This page is based on a brief synopsis of the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), as well as NCDC's own data resources. It was prepared by David Easterling and Tom Karl, National Climatic Data Center, Asheville, N.C. 28801.
Introduction
One of the most vigorously debated topics on Earth is the issue of climate change, and the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) data centers are central to answering some of the most pressing global change questions that remain unresolved. The National Climatic Data Center contains the instrumental and paleoclimatic records that can precisely define the nature of climatic fluctuations at time scales of a century and longer. Among the diverse kinds of data platforms whose data contribute to NCDC's resources are: Ships, buoys, weather stations , weather balloons, satellites, radar and many climate proxy records such as tree rings and ice cores. Basic Information
Climate Change or Global Warming? The term climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming, but according to the National Academy of Sciences, "the phrase 'climate change' is growing in preferred use to 'global warming' because it helps convey that there are [other] changes in addition to rising temperatures." Climate change refers to any significant change in measures of climate (such as temperature, precipitation, or wind) lasting for an extended period (decades or longer). Climate change may result from:
  • natural factors, such as changes in the sun's intensity or slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun; natural processes within the climate system (e.g. changes in ocean circulation); human activities that change the atmosphere's composition (e.g. through burning fossil fuels) and the land surface (e.g. deforestation, reforestation, urbanization, desertification, etc.)
Global warming is an average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface and in the troposphere , which can contribute to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and human induced. In common usage, "global warming" often refers to the warming that can occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities.

Human Global Warming
Human Global Warming Does Not Exist. It only exists in the eyes of the media, politicians and the ill-informed masses of western society. Human Global Warming has reached heights of hysteria in the UK since the turn of the century. Human Global Warming has become a social 21st century epidemic with no scientific basis. The constant barrage of news reports particularly Sky News about impending doom has become just laughable. If there is any person that still believes in Human Global Warming it is because they have been massively mislead. Practically all Earth Scientists, especially Climatologists now understand that there is no such thing as Human Global Warming.
Humans release 6 gigatonnes of CO2 per annum into the atmosphere. The Natural Earth without any humans releases 180 gigatonnes of CO2 per annum into the atmosphere.
It is reasonable to assume as a species, our impact on the CO2 content of the atmosphere is minimal. We only contribute a little over 3% of the total CO2 emissions. The vast majority of CO2 emissions are coming from the sea, volcanism and rotting vegetation.
CO2 represents about 330-380 parts per million of the atmosphere. The natural carbon cycle explains why CO2 is currently rising. The carbon cycle lags hundreds of years behind global temperatures. CO2 is currently rising because of the so called Medieval Optimum around 1200 and is likely to keep rising for the foreseeable future despite anything that the human race does to fight it.

Global Warming Global warming: Green house effect o F (15 o C). During the last century this average has risen by about 1 o F. By the year 2100, it is believed that the rise would be between 2.5 and 10.4 o F. This will cause dramatic changes such as rise in sea level, changes in rainfall patterns, wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife and humans. Green house gases and Green house effect:- Normally all life on earth depends on this green house effect. If it does not exist, earth would be cooled, and ice would cover earth from pole to pole. But if the green house effect becomes strong it could make the earth warmer than usual. Even al little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants and animals. Types of Greenhouse Gases:- In the environment, greenhouse gases occur (i) naturally or (ii) from human activities. The most abundant greenhouse gas is Carbon dioxide. It reaches the atmosphere due to volcanic eruptions, respiration of animals, burning and decay of organic matter such as plants by photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is also absorbed into ocean water. But humans by their activities increase the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Such activities include burning of fossil fuels, solid wasted, wood and wood products to drive vehicles, generate electricity etc. At the same time, due to deforestation, the number of trees available to absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis has been greatly reduced.

Energy Independence
Solved!
Solutions for Energy Independence and Global Warming
The electrical energy equivalent to a gallon of gas can be generated for about $0.84 Electric motors are about 3.75 times as efficient as internal combustion engines so only 1/3.75*0.84 = $0.23 worth of electricity will equal a gallon of gas! "A desert area 10 by 15 miles could provide 20,000 MW of power, while the electricity needs of the entire U. S. could theoretically be met by an area 100 miles on a side." - Sandia Labs Website (www.energylan.sandia.gov/ sunlab/research.htm) Creating many different souces of energy such as alternative fuels will make for a unworkable system for our nation. We might as well settle on electricity. Energy independence has been a goal for the United States since about 1976. All of the Presidents since have reasserted this goal. However we come to fall further and further behind. This is not surprising since oil prices have remained below the cost of alternatives. Because Gasoline is an inexpensive and concentrated energy source it is difficult to replace. If oil (and thus gasoline) prices were to move drastically higher from where they are now, there is no doubt that many solutions would come into play. The problem with waiting for this to happen, is that if energy prices spike up suddenly, there will be a lag time until suitable alternatives can be developed. This lag time would almost certainly lead to a great deal of economic hardship for citizens of the United States.
