Glaciology is the study of Glacier s, or more generally the study of Ice and natural phenomena that involve ice. The word ''glacier'' is derived from the Latin ''glacies'', meaning ice or frost.
Glaciology is an interdisciplinary Earth Science that integrates Geophysics Geology Geomorphology Climatology ... Biology , and Ecology . The impact of glaciers on humans adds the fields of Geography and Anthropology . The presence of ice on Mars and Europa brings in an extraterrestrial component to the field.
OVERVIEW
Areas of study within glaciology include glacial history and the reconstruction of past glaciation patterns, effects of glaciers on climate and vice versa, the dynamics of ice movement, the contributions of glaciers to erosion and geomorphology, lifeforms that live in the ice, and so forth.
Not surprisingly, glaciology is one of the key areas supported by polar research.

Glaciers extended well down the mountain forming moraine ridges, clearly visible now on the southern flanks down to about 4000m. At present only a small fraction of the glacial cover remains. The remnants of the ice cap can be seen as the spectacular ice cliffs of the Northern and Eastern Icefields, and the longest glaciers are found on the precipitous southern and south-western flanks. If the present rate of glacial recession continues the majority of the glaciers on Kilimanjaro could vanish altogether in the next 50 years. A recent study carried out on the snows of Xixibangma and Kilimanjaro has reinforced observations. It is now estimated that Kilimanjaro has lost 85% of its ice cover (by mass) since 1912.

Welcome to The Crevasse Zone
Every summer since 1946, scientists and students with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) have lived on and studied the Juneau Icefield in southeast Alaska. One of the main projects conducted by the program is measuring and monitoring glacier velocities and surface elevation changes using high-precision GPS. The purpose of this site is to present the data and results of these GPS surveys. Why the name Crevasse Zone?
Simple. Crevasses are the number one hazard encountered by those of us who live and work on glaciers. All our survey work is done with GPS, often in total whiteout or limited visibility conditions. And since crevasses and the danger they present are constantly on our minds when we're on the Icefield, and because I needed a catchy name for this web site, I couldn't think of a more appropriate name than The Crevasse Zone. A bit about myself...

Studying Subglacial Lakes, Ice Sheet Dynamics and Tectonics in Antarctica with Aerogeophysics The polar regions play a critical role in Earth's climatic and geodynamic systems. Although located far from the main centers of human civilization, the polar atmosphere and oceans have strong global connections and therefore directly affect climate, landscape evolution, the global biosphere and human society. Over geologic time scales, Antarctic geodynamic processes are a major influence on ice sheet dynamics and global environmental change, which affects current and long-term, large-scale sea-level change. My research at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University links solid Earth geophysics and glaciology, providing unique research opportunities. I use integrated sets of aerogeophysical data, including gravity, magnetics, ice-penetrating radar, and laser altimeter measurements, to study physical processes linking tectonics, ice sheet dynamics and life in extreme environments, such as subglacial lakes. Ice and Climate
The research concentrates on the dynamics of natural ice masses and their interaction with the climatic system. Emphasis is laid on 3-D modelling of the continental cryosphere ( Antarctica, Greenland and the Quaternary ice sheets ), the regional ice dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet (higher-order modeling and inverse modeling, supported by field work and remote sensing) and mountain glacier research (Alps, Himalaya, radar sounding, mass balance, GPS measurements, and modeling).
Current research projects
  • ASTER (Assessment of modelling uncertainties in long-term climate and sea level change projections): incorporating Antarctic and Greenland ice-sheet models in LOVECLIM, the Belgian Community Earth System Model to conduct experiments on the evolution of climate during the Holocene and the third millennium.

Tour of Park Geology - Glaciers and Glacial Landforms
Glaciers are important as indicators of climatic change, as objects of beauty, and as sources of water and recreation. Because glaciers store snow and ice during cold seasons and release it as water during hot, dry weather, they are natural and effective regulators of their water supply. Glaciers have covered almost a third of the world's land throughout time. Evidence of past and present glaciation can be found across our national parks. Explore the parks that exhibit glaciers and glacial landforms by clicking on the links on this page.
