Global Warming
Summary
It doesn't seem possible. The entire Earth is getting warmer because of human activity? Many scientists say it's true. The warming of the Earth is the subject of intense concern of many scientists, policy-makers, and citizens. Participants in the debate are often ignorant of the facts and the scientific principles underlying global warming. This is understandable. Global warming is an incredibly complex subject and many important facts are not widely known. Planetforlife will try to explain the science of global warming with objectivity and detachment.
Information Sources
The bulk of the information presented on this website comes from three sources. In 1988 the United Nations established the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). The IPCC is fundamentally a scientific body although the UN is a political institution. Leading scientists from around the world make up the IPCC. In 2001, the IPCC published a report called Climate Change 2001: The Scientific Basis.

    Global Warming
Subhankar Banerjee/Associated Press Updated: Oct. 6, 2010 World leaders gathered in Copenhagen in December 2009 for a session tha that had been years in the making but that fell short of even the lowered expectations with which it opened. The 192 nations in attendance at the end merely agreed to try to reach a binding accord before at a follow up meeting in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2010. By the summer, Ban-Ki Moon, the United Nations Secretary General, was saying that no sweeping accord was likely, and recommending that a better approach might consist of small steps in separate fields that built toward wider consensus. At the heart of the international debate is a momentous tussle between rich and poor countries over who steps up first and who pays most for changed energy menus. In the United States, Democratic leaders in the Senate in July 2010 gave up on reaching even a scaled-down climate bill, in the face of opposition from Republicans and some energy-state Democrats. The House had passed a broad cap-and-trade bill in 2009.

Dramatic Change In West Antarctic Ice
Could Produce 16ft Rise In Sea Levels by Michael McCarthy, February 2, 2005
British scientists have discovered a new threat to the world which may be a result of global warming. Researchers from the Cambridge-based British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have discovered that a massive Antarctic ice sheet previously assumed to be stable may be starting to disintegrate, a conference on climate change heard yesterday. Its collapse would raise sea levels around the earth by more than 16 feet. BAS staff are carrying out urgent measurements of the remote points in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) where they have found ice to be flowing into the sea at the enormous rate of 250 cubic kilometres a year, a discharge alone that is raising global sea levels by a fifth of a millimetre a year. Professor Chris Rapley, the BAS director, told the conference at the UK Meteorological Office in Exeter, which was attended by scientists from all over the world, that their discovery had reactivated worries about the ice sheet's collapse.

  • Climate model projections summarized by the IPCC indicate that average global surface temperature will continue to rise during the 21st century by 1.1 o C to 6.4 o C. Such global warming will cause sea level to rise, and is expected to increase the intensity of extreme weather events and to change the amount/pattern of precipitation. Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinctions and the increase in diseases. Back to the top

Evidence for global warming - and why we need to take action
Evidence for global warming - and why we need to take action The following statement was prepared by Professor Peter Barrett FRSNZ (Director of the Antarctic Centre, Victoria University of Wellington), and is a slighly amended version of an article originally published in the "Evening Post". We still see letters and articles in our newspapers claiming that global warming has nothing to do with human activity, and that there is no need to do anything about it. This claim is echoed and promoted by business interests, and risks deflecting Government efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas pollution. Do we really need to be concerned about this? I believe we do on two counts: 1. The claim denies a huge body of contrary published scientific evidence amassed over the last 15 years. Thus it trivialises this effort, and by implication all science.
    2. Earth scientists have a better understanding than most of earth history and behaviour, and can appreciate the magnitude of effects that are bound to follow the 3-4 degree C global temperature rise projected for the next 100 years - giving a temperature as warm as the Eocene. How can we be so sure of this? For the last few years I have been following the work of the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It consists of three Working Groups:

  • The Earth was formed about years ago.
  • In the beginning, the Earth's atmosphere contained very little oxygen (less than oxygen pressure).
  • Early plants started to develop more than 2 billion years ago, probably about
  • Through photosynthesis, plants uptake carbon dioxide into the biosphere as organic matter, and release oxygen as a byproduct.
  • Through geologic time, oxygen accumulated gradually in the atmosphere, reaching a value of about of atmospheric gases at the present time.
  • Through geologic time, surplus organic matter has been sequestered in the lithosphere as fossil organic materials (coal, petroleum, and natural gas).
  • Early animals (the first organisms with external shells) started to develop around years ago.
  • Animals operate in the opposite way than plants: they take up oxygen, burn organic matter (food), and release carbon dioxide as a byproduct.
  • Early humans ( Australopithecus anamensis ) began to develop about years ago.
  • Cool climatic conditions have prevailed during the past years. The species

The causes of global warming and climate change!
There are two competing theories for the recent global warming trend. The first is based on a theory which followed the warming trend that occurred between 1975 and 1998. The second theory is based on highly correlated data going back thousands of years. Most agree that the temperature has increased about 0.6 - 0.7 Centigrade over the last century and that the level of CO2 or Carbon Dioxide a greenhouse gas has been increased in the atmosphere by 25-30% from pre industrial values. The first theory, which is the generally accepted one, is that the release of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuel and from land use is responsible for the resent temperature increase. The second theory is that the sun's magnetic field and the solar wind modulate the amount of high energy cosmic radiation that the earth receives. This in turn affects low altitude cloud cover and how much water vapor there is in the atmosphere and thus regulates the climate.
