Greenhouse Gases
Articles on greenhouse gases. The numerous public forums that discuss environmental issues and the ever-increasing political debates about the damage humans are doing to the planet always include some mention of greenhouse gases. Scientists and scholars toss the term about like everyone knows exactly what it means, but most people probably don't really understand what greenhouse gases are and how they can be harmful.
Greenhouse gases (GHG) are gaseous components in the atmosphere that contribute to the "greenhouse effect", the heating of the Earth by means of a similar effect produced by the glass panes of a greenhouse. Greenhouse gases allow light from the sun to enter the atmosphere surrounding the Earth. When that sunlight strikes the planet, some of it is reflected back toward space as infrared radiation, or heat. The GHGs in the atmosphere trap the heat, but over time the amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth's surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the planet's surface pretty constant. However, it is a documented scientific fact that global temperatures have been steadily rising for decades.
Some GHGs, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide, occur naturally to some extent in the atmosphere. Human activities add to the levels of these naturally occurring gases, and many of those activities are benign and don't have significant effects on the environment. But the political debate over GHGs focuses on certain human activities that increase the concentrations of GHGs in ways that threaten the environment, and research has stepped up dramatically in recent years to determine whether or not humans should be trying to limit those activities.

45. The Greenhouse Effect
Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up.
http://epa.gov/climatechange/kids/greenhouse.html
The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide nitrous oxide , and methane colder. Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Most greenhouses look like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun. The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter.
biosphere
(D) The greenhouse effect is important. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals.
See an animation of how enhancing the greenhouse effect likely contributes to global warming.

    Abstract
Our selection of new super greenhouse gases to fill a putative “window” in a future Martian atmosphere relies on quantum-mechanical calculations. Our study indicates that if Mars could somehow acquire an Earth-like atmospheric composition and surface pressure, then an Earth-like temperature could be sustained by a mixture of five to seven fluorine compounds. Martian mining requirements for replenishing the fluorine could be comparable to current terrestrial extraction. Greenhouse gases may be of some use in making Mars habitable, or at least in sustaining its habitability if otherwise achieved. Previously suggested gases include the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs; refs.

After 150 Years of Industrialization, Climate Change is Inevitable By Larry West , About.com Guide
    See More About:
zSB(3,3) The "greenhouse effect" often gets a bad rap because of its association with global warming, but the truth is we couldn't live without it. What Causes the Greenhouse Effect?
Life on earth depends on energy from the sun. About 30 percent of the sunlight that beams toward Earth is deflected by the outer atmosphere and scattered back into space. The rest reaches the planet's surface and is reflected upward again as a type of slow-moving energy called infrared radiation. The heat caused by infrared radiation is absorbed by "greenhouse gases" such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone and methane, which slows its escape from the atmosphere. Although greenhouse gases make up only about 1 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, they regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that surrounds the planet.

Focus Disasters affecting mountainous, coastal regions, such as western Canada. Approach Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where we use massively-parallel computers to solve the equations describing the atmosphere. These solutions will be made for a sequence of telescoping regions that zoom in from the large (100-1000 km) "synoptic" scales of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), through the medium (10-100 km)"mesoscales" of storm prediction and mountain topography, to the fine (0.1-10 km) "microscales" of turbulence. Facts Climate Change Global Warming Greenhouse gases are the gases in our atmosphere that determine to a variant degree, how much heat we retain in our atmosphere. Greenhouse Gases - CO2, H20, CH4, N2O Simply put, without greenhouse gases the earth would be a frozen planet. Incapable of sustaining life as we know it. There would be no plants, no trees, no animals, just frozen ice and stone. We need greenhouse gases to capture and hold heat from the sun. Not enough greenhouse gases and we are in an ice age. Too much greenhouse gases and we are in the age of the dinosaurs, or worse... to warm to sustain life as we now know it. The dominant natural greenhouse gases are H20 (water), CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane), and Nitrous oxide (N2O). Chiefly, these gases and the ones that keep us warm enough to live relatively comfortably here on earth. The natural forces imposed on our climate system; such as the external forcing of the sun and the Milankovitch cycles, and the internal (terrestrial) climate forcings generally regulate the amount of warmth we enjoy.

    ABSTRACT
Numerous marine areas in SouthEast Asia are cold and deep enough to develop stable gas hydrates of greenhouse gases methane and carbon dioxide and of reducing agents such as hydrogen sulfide. In addition many of these deeps have low oxygen values below sill depths. Warming of such waters could: destabilize existing gas hydrates (clathrates) flashing them into gas and
reduce the oxygen capacity of waters below the sill depth

In the ocean, gases also may be stored as ice-like solids given the proper temperature and pressure conditions (Macleod, 1982). These materials called clathrates or gas hydrates (Brown, 1962). They are analogs of "ices" discovered as early as 1810 Davy (1811). The marine clathrates are complex mixtures of the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane) or toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide with water in an ice-like crystal structure. They are stable at tempertures above the freezing point of water and sea water but at relatively high pressures (
