Rather than beginning by researching and developing a hypothesis, the first step is data collection, through a variety of methods. From the data collected, the key points are marked with a series of codes , which are extracted from the text. The codes are grouped into similar concepts in order to make them more workable. From these concepts, categories are formed, which are the basis for the creation of a theory , or a reverse engineered hypothesis . This contradicts the traditional model of research, where the researcher chooses a

More about: Consultancy Social Research Recent Projects Publications ... Home Grounded Theory Grounded theory was developed in the 1960s. It was a reaction to the dominance of quantitative research methods in which a theory is formed then an empirical study is carried out to discover whether the hypothesis is proven. Grounded theory is the opposite: a theory is systematically verified by the collection and analysis of data. Any research has three major components: collecting data, interpreting data and producing research reports. In traditional research the theory is developed as a separate component before these three are tackled, and is not reviewed until the data has been collected and interpreted. In grounded theory research the theory is grounded in the data, which is to say that it is reviewed and revised as necessary at any point in the process. There are seven main features of grounded theory research.

Grounded theory Grounded theory is a qualitative research approach suitable for investigating and understanding real-life situations. Originally developed in the 1960s by the sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss, grounded theory is now widely used by researchers, particularly in the health sciences. Grounded theory provides researchers with well-established procedures for dealing with large quantities of unstructured data. The goal of grounded theory is to develop theory from practice. Classroom-based researchers are increasingly recognizing the potential of qualitative research approaches such as grounded theory to understand the complex social and pedagogic processes that routinely occur in language classrooms. For an introduction to grounded theory development procedures see Chapter One of Rose Senior's book The Experience of Language Teaching. For a detailed description of the individual steps involved in the development of a grounded theory see Chapter Two of Rose's doctoral dissertation 'The good language class: Teacher perceptions' Thesis available online at the Australasian Digital Theses Program website: http://adt.ecu.edu.au/adt-public/adt-ECU2006.0002.html

Description
Grounded Theory is a qualitative research technique where instead of starting with a theory, the researcher beings with the data and uses the data to generate a theory. Starting with a theory before analyzing the data is not allowed. The theory is not created from analyzing research literature, but from systematically analyzing the data through both inductive and deductive reasoning. edit
Data analysis techniques:
Open coding - Data is divided into categories and analyzed for common themes.
Axial coding - Connections are made between categories.
Selective coding - Categories and connections between them form a story line to describe phenomenon.
Development of a theory - A theory, based entirely on collected data, is created to explain the phenomenon edit
History
This method was formalized in the 1960's by Anselm Strauss and Barney Glaser through their work in the study of the socialization of illness at the University of California, San Francisco. edit
Principal Use
While initially used in sociology, it is has been used sucessfully in anthropology, education, nursing, psycholorgy and social work. Some examples of studies using grounded theory are the ways in which scientists work, management of a difficult pregnancy, experiences with chronic illness and spousal abuse.

Introduction
Grounded Theory is a systematic approach to discover theory from social data(1). Glaser and Strauss developed the methodology while researching the experiences of chronically ill patients. Grounded Theory, as originally conceived, involves a continuous process for handling and interpreting qualitative data. The early emphasis on qualitative data, shifting from the previous reliance on quantitative data for sociological research methods(2), represents a paradigm shift ; however, both Glaser and Strauss later recognize the importance of also including quantitative data.
Why Use It?
According to Grounded Theory methodology, comparative analysis is used to generate a theory or theories and is in itself a research process. Grounded Theory is therefore viewed as an inductive method using an iterative process of constant comparison of data to generate theory. Glaser and Strauss outline the analytical procedure of constant comparison using the explicit coding of qualitative data jointly with analyzing data for new categories and hypotheses in order to generate theoretical ideas. The constant comparative method involves four stages:
  • comparing incidents applicable to each category integrating categories and their properties delimiting the theory writing the theory
  • Classical Grounded Theory
Based on this original methodology, which Glaser later calls Classical Grounded Theory following a split between the two originators of the approach, the process begins by coding the data into as many categories as possible. Ideas and categories are refined as more instances of the same category code are found. Once the exhaustive categories are identified, the analysis focuses on understanding the emergent properties of the categories. Throughout this process categories are generally reduced or delimited and higher levels of concepts emerge. The combination of analysis, comparison, and integration of categories results in a new understanding of the topic of interest. Finally, a reasonably accurate theory emerges and can be written with confidence. Storberg-Walker emphasized that conceptual development was the most substantive and important component of the grounded theory-building research.(3)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Discovery of Grounded Theory is a book ( ISBN 0-202-30260-1 ) by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss on grounded theory After their success with Awareness of Dying , Glaser and Strauss decided to write a book on methodology. The Discovery of Grounded Theory was meant to invite and motivate people to use the newly developed methodology. Unlike later works, it does not provide much advice on how to put the theory into practice. The authors had several goals in mind when writing the book:
    • Legitimize qualitative research . Having a reference book by established authors helped students defend qualitative studies which were not widely accepted at the time. Criticize functionalists like Talcott Parsons and his student Robert K. Merton who in turn had been a teacher of Barney Glaser. Demonstrate the possibility of building theories from data, something that many qualitative researchers doubt to this day, instead choosing to stick with mere ethnographic descriptions.

    GROUNDED THEORY
Sociologyindex Sociology Books 2009 Grounded Theory Inductive Reasoning Grounded Theory has been derived through inductive reasoning , thus giving it a firm grounding in data or observations of the world. Grounded Theory was an attempt to avoid sociological theory which was overly abstract and for which the references to the real world were unclear. Such abstract theory would be simply a logical construction deduced from assumptions and propositions. The basic idea of the grounded theory approach is to read (and re-read) a textual database (such as a corpus of field notes) and "discover" or label variables (called categories, concepts and properties) and their interrelationships. Discussion drawn from:
Glaser and Strauss. 1967. The Discovery of Grounded Theory.
Strauss and Corbin. 1990. Basics of Qualitative Research.
    Goals and Perspective
The phrase "grounded theory" refers to theory that is developed inductively from a corpus of data. If done well, this means that the resulting theory at least fits one dataset perfectly. This contrasts with theory derived deductively from grand theory, without the help of data, and which could therefore turn out to fit no data at all.
Grounded theory takes a case rather than variable perspective, although the distinction is nearly impossible to draw. This means in part that the researcher takes different cases to be wholes, in which the variables interact as a unit to produce certain outcomes. A case-oriented perspective tends to assume that variables interact in complex ways, and is suspicious of simple additive models, such as ANOVA with main effects only.

A case-oriented perspective tends to assume that variables interact in complex ways, and is suspicious of simple additive models, such as ANOVA with main effects only. Part and parcel of the case-orientation is a comparative orientation. Cases similar on many variables but with different outcomes are compared to see where the key causal differences may lie. This is based on John Stuart Mills' (1843, A system of logic: Ratiocinative and Inductive) method of differences essentially the use of (natural) experimental design. Similarly, cases that have the same outcome are examined to see which conditions they all have in common, thereby revealing necessary causes.

It also explains clearly that grounded theory, Glaser style, is an emergent methodology. It provides some arguments to support that approach. Glaser (1998) is also relevant for beginners in grounded theory and is intended as a textbook for beginners.
    • index Overview Grounded theory begins with a research situation. Within that situation, your task as researcher is to understand what is happening there, and how the players manage their roles. You will mostly do this through observation, conversation and interview. After each bout of data collection you note down the key issues: this I have labelled "note-taking Constant comparison is the heart of the process. At first you compare interview (or other data) to interview (or other data). Theory emerges quickly. When it has begun to emerge you compare data to theory.

G ROUNDED T HEORY During the last 30 years sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss have formulated and developed in great detail their grounded theory perspective on social science research. S CIENTIFIC M ETHOD I shall call this general account of scientific method "abductive explanatory inferentialism" (AEI). While this is an extended label, it does serve the useful purpose of suggesting that the theory of scientific method is centrally concerned with generating theories abductively and appraising them in terms of what philosophers have come to call inference to the best explanation. I shall explain these two related ideas later. P ROBLEM F ORMULATION According to the AEI theory of scientific method, the selection and formulation of problems are of central importance to scientific research. In fact, by adopting a particular account of scientific problems, AEI method is able to explain how inquiry is possible, and at the same time provide guidance for the conduct of research. The account of problems that boasts these twin virtues is the constraint-composition theory. As mentioned earlier, Glaser and Strauss clearly recognize the importance of understanding method in the context of problem-solving. However, although they offer some thoughtful remarks about research problems, they do not give the matter systematic attention.
