Tel. + 46 8 674 7543 While global climate change has received much attention in the last few years, global environmental change includes but goes well beyond climate into areas such as changes in the nature and behavior of ecosystems, changes in the biogeochemical cycling of material through the Earth System, and “tipping points" in the Earth System. We aim to analyze the global scale ramifications of humanity´s rapid movement into the Anthropocene. Linking social-ecological changes
Human activities now match (and often exceed) the natural forces that regulate the Earth System. Recent ice core data show that current levels of carbon dioxide and methane are well outside the range of natural variability over the last 800,000 years. Roughly half of the world´s ice-free land surface has been altered by human actions. Particles emitted by human activities alter the energy balance of the planet, as well as have adverse effects on human health. These may seem to be unrelated issues; however, over the last decades, we have gained a deeper understanding of the degree to which all of these different issues are linked.

Cluster: Global Environmental Change
Students are barraged on a daily basis with news stories of El Nino, global warming, CO2 increasing, greenhouse effects, ozone hole, etc. This cluster will introduce some of the scientific concepts and issues of natural global cycles and how the systems have changed in the past. We will discuss the physical, chemical and biological changes of the earth's environment in the past, present and future. The past will concentrate on the physical, chemical and biological changes that are recorded in the rock, ice and sediment record. The present will concentrate on recent changes on the oceans and atmosphere, and discuss the human dimension. The future will discuss the merits and limits of global models. SUMMARY Now in its second edition. This text has been extensively revised and rewritten to reflect the growth in environmental research during the last decade. Human-induced environmental change is occurring at such a rapid rate that, inevitably, the fundamental processes involved in biogeochemical cycling are being altered.
"Global Environmental Change" considers alterations to the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and other elements as a result of industrial/technological development and agriculture, which have significantly altered the natural environment. The book adopts a temporal and spatial approach to environmental change, beginning with the natural environmental change of the Quaternery period and continuing with the culturally-induced change since the inception of agriculture 10,000 years ago.

    The program
Global environmental change is characterized by complex interactions between processes with different impacts between geographical areas. This complexity calls for professionals with a broad outlook and strong analytical skills, trained to translate data into understanding, and communicate with decision makers. The Master in Global Environmental Change provides solid skills building based on our unique, case-based methodology. One of the strengths of the program is its intensive training in decision analysis and geographical information systems (GIS) applied to global environmental change. Using these tools, students will discover the reality of global environmental change from the raw data and analyze future scenarios. Another strength of the program lies in its emphasis on communication skills, training students and stimulating their creativity to translate scientific evidence into understandable information for diverse audiences and to support environmental decision-making. By the end of the program, students may pursue roles as a policy adviser, risk analyst, or researcher, be it in government, international organizations, NGO, research organization or consulting company, or continue to pursue a PhD.

Towards global human health and wellbeing in a changing environment
The Global Environmental Change and Human Health (GECHH) was launched in 2006 as a Joint Project of the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP) to respond to the growing need to understand better the multi-faceted and complex linkages between global environmental change (including climate change, land and sea use change, global biodiversity loss and change, global socio-economic change) and human health. The GECHH aims at elucidating the spectrum and magnitude of risks to human wellbeing and health, consequent upon human-induced global environmental changes, in order that society at large has a fuller understanding of the actual and likely consequences of the ways in which, collectively, human societies are changing the Earth System. Download the Brochure and the Science Plan See the PowerPoint Presentation The GECHH International Project Office is hosted and supported by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).

Government's Disaster Preparedness Re "Ondoy"
by Ondoy one of the most disaster typhoon that happened in the Philippines. Killed almost thousands of people from the different parts of our country . Cainta, Rizal, Pateros, Taguig, Marikina and other parts that are involved. It happened just a few days with a floods like a monster that could never forget. One of the happenings this year 2009, that cause different kinds of phobias to everyone. Is it an act of man? or an act of God?.
Many changes that already happened, so many things that we could do. Some people cares about it , but others don't. Ondoy.......No one prepared for this, even the government itself. September 28,2009, happened in a shocking way. Others says that it is the scariest typhoon that happened and experience them a different disaster that cause from our nature.Even the Government don't prepare for this. They couldn't even save their people from the time it happened.
In my opinion, it is not an act of God, it is all about people who don't care for our nature. Different kinds of activities of man that could make our world end. From the different kinds of pollutants that pollutes our land, water and air,our environment...

for the National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment.

(Washington, DC, December 7-8, 2000) Virginia H. Dale Phone: 865-576-8043, Email: VHD@ORNL.gov Humans have many effects on the environment that lead to global change. Climate is one mechanism through which human activities affect their environment, and continuing the research on climate and related phenomena is crucial to further understand these interactions. But other mechanisms operate without direct involvement of climate and also are important. Thus, to understand global change, much research is needed in addition to the current efforts on climate-related phenomena. These needs can be grouped into four categories: (a) biogeochemical cycles, (b) habitat changes (land cover and use), (c) Invasive species (biotic mixing), and (d) ecosystem functioning and biological diversity. Because ecosystem functioning and biological diversity are relevant to and are affected by cycles, habitat, and invasions, they are discussed under each of those three major topics, rather than separately. Biogeochemical cyclesespecially cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and waterhave been pervasively affected by humans, resulting in significant global changes. These changes have altered the composition of plant and animal communities and ecosystem functioning, and have caused changes in climate and in the quality of humans' lives. The various cycles interact in complex ways; better understanding of them is needed, including the role of the oceans in the cycles and the responses of ecosystems to changes in them.
