glaciation , accumulations or "rivers of ice" confined to valleys; and continental glaciation , unrestricted accumulations which once covered much of the northern continents. The word glacier is derived from the Latin glacies , meaning ice or frost.

      Centre for Glaciology
Since its foundation in 1994 as a formal research unit within Aberystwyth University, the Centre for Glaciology has become one of the leading British research groups concerned with the study of glaciers and their sedimentary products. The Centre aims to identify and measure cryospheric processes and evaluate their role in past, present and future global environmental change. The emphasis on field research in process glaciology is intended to provide realistic constraints on the development of numerical models, and to underpin the interpretation of past glacial records. Our core research themes are glacier dynamics, palaeoglaciology and applied glaciology. Facilities include a Cryoflux system and dedicated laboratory, drilling equipment and a remote sensing/modelling facility.

Ice Cores Ice Cores, Long Term Climate, Atmospheric Chemistry, Stable Isotopes, Pollen, Biological and Other Records from the Canadian Arctic and Yukon. NRCan, GSC, TSD, National Glaciology Program David Fisher, Roy (Fritz) Koerner, Mike Demuth, Jocelyne Bourgeois, Chris Zdanowicz, James Zheng, John Sekerka, Murty Parnandi The glaciology groups' ice core program dates back to the 1970s. It will continue to provide information about the history of the above mentioned variables on time resolutions of seasonal to millennial and cover the last glacial/interglacial cycle from sites all over the Arctic and the Yukon. The ice core studies add a time dimension to the regional monitoring programmes also done by the group and place the modern trends in context. The multi-proxy, multi-variable approach of ice cores allows the cause and effect relationships to be established and provides, along with the records from tree rings and other climate sensitive stratigraphies, a way of reconstructing the history of the earth's climate in great detail over the last few thousand years.

The moraine is the high bank of debris on the left side of the image. Glaciology is the study of natural forms of ice, particularly glaciers , and phenomena related to ice. It includes the study of how glaciers are formed and depleted, how they move, and how they affect the physical landscape, the climate, and living organisms . It is one of the key areas of polar research. It also involves research into glacial history and the reconstruction of past glaciation, thus providing insights into the ice ages . The apparent presence of ice on Mars and Jupiter 's moon Europa brings in an extraterrestrial component to the field. Thus, glaciology is an interdisciplinary earth science, integrating geophysics, geology , physical geography, geomorphology, climatology, meteorology, hydrology biology , and ecology . The impact of glaciers on humans adds the fields of human geography and anthropology . A person who studies glaciers is called a glaciologist.
