The Waihi landscape was very different 7 million years ago. The land was higher, probably by several hundred metres. Geysers threw boiling, mineral rich water high into the air, mudpools bubbled and hot springs dotted the countryside, very much like Rotorua today. Hot rock far below the ground provided heat energy for those spectacular features and also provided the ingredients for the gold deposit to be formed at Martha Hill. Over time the volcanic activity dwindled as the volcanic 'hot spot' gradually migrated southeast, passing through Tauranga and Te Puke to be centred around Rotorua today. This volcanic activity provided the conditions and environment for the gold and silver now being mined at Martha.

Crofoot/Lewis gold deposit, Nevada (2.5 Moz gold, 1987 to present). As a research geologist for Homestake Mining Company in 1981, recognized gold potential, sited the discovery hole and ran a program (112 drill holes) that defined a preliminary gold resource. Put into production by Hycroft Resources in 1987 at a rate of 100,000 ounces per year and later sold to Vista Gold. Production through 2004 is 1.05 Moz.  Cerro Chorcha, Panama (currently in resource evaluation): As consulting geologist with Recursos del Caribe, discovered the Cerro Chorcha porphyry copper deposit in 1991 for Noranda by following up on anomalous stream sediment samples collected by Asarco in the 1960’s. NI 43-101 compliant resources as of 2007 stood at 138,500,000 tonnes of 0.5% copper.  San Andres gold deposit, Honduras (1.4 M ounces gold, 1983 to present): As consulting geologist with Recursos del Caribe in 1993, recognized, sampled and documented bulk mineable gold mineralization (on behalf of Noranda). Credited by Ed Campbell, then owner of San Andres, with the discovery of what is, today, a 1.4 Moz ore deposit operated by Aura Minerals.

    Latrobe nugget
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Latrobe gold nugget, on display in The Vault, Natural History Museum, London. The Latrobe nugget is one of the largest clusters of cubic gold crystals known in the world and is kept at the Natural History Museum in London . The nugget weighs 717 grams. It was found at Mount McIvor, Victoria, Australia . It was raised on 1 May 1853 in the presence of Charles La Trobe Governor of Victoria , and was named in his honour. Naturally all gold has a crystalline structure, yet nuggets showing this structure are very uncommon. They require specific conditions to form, in particular space in which to grow. Crystals of gold are found in cavities in softer minerals such as iron oxides , where they have pushed aside the enclosing material as they grew. Gold crystallises in the cubic system, and perhaps the most common variety is the eight-sided octahedron , of which the Latrobe Nugget is a good example.

California Gold Districts: Chuckwalla, Azusa-Tujunga, and Dulzura
(Terrain in the Tujunga Canyon area.)
It may come as no surprise to you that many of California's best-known and most extensive gold districts lie within the boundaries of the Motherlode Region. However, the Golden State has quite a few smaller, less-famous gold districts as well.
In this post I will cover three of those lesser-known districts, Chuckwalla; Azusa-Tujunga; and Dulzura.
    Chuckwalla District
The Chuckwalla District is just south of the community of Desert Center in southeastern Riverside County. In earlier times the Chuckwalla District was called the Pacific Mining District but at some point the decision was made to name this district after the mountains that produced the lode and placer gold that brought miners to the region in the 1880s.
Most of the gold mining in the Chuckwallas was of the hard-rock or lode variety but a few localized dry placers were worked as well. Most of these can be found in alluvial fans or small washes or gullies that form the drainage for some of the better-known Chuckwalla District mines like the Red Cloud, Sterling, Lost Pony, Coffee, and Great Western.
    MagazineDiscountCenter

The gold geology of the Chuckwallas is primarily formed in gold quartz veins that are often heavily pyritic (i.e., containing iron pyrites) and that transect the local country rock which is granite and gneiss. Historical accounts state that some rich pockets of both elluvial and alluvial gold were recovered in the early days of the District and the gold from these was described as "very coarse and orangish or reddish yellow" in color due to the gold's natural alloy with copper. Some silver was also recovered in the Chuckwalla region.
