Global Environmental Change and Biodiversity A Workshop in Paris 1-4 May, 2005, Dourdan, France Background: Population declines and extinctions of plant and animal species due to human activities have been primarily caused by habitat destruction and degradation, overexploitation, and invasive species. Most conservation strategies have been designed to limit the negative effects of these human impacts on biodiversity. In the future, global environmental change - increasing temperature, changes in precipitation patterns, increasing atmospheric CO It is essential that we develop a sound scientific understanding of how global environmental change will modify biodiversity so that decision makers can be appropriately alerted to the possible effects of global change on biodiversity, conservation strategies can be adapted to account for environmental change, and assessments can be made of the potential effects of changes in biodiversity on ecosystem services. Bioclimatic models - which are based on climate projections and climatic constraints on species estimated from current spatial distributions - suggest that projected changes in temperature and precipitation will lead to a continuation of these range shifts in the future with negative effects on biodiversity at regional and global scales (e.g., Bakkenes et al. 2002, Midgley et al. 2002, Thomas et al. 2004) and on the health of humans and agriculturally important plants and animals (e.g., Sutherst 2001, 2004). Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMS) - which simulate the response of vegetation to atmospheric and climatic change at global scales - suggest that distributions of major species groups and biomes are also likely to shift towards the poles and higher altitudes (e.g., Cramer et al.

Climate change and human health
Climate change is a significant and emerging threat to public health, and changes the way we must look at protecting vulnerable populations. WHO has an active and long-standing programme on protecting health from climate change, guided by a World Health Assembly resolution. Through its country, regional and headquarters offices, WHO provides evidence and supports capacity building and implementation projects to strengthen the health system response to climate change, and to ensure that health is appropriately considered in decisions made by other sectors, such as energy and transport. Welcome to ACT!!
ACT is an interdisciplinary training and research center on the human dimensions of global environment change.
The current environmental crisis has made us aware of the need to "think globally, act locally" - yet this dictum is rarely carried out in research and training. The globalization of the environment crisis bears the risk of the research and training at Universities being purely global in nature. This would fail to take into account the highly variable local causes of human activities or to discover sustainable solutions to the use, conservation, and restoration of human ecosystems.
ACT's research and training objectives focus on how particular local populations manage resources and how those activities may be monitored using remote sensing technologies and field studies.

        Overview
The objectives of this course are to gain a basic understanding of the interrelationships among the earth's major physical and biological systems and to gain an appreciation of past and potential future global environmental changes. The role of humans in propagating and mitigating global change will also be examined. We will discuss changes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere, and the impacts of human actions. Aspects of the forecasted global warming as well as other important issues will be discussed. This is an introductory physical geography course and is required for all Geography majors. This course also serves as a physical science (PS) course for GenEd requirements. The emphasis of this course is on the physical relationships between earth system components, not on public policy or political issues.

Welcome!
We are an international climate research center, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. We seek to understand the climate system and how it may respond to human activity by conducting experiments with computer simulation models and by analyzing the many direct and remote observations related to climate. Our mission is to provide an international research environment dedicated to improving mankinds understanding of the nature and predictability of climate variations and change in the Asia-Pacific region, and to developing innovative ways to utilize knowledge gained for the benefit of society. Our Asia-Pacific Data-Research Center (APDRC) provides easy access to a wide variety of climate data and products and conducts research to improve data products.

GECHS
Global Environmental Change and Human Security GECHS is a core project of the International Human Dimensions Programme . We situate environmental changes within the larger socioeconomic and political contexts that cause them, and which shape the capacity of communities to cope with and respond to change. Our research focuses on the way diverse social processes such as globalization, poverty, disease, and conflict, combine with global environmental change to affect human security. GECHS is overseen by a scientific steering committee , enriched by the contributions of associates , and coordinated from an international project office (IPO) located in the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo . The IPO is supported financially by the Norwegian Research Council

The GECHS synthesis conference ”Human Security in an Era of Global Change” took place June 22-24, 2009, at the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway. The conference synthesised the findings of 10 years of research on the relationship between human security and global environmental change, and linked the findings from research to policies and practitioner activities. The conference gathered more than 150 researchers, policy makers and stakeholders from different fields to discuss the interactions between various processes of change and what they mean for human security. The conference also served as a forum for engaging young scholars, and for discussing a future agenda for research and action on environmental change and human security. The conference brought a large number of good quality contributions and interesting discussions.

Global Environmental Change and Human Security
Edited by Richard A. Matthew, Jon Barnett, Bryan McDonald and Karen L. O'Brien Foreword by Geoffrey D. Dabelko In recent years, scholars in international relations and other fields have begun to conceive of security more broadly, moving away from a state-centered concept of national security toward the idea of human security, which emphasizes the individual and human well-being. Viewing global environmental change through the lens of human security connects such problems as melting ice caps and carbon emissions to poverty, vulnerability, equity, and conflict. This book examines the complex social, health, and economic consequences of environmental change across the globe. In chapters that are both academically rigorous and policy relevant, the book discusses the connections of global environmental change to urban poverty, natural disasters (with a case study of Hurricane Katrina), violent conflict (with a study of the decade-long Nepalese civil war), population, gender, and development. The book makes clear the inadequacy of traditional understandings of security and shows how global environmental change is raising new, unavoidable questions of human insecurity, conflict, cooperation, and sustainable development.

THE USE OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING
TO STUDY THE HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN guide on remote sensing. The purpose of this guide is to help you find selected key documents and data sets vital to understanding the use of satellite remote sensing to study the human dimensions of global environmental change. Satellite remote sensing technology and the science associated with evaluation of its data offer potentially valuable information for assisting human dimensions research studies. The human dimensions of global environmental change consist of the driving forces and the resultant actions of mankind capable of affecting the Earth system and its processes. From a fundamental perspective, the relevant types of human actions are those that have accompanied the historical development of civilization and technology, and that now are reaching epic proportions due to the continually expanding human population. In "A Framework for Research on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change," Jacobson and Price (1990) group such actions into five major categories: 1) fossil fuel consumption; 2) biomass fuel consumption; 3) land use change; 4) agricultural activities; and 5) halocarbon production and release. Human actions involving biomass fuel consumption, land-use change, and agricultural activities all involve direct interaction with the global land surface. The extent of these interactions has prompted concern about the possible effects on the global physical, chemical, and biological systems. In particular, large-scale changes in land use at rates unprecedented in human history are provoking considerable concern. Land-use change is frequently accompanied by alterations or changes in land cover, which may possibly contribute to subsequent environmental change.
