Grounded Theory is most accurately described as a research method in which the theory is developed from the data, rather than the other way around. That makes this is an inductive approach, meaning that it moves from the specific to the more general. The method of study is essentially based on three elements: concepts, categories and propositions, or what was originally called “hypotheses”. However, concepts are the key elements of analysis since the theory is developed from the conceptualization of data, rather than the actual data. Grounded theory is often perceived as a method which separates theory and data but others insist that the method actually combines the two. Data collection, analysis and theory formulation are undeniably connected in a reciprocal sense, and the grounded theory approach incorporates explicit procedures to guide this. This is especially evident in that according to grounded theory, the processes of asking questions and making comparisons are specifically detailed to inform and guide analysis and to facilitate theorizing process. For example, it is specifically stated that the research questions must be open and general rather than formed as specific hypotheses, and that the emergent theory should account for a phenomenon that is relevant to participants.

How could you find out what attributes or elements make people like some commercials and not others? Suppose you had a classroom full of toys, and a notebook full of data on how often boys and girls played with each one. How would you find out what made boys like some, and girls like others? Suppose you had several hundred observations of parents shopping with their kids - and estimates of how old the children were. What could you find out about how shopping changes as children get older? Suppose you had the verbatim responses of consumers to an open-ended question that asked them what happened in a commercial they had just seen. How could you develop codes for content coding that would differentiate the consumers most interested in buying the product. For tackling problems like these, I have found grounded theory method to be quite useful. In 1967, two academic sociologists, Barney Glaser & Anselm Strauss (1967) at UC-San Francisco put forth a systematic approach to generating new conceptualizations of what is going on in newly emerging areas of study. Their seminal work, "The Development of Grounded Theory," moved researchers past the hypothesis-testing uses of raw data into the hypothesis-generating potential of their observations. The approach has been steadily expanding its reach within academia - through sociology and social anthropology and, more recently into applied disciplines like educational research.

The Creation of Theory:
A Recent Application of the Grounded Theory Method

The Qualitative Report , Volume 2, Number 4, December, 1996
(http://www.nova.edu/ssss/QR/QR2-4/pandit.html)
Abstract
This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project ( Pandit , 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.
Introduction
The principal objective of this paper is to reveal how the style of qualitative research known as the 'grounded theory approach' was applied in a research project ( Pandit , 1995) which attempted to generate a theoretical framework of corporate turnaround. Two lesser auxiliary objectives are firstly, to assess the utility of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data for this type of research; and secondly, to assess the extent to which computer-based qualitative data analysis (QDA) software can aid this type of research. In the next section the elements of grounded theory are recalled. This is followed by a detailed account of the procedures and rationale of grounded theory building as employed in the project. Next, the generated theory of corporate turnaround is overviewed and finally, a reflexive account of the research experience is given.

Double click any English word, to find Turkish meaning Grounded Theory (GT) is a research method most often associated with the social sciences, for example as psychology. Developed by the sociologists Barney Glaser (b. 1930) and Anselm Strauss (1916-1996). Their collaboration in research on dying hospital patients led them to write the book Awareness of Dying. In this research they developed the constant comparative method later known as Grounded Theory; see The Discovery of Grounded Theory
Since their original publication in 1967, Glaser and Strauss disagreed on 'how to do' GT. This split occurred most obviously after Strauss published Qualitative Analysis for Social Scientists (1987). Thereafter Strauss in 1990 published Basics of Qualitative Research: Grounded Theory Procedures and Techniques together with Juliet Corbin. This was followed by a rebuke by Glaser (1992) who set out, chapter by chapter, to highlight the differences in what he argued was original grounded theory and why, according to Glaser, what Strauss had written was not grounded theory in its intended form. This divergence in the GT methodology is a subject of much academic debate, which Glaser (1998) calls a "rhetorical wrestle".
According to Kelle (2005), "the controversy between Glaser and Strauss boils down to the question whether the researcher uses a well defined "coding paradigm" and always looks systematically for "causal conditions," "phenomena/context, intervening conditions, action strategies" and "consequences" in the data, or whether theoretical codes are employed as they emerge in the same way as substantive codes emerge, but drawing on a huge fund of "coding families."

    Goals and Perspective
The phrase "grounded theory" refers to theory that is developed inductively from a corpus of data. If done well, this means that the resulting theory at least fits one dataset perfectly. This contrasts with theory derived deductively from grand theory, without the help of data, and which could therefore turn out to fit no data at all. Grounded theory takes a case rather than variable perspective, although the distinction is nearly impossible to draw. This means in part that the researcher takes different cases to be wholes, in which the variables interact as a unit to produce certain outcomes. A case-oriented perspective tends to assume that variables interact in complex ways, and is suspicious of simple additive models, such as ANOVA with main effects only. Part and parcel of the case-orientation is a comparative orientation. Cases similar on many variables but with different outcomes are compared to see where the key causal differences may lie. This is based on John Stuart Mills' (1843, A system of logic: Ratiocinative and Inductive) method of differences essentially the use of (natural) experimental design. Similarly, cases that have the same outcome are examined to see which conditions they all have in common, thereby revealing necessary causes.

    What is Grounded Theory?
All research is "grounded" in data, but few studies produce a "grounded theory." Grounded Theory is an inductive methodology. Although many call Grounded Theory a qualitative method, it is not. It is a general method. It is the systematic generation of theory from systematic research. It is a set of rigorous research procedures leading to the emergence of conceptual categories. These concepts/categories are related to each other as a theoretical explanation of the action(s) that continually resolves the main concern of the participants in a substantive area. Grounded Theory can be used with either qualitative or quantitative data. Here is an exerpt from one of our GTI Fellows, Olavur Christiansen , explaining the main differences between "classic" or "glaserian" GT, and other methods which call themselves GT. I have tried to explain this difference by referring to the three "hallmarks" of Glaserian GT. These "hallmarks" are unique for "glaserian GT" and sums up how Glaserian GT is different from the other versions of GT:
